Tron legacy Disk - My quick attempt

So, lighting this badboy. Not sure which option would be best, having not seen the size of an EL control box, would that be the better option? Or if LEDs, What kind of circuit are we talking, lots of LEDs running in parallel (if so, how many/what batteries to use) or something else? I have a little electronics experience, but not enough. Would like to order the lights so I can get this working ASAP.

Does anyone think this would be a viable option? 25cm SMD Flexible Ribbon 12V LED Strip Neon Light Blue - eBay LED Lights, Lights, Indicators, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 18-Jul-10 23:57:05 AEST)

Correct me if I am wrong, but you could put 4 AA batteries within the cavity and wire them up to the LEDs around the center and edge?

First off great job on the Tron Legacy ID disc.

I have always loved the Tron series since the first movie. I can't wait for the Legacy movie to come out.

I don't know if you have seen this at Entertainment Earth site? It's a Tron Legacy Deluxe Identity Disc Replica maybe the photo on this site can help you out for reference in your project? Maybe?

Keep up the great work on this project, it looks really great.

I'm hoping to get that light disc toy and mod it to make it brighter. Hopefully It wont be too hard to mod.

Well, reading the item description, the leds are 3/5cm. I'm not sure if that's the best density for the led lights. I am planning on soldering individual leds in manually, primarily because I've never done it and I want this to look good. I'm hoping to use ~120 for the whole thing.

Okay, now that's an awesome replica for under $30. :D Second most impressive replica of a Memory Disc since seeing wondersquid's work in progress. :D

i'm not sure if this will be useful to anybody, but i've taken my deluxe identity disc apart to give others a better idea of what it's like on the inside: tron deluxe identity disc dissection - a set on Flickr

my line of thinking is there's potential for more leds -especially on the other side where it's painted, and it would be cool if you can keep the whole thing lit by simply plugging it via micro / mini usb -but would apparently require more electronics.

wow am I late to the game on this one...but this looks GREAT!!!
Are there still any plans to do another run, maybe WITH electronics??? :confused

GREAT work everyone!:thumbsup

It also appears that the four small notches at the outside edge have been filled and painted over, every photo from the movie I've seen they are clearly still there.

I've been considering using two of the deluxe discs, and mating the "beauty" sides to start, it wouldn't take much to build up the area around the magnets and recreate the recess.

Hey Squid-
any updates on getting a lighting kit worked out...movie is a little over a month away, hope you're still active with this!!!!

whoa i'm very late to this one! is there still any shells left? i would love to have a few! my eldest brother works at intel and can easily help me wire up some small if not micro electronics so it will be light enough to still use as a frisbee!

Well i guess this is the cap on this thread, I finally got one lighted for the midnight premiere party at my theater. I still have so many bugs to work out, but everyone thought it looked cool. What's your thoughts?
