USS Bozeman

The piece looks awesome! I'm talking I was so impressed with it. But the width is close to 1/8" to wide. I'll probably make one from scratch and recast it for future work...cause it's a favorite of alot of peeps. I'm consigned to do one in January.

Looks like Tracy at Federation models has the resin copies of the bottom torret.

Chrisisall, there's one more thing when lighting this kit. The nacelles light up on both sides, not just one light the reliant.

Thanks for the tip, but my client isn't having it lit.
The Bozeman has been in the center of my table all this time, staring at me...:eek
 
Let me ask...being a relative newbie to "pro" model building, what are the pros and cons to having a model lit? I would think cost is a factor. Heat buildup? Weakening the structure of the model? Replacing bulbs? How do you fellas decide whether to light a model or not?

I did not ask Chrisisall to light the Bozeman partly because I really didn't know what that would ultimately mean for the model, plus, the Bozeman just sort of has that feel of being dark and menacing, so I thought unlit would still be a good look for it.

Agreed. Nice, but not the direction I'd go either.

Like I said, there's something very menacing and almost un-Starfleet-like about the Soyuz class. Up until the Defiant made its debut, there wasn't any real sort of canon gunship (at least that I'm aware of) in Starfleet. The Soyuz class wasn't about exploration, research, diplomacy, or even missions of mercy; it was about one thing only...constant vigilance and ultimately slugging it out with the "bad guy."

So even though it was Starfleet-issue, I have a mild disconnect with seeing it in the typical "we come in peace and friendship" shining white. I could easily see its designers toning down its color and hiding its brighter lights from view in order to make it more easily able to lie in wait of its prey...

Yeah, and we just watched the episode last week; it was definitely darker than Reliant. Not white at all, and in the final shot with sun on it, it still looked mighty grey. And even a little, shall I say, unwashed. :lol
 
I did this build based on studio model referances from the Miranda studio miniatures and its variants, the Constellation studio models, as well as the Grissom based on sub-components within the Bozeman's design.

On a personal note, ALL my builds are based on the studio model, not as seen on-screen. That's what photography does with lighting. The actual studio mini was based with white, because they used the Miranda/Reliant miniature - which is white. The pic posted above by 'Sniper is good proof of that.

FYI, This was NOT a gunship. The only weapons are the turret canon - variation from the Stargazer/Constellation turrent, and the 6 phaser stations on the primary hull. The pods are extended long range sensor pods for long-range boarder patrols. This comes straight from Greg Jein.

However, whe you build yours, as the modeler, you can do whatever you want. ;-)

I have heard two versions, both of which seem to have some merit based on the show insiders used for that information; the version where the Bozeman greebles are sensor pods seems to be attributed to the modelers, and the version where they are phaser arrays seems to be attributed to the writers. I remember reading somewhere that the reason it has no apparent torpedo bays is due to the massive number of phasers at its disposal.

Does it ultimately matter? Nah. Like you say, they're whatever you want them to be. It reminds me of Gene getting his first glance of the Reliant and loving the look, despite not knowing he was holding it upside down: what the modeler sees and how the writers ultimately use it are frequently two different things. :)

Look at all that stuff. Starships, vipers, phasers, x-wings and a gunstar! That's what I always pictured Santa's workshop looking like :)
