Trying to ID a postage stamp from a movie...

Okay, going on some of the suggestions that the central image is some kind of 'mode de transport'........car, train, wagon--was thinking caisson, maybe....

I got it figured out.....it's a picture of the moon rover!!

Well, the silhouette matches pretty well, if the color values were reversed!?!

I've a feeling when we actually discover what is on the stamp we are all going to have a laugh.
You're probably right, I just wish I could have my laugh, like, soon. :lol

In other news, I've been doing a lot more research & found some coincidental-ish things as I went. First of all, within the story of the film, the main character has been trying to get in contact with his mentor for several years. So, as you can see from the previous screencap, the mentor character has been receiving a lot of letters.

As I was searching through some online catalogs, I happened upon two of the OTHER stamps in the scene:

Apparently, the Rugby stamp is British (you can see the "LONDON" cancellation mark on the on-screen stamp), with a 1995 issue date. The American flag stamp is of U.S. origin (not sure I really needed to specify that, but I like to be thorough), & issued in 1999.

There is another stamp visible (in the first picture of the original post) which I haven't found. I tried to make out the cancellation on that one, but I can't quite see it.

My feeling is that the mystery stamp that I'm looking for is likely an existing [un-tampered with] postage stamp, since I can't figure why they would alter one, but not the others. *shrugs* In addition, I also feel that the mystery stamp would probably have been issued between 1999 - 2003. I believe this because (I'll try to make a long story short) the letter from that envelope talks about him having recently moved to Portland, OR, & having met (& started dating) a local woman. When the woman is interrogated by the authorities, she states that she has only known the character for around 8 months. (BTW, there is some discontinuity with the dates in the film, so the year could be 2001 or 2003) So I feel that was probably the most recent letter. ANYWAY, I'm not really sure I needed to give out all that info, I just wanted to let anyone following the thread know that the other postage stamps were authentic, which also gives my thread a quick bump for anyone who may not have seen it (or forgotten about it). :D

And thanks again for all the help. :cool:thumbsup

When I was a kid I used to have collector books with stamps that had stamps made just for the books, and not for use with postage. Since I don't see a value on the stamp, I wonder if it is one of those stamps, possibly history or time era themed. That would explain the multiple images on it.

Yep. That's the same message board from my original post:
And before anyone asks, I've already consulted with the members of a stamp-collector's message board. They were very helpful, but I didn't get any hard leads from them.
;)

There are some members over there who are still trying to help, but we've gotten farther here than they have...

I think the central image is a steam locomotive.
When I first started looking for it, that's exactly what I thought it was. But I haven't been able to confirm (or dismiss) that yet. STILL looking.

:wacko :wacko :wacko :wacko :wacko

P.S. I have an announcement to make: the world has a frak-load of different postage stamps.

Carry on.

Yeah, I just went blind from doing a Google Image Search for several different things - no dice.

Good luck.

Small, but fairly fruitless update.

I actually found the propmaker (Ray Lovasz) on 'Facebook'. I asked him about the stamps, & here is his response:

"no pix. the stamps could have been printed in a studio print shop. could be real. could be anything. propmakers are actually set carpenters, welders etc. this would have been in 'property' or 'props' dept. 'set dec or set dressing' is also possible. it's a 2nd unit shot which means it was not shot when the main scenes/actors were shot but done as a pick up shot on a different day by a different crew with a stand in's hands unless the camera actually pans up and you see the actor in one continuous uncut/unedited clip. set dec/dressing is anything that's a prop that is not touched by the talent. 'prop' dept handles props that actors physically touch or handle. not sure if it's props for 2nd unit/stand ins. could be set dec. sorry i couldn't be more help."

So, now I guess I'll see if I can contact any of the other names in the credit list that are in "property", "props", "set decoration", or "set dressing". Anyway, the search continues...

So - - - after DOZENS more hours of scouring various resources (and coming up frakking frustrated/empty-handed), I wanted to try one last thing.

I did an exhaustive search for a "ripped" High-Definition broadcast of this film (since it is still unavailable in Blu-ray) on the 'Net. And finally, I found a site that claimed to have a 1080p rip.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I was able to get a 1080p-quality screen-capture from the end of the flick:

In the 'cap, one can clearly see that the bottom of the stamp is covered in letters, but I couldn't really read it straight-out. I thought the first two letters were 'BO' or 'DO'. So I decided that I would start searching FreeStampCatalogue.com (using 'country' as the search criteria) for stamps from any country beginning with 'BO' or 'DO'. And since one of the other stamps in the scene was from 1995, I extended my search back to encompass 1995 - 2002.

And wouldn't you know it, I get halfway through 1996 in the 'Bosnia' section, &:

Man, there are like a BAJILLION stamps in the world, and I'll bet I looked through a good 50,000 of them. I may go out searching for the Ark of the Covenant next.

Anyway, thanks for the help everyone!

THREAD NECROMANCY!!!

It's been a little over 2 years since I started this thread, & something has been gnawing at me since then (probably a result of my slightly obsessive-compulsive nature).

I'm referring to the final unidentified postage stamp in the upper right portion of this screencap from the movie The Hunted:

1080pstmp.jpg

I've kept this photo on my PC desktop, opening it from time to time & just staring at it, to see if any new features happen to jump out at me.

TODAY, I'm fairly confident I've solved the mystery. This was made MUCH more difficult since: 1.) the mystery stamp is more out-of-focus than the other stamps in the scene, 2.) it's turned at a sideways/45-degree angle to the camera, and 3.) the visible graphics on the stamp are far more ambiguous than any of the others.

Anyway, while staring at the screencap, I decided to run it through some graphics software to try & enhance some of the colors/detail. First I noticed that the black circular mark in the upper left quadrant of the stamp was likely not a part of the stamp, but part of the cancellation mark (as there was a very similar mark to the left of the stamp, but still within the cancellation mark. I also started to wonder if the wording across the bottom of the cancellation might have said: "Philippines":

So I went back on FreeStampCatalogue.com, again using 'country' as the search criteria. About halfway through, I stumbled upon a stamp that I feel is a STRONG contender for this specimen.

To try & "nail the coffin shut" on this mystery, first I took the screencap from above, & using the graphics software, I rotated the stamp clockwise, & then straightened the perspective to try & achieve a straight-on view (keep in mind that some of the angles may be wonky due to the photoshopping, combined with the fact that the on-screen stamp is very weathered/wrinkled).

THEN I increased the color contrast to try & bring out more detail.

AFTER THAT, I took the photo of my candidate stamp, & blurred the focus using the software, & increased the color contrast. The original untouched stamp photo appears at the bottom. For me, there are just too many similarities for this not to be the right stamp. For instance:

1.) There are dark patches on the screencap, corresponding to the "PILIPINAS" designation, the "20.00" denomination, & the "PASSENGER SHIP" written down the right-side of the original stamp.
2.) The cloud/sky patterns/colors seem to match from screencap to original (light/dark/light/dark/light/dark), as well as the cabin portion of the vessel, along with the taller features on the ship (top-center & to the right towards the bow).
3.) There are darker colors in the ocean on the left-side, & lighter colors in the ocean on the right in both specimens.
4.) There is a mustard-colored frame around the stamp photo, that appears to also be present on the screen-used stamp.

laststamp.png

Initially, the red lines on the ship concerned me (since it is not visible on the screen-used piece), BUT when I blurred the original stamp, the red lines virtually disappeared.

SO, what do you think? CASE CLOSED? (I may have just dated myself here :$)
