my blog for my wrex build. i may just start posting here. blogger-image--2134515002.jpg

the clay original. long way to go but i'm getting there. because i did something dumb with the mold the clay original is gone. live and learn. the body is mostly done, armor wise other than surfacing, clean up details etc. we hope to have our builds done by dragoncon 2014

IMG_20140511_114454.jpghis head is huge.it's maybe too big...yikes. when my friends saw it (who are going with me as tali and shepard) they were like gyahhh.

IMG_20140511_114328.jpgwith all the parts on the proportions make sense. he's a lil' oversized but i think it will work. i'm 6 ft tall and with head, hump, and feet i'm 7 ft.

i know it's kinda dumb to post to my blog then just have the link here. i'll try to do both later. i've been go go go on this one to meet our dragoncon deadline

ALSO if you've never heard of bounce rubberizer by hotwirefoam factory go buy some on amazon. mix that with cornstarch until you get a thick paste and trowel that onto your eva. smooth with water and brush or sponge. you get a hard flexible coating that is sandable. mix well spread evenly. it does shrink but doesn't crack. what looks like an 1/8th thick layer will shrink down to like a 1/16". for more rubbery effects spray or brush on straight. dilute as little with water as possible

IMG_20140810_212855.jpg my raider shotgun in progress. it's made of foam mostly. not the sturdiest thing but i just need it to survive dragoncon

sorry my ipad takes such "meh" pics. the paint job is more varied and less flat in person. the accordian "space" knee is missing here but you get the idea

the stance seems too wide because the wrex legs don't really easily go on the mannequin .

wrexed.jpg they see me krogaaan, they haaatin'( sorry). no arms on- they exist just not wearing them

wrex5.jpgwrex1.jpgwrex4.jpgwrex2.jpgwrex3.jpgwrex6.jpg FINISHED! WREX AT DRAGONCON 2014. TONS OF LITTLE ISSUES. i had a great pit crew who could tear me down and reassemble with pretty awesome efficiency. needs lots of fixes though. word to the wise: deal with heat issues asap in your build.
also if Mark Meer is shouting at you trying to push through a crowd to get to you for a picture, please: make sure you A- wear glasses to identify actor and B- don't tell said actor " my suit broke i'll be back"
i'm a moron..

i tried to edit out faces of friends in the other pics to be just wrex but this is my favorite shot of us. we make a pretty awesome away party if i say so myself

This is amazing work :D

I'm going to start on Wrex at some point soon too, I love how you've drawn up a full scale plan of the costume. Are you building from a pattern or from scratch?

thanks! i drew wrex as a vector drawing based on some great reference material on deviant art. a high school teacher friend of mine printed it out life sized. i've been building directly from this. i make poster board/card board patterns as i go. i have my ipad handy at all times- several good reference images there. everything is in line with the drawing.the head i did sculpt a little too big.. i would have done things very differently now. this is my first eva build. some growing pains indeed

Gotta start somewhere, this is awesome for your first EVA build :D

I agree that maybe you're head is maybe a tiny little big but when you've put the whole lot together I don't think it'll look too large. When I made Grunt I had the opposite problem that mould shrink made the cast of my sculpt come out a little small but it still looked ok ^^

Is the head cast out of latex? :)

latex from the forehead shell line down. the top is a white semirigid resin backed with urethane foam. really light for it's size. i also cast a "skull" out of softer foam to fill out the face so it isn't so floppy. most of the $$$ was tied up in the head fabrication. it was a big urethane rubber mold. my blog link up top has a video of me pulling it out of the mold. i think the video is still up

Sorry for the bump ...

Curious about progress, and wondering if the mouth and/or eyes will have any form of articulation?

Also, while extremely well done, the angle of the jaw in comparison to the forehead plate seems wrong ... possibly a lot of work to do, but the solution could be to squash the tip of the jaw closer to the plate by as little as one or two centimetres. Just an observation ...

some how the mold got deformed in the forehead region .it's only really noticeable from a certain angle. i sculpted the head in serious rush so i'm not surprised if there are some inconsistencies. i also have a foam "skull" that is going in. his lower jaw hangs a lil' too much at this point. no articulation this go round. i 've made eyes before that have a weight that caused simple movement. it can be a little comical so i may not with this guy. thanks for the input!

Wow! What an incredible costume, I just read through your whole blog post on it- really awesome!! And I am definitely looking into that rubberizer stuff now :)
