UK bans the import of *anything remotely harmful*...

Re: UK bans the import of replica props... 1st October 2007

I don't know how I missed this thread, you guys in the UK have it bad.

What's to keep your government from coming into your house and taking your replicas?

What if a neighbor sees you in your house with a prop gun and they call the authorities?

A ban like this can cause other problems for collectors besides buying a replica gun.

What if someone just wanted to mess with you and called the authorities that they saw you walking around with a gun? Now you were just in your house minding your own business but the cops kick in your door and confiscate your weapons even though they are replicas?

What about a drill that looks like a gun? Hot glue gun? Anything that could be misconstrued as a gun that gets the authorities attention?

I would be terrified as a collector in the UK.

Here in the states we have the right to bear arms and while there are around 20,000 individual gun laws, I feel much safer knowing we have that right.

Re: UK bans the import of replica props... 1st October 2007

There is no current law against owning a replica so those already owned at the moment are safe it is just illegal now to import/export/sell/buy/manufacture a replica thats all (the thats all was sarcasm).
On another note i have noticed a couple of sites selling those clear plastic bb gun replicas in the UK still with no notices about them being banned, but all the other bb guns that were made to look like the real thing i.e black or gunmetal or whatever the finish on the original is dont seem to be listed so i was wondering are the clear ones still legal ?
And if so how close are these clear ones to the real deal usually like size wise and detail ? they seem to be cheap i'm hoping they are cheap because the guts are pretty useless rather than the casings being way off ? i'm really not familiar with them but if that's all that's available are they worth a look ?

This kind of thing.

Re: UK bans the import of replica props... 1st October 2007

The ban seems to imply that if the 'gun' is a bright colour(they actually list the colours in the act) and a different size to a 'real' weapon. Then it's OK.

If you look in a toy store now you'll find it hard to see a black cap gun, but brightly coloured guns apparently exactly the same size are available.

Seems the toy makers are adopting colour rather than size as the way to go.

A clear bb gun couldn't ever be mistaken for a real gun, so maybe that's another alternative, although it's difficult to tell from the pix, they look reasonably accurate on the link you provided. :)

I really wish we could get somebody in 'officialdom' to comment on this. :(

seems a bit daft though dont it i mean if someone wanted to pass of a clear one as real all they have to do is buy themselves a tin of paint

Agreed, but then that also applies to the purple and orange P99 in my local £ World. :)

Re: UK bans the import of replica props... 1st October 2007

Is anyone else surprised that some mainstream web sites in the UK are still selling MR blaster replicas? Play.com for example, who are still selling both the ESB Han LE, and the ANH Han EE - unless I've mis-interpreted the new law these are illegal to sell in the UK now?

Re: UK bans the import of replica props... 1st October 2007

So I could actually import a $330 Han ANH EE?

Interesting!

Play are based in Jersey, outside UK law. If someone in the UK chooses to buy a Han LE they'll face any problems, not Play.

I read it the same way,

(RIF) Realistic Imitation Firearm. This is something that clearly looks like a gun.

If you take a RIF and paint it one of the following colours, then it becomes an (IF) Imitation Firearm:

(a)bright red;
(b)bright orange;
©bright yellow;
(d)bright green;
(e)bright pink; and
(f)bright purple.

Imitation Firearm (IF's) are still legal to sell import or manufacture if you're over 18.

From this I gather that replica prop kits that resemble a firearm can still be imported as long as the resin is cast in one of the above mentioned colors and the person buying it is 18 or older.

Nope - that's excluded as well.

True - but Forbidden Planet (and a couple of others) still have Han EEs for sale as well, and they ship from within the UK....

Re: UK bans the import of replica props... 1st October 2007

So, Forbidden Planet are braking the law!? :eek

Or do the Han Solo ANH blasters not fall into the category?

Re: UK bans the import of replica props... 1st October 2007

.........just quickly- how might this work with, say, Weta rayguns?
Or has this been discussed already?

Re: UK bans the import of replica props... 1st October 2007

Just wondering... how do you know for sure? Unless someone has already has had a Solo blaster confiscated, then it would fall onto a customs officer's opinion if it is a RIF or not, wouldn't it?

A gun with a grille and big silvery knob on the end, with a bright orange insert no less, certainly speaks to be of a non realistic nature, in my opinion. Same with a Rebel Blaster. A Leia or Storm Trooper blaster on the other hand is a little harder to gauge.

Nope - that's excluded as well.

Re: UK bans the import of replica props... 1st October 2007

Guys

It may have already been asked, but where would one stand on a SID Deckard Blaster?
I want one so damn bad it hurts, but would a box of pewter bits in the mail from Italy fall in here?
I dont see how a model kit can come into this category, even if the popped it open, it would be plainly obvious its an "adult toy" lol.
Any thoughts or even experiences on this would be great!
