Tron Legacy - Identity Disk Holder

So I made a disk holder for the convention I attended last weekend so I had a place to hold my disk.

It allowed for me to quickly pull the disk off and put it back in place. Small craft magnets held the disk in place.

The first run at a con went over well. I had people bumping into my disk but it held tight. I could also pop it off easily whenever needed.

Below are photos of the prototype 1.0 disk holder:

Now I am working on version 2.0. I am filling in all the empty spots to make it more movie like. Tonight I am waiting for the two part resin to dry so I can start sanding it down.

Nice job!! Can't wait to see the result of your work. Keep up!

Wonder if you can do like when Gem put disc on Sam and turn "c" light on? That will be awesome!

I am modding my disk right now as well. I was thinking of adding a switch that would turn on the center disk light, or light up a ring under the disk. We will see how handy i get with switches.

Yeah thats the basic style I am going for, but making it work better for real life. I added the small tab at the top so it is much safer to deal with the disk. In fact at Chattacon (the convention I beta tested it) i could toss the disk back there with hardly a thought or care and it always landed in place. The tab also held it when other people bumped it hard, allowing the magnets enough time to pull the disk back in place.

Mines also a little taller, just to give the disk enough to hold onto.

Thanks for the image though, I have a lot of them in my reference folder, but for some reason I missed that one when looking for good views of the mount!

Fair enough! I had thought about this kinda thing for awhile since it's just one of those things that interest me. I figured one way of doing this, was getting a somewhat soft clay (moldable of course) and pressing down onto it with the disk, that way it'd get the form perfectly.

My plan on this, which should technically work, is a metal base, kind of like an upside down pie pan. Steel, hammered out for size/shape, and adding 4 notches in it to line up where the 4 magnet/LED points are on the inside of the disc.

That would allow for the disc to settle/line up correctly on the base, and for the earth magnets to also hold the disc securely to the base.

Yea, thats one thing about one of the screen used disk, is that it obviously had mounted the magnets on one side. No other real reason to not use it as the securing method, cause I don't think it was for looks!

We'd need to find some stronger rare earth metal magnets though in that size. The ones for the disk appear just slightly larger than the 1/8 style I'm used to using from radioshack. Although strong for their size, I don't think they'd be strong enough for the disk.

You guys see how my disk was held on. With craft magnets bought at hobby lobby it worked all night. on my next version i am upgrading to 4 rare earth magnets and metal on the inside of the mount. it will definitely hold with that set up.

the mount is being molded right now. expect pictures soon of the final product.

What size magnets did you use? Could you post a pic of the inside portion of your disk?

Oh, and update on the holder -

The silicone mold is finished, and I went ahead and molded the c ring off the disk. I am going to cast the C -ring in crystal clear resin but make it half height so I can fit some 5mm EL Wire underneath it.

Some good progress there :)

I was thinking if someone was looking for a real quick disc holder for costuming (which they may still have already), would be the packaging that held the disc when they bought it.

Cut off the outer portion, add a coat of primer and maybe black plastidip, then four strong magnets (glued to the inside of the packaging) and four on the back of the disc, and you'd have a holder.

I haven't tryed it yet, but it looks like it would work....
Here is a picture of the packaging:

Great idea propmaster2000. I can't wait to see more progress pics.

so that's what the op used for the original mold. I was wondering what the point of the rectangular cutout and asymmetrical notches on the side were. good to see that the casts for sale are cleaned up and not straight from the packaging.

yeah i was trying to get it done super fast for a convention. i am split, even thought the smooth on is more movie like, the extra notches and cut out add some detail to it. i will probably offer both on the site.

Just pulled the first two out of the new mold today. will have pics later tonight.

Just finished getting all the pictures online. Here are the finished versions. I am waiting for my first 45 days to go by, then I will post a link to the storefront in the junkyard.

its just the standard Rinzler disk gutted. I have the clear C ring casting now. I am going to put red/orange 5mm El cord behind it. that should be done next week. Ill post pics when i get that finished.
