Vader chestbox strapping

I'm in the process of switching my Vader chest box from ESB to ANH and whilst I'm at it, I removed the current strapping system as had a few nicks and cuts in it and finally snapped a few days ago.

So, my question is, what do I now use for the strapping on this chestbox? I found some patent leather straps for sale at £8 per yard - but wouldn't this be a tad too shiny?

Way too shiny.

Ideally, you'd want some split grain straps, ~ 1 1/4" wide which you can then weather later with brown shoe polish. Bonded leather straps will work as well.
