Hey guys,
I read most of the replies here, and I just wanted to add my two cents.
In my opinion, Tron 2.0 is the true sequel to the first movie. They updated the general look of the programs, environments, etc, while retaining the very essence of the first TRON. Programs are energy trapped in an humanoid form, with the face of their User. Environments reflects what they are in reality ( the Web is a messy city, Thorne's PDA a small place with narrow corridors and so on ) and there's a Byte ( "A Bit ? Ha ! Never send a Bit to do a Byte's job ") amongst other things.
It's TRON, but expanded, evolved, bettered.
First thing I thought when watching the first trailer is : Where's the circuitry on them ? Where's the computer feeling ? Why is this looking like The Matrix ( also a " within computer " thing, I'll admit that ) ?
I didn't recognized a TRON universe.
I'll also quote a RPF member here :
" From the very first trailer, I knew without a doubt that this movie was an alternate take on the video game TRON 2.0, a game I
LOVED despite it's mediocre presence. It pretty much lifts everything from one of the main characters having a son (instead of Alan it's Flynn), the son getting zapped into the computer world, the son being forced to fight in light cycle races, the son being rescued by the female program DURING the light cycle game, the female program being taken out of the story part way, the son's dad finding a way to bring the female program back ect, ect. There are a lot of numerous story points that I just cried foul on because they all happened in Tron 2.0 and it was done a lot better in that game. It broke my heart that they didn't include the game as canon. "
My feeling exactly.
Another member ( sorry pal, cannot remember your name but you have an orange avatar ) quoted more of connections between Tron 2.0 and Legaçy. I could add more ( Clu's ship full of warriors at the end, the nice program going rogue, etc ).
My point is : While Legaçy is a very entertaining movie, visually really impressive and fun to watch, it sucks at being a sequel. It's like they tried to adapt the game, failed at it or ( worse ) didn't want to recognize they were adaptating it, and ended up with Legaçy. All the rules established in the first movie are forgotten, most of the stuff people was really expecting didn't really happened ( Digitization process, Tron fighting Clu after being fully redeemed ) and added a big WTF at the end ( Flynn's death, Quorra in the sun ).
I really don't know if I want more of this alternate TRON universe. Can't decide.
Gosh. Now I want to play Tron 2.0 for the fith time.
