Tron legacy Disk - My quick attempt

Did anyone want one of these? I thought I saw a post about this yesterday, (maybe I've been working too hard) but I thought the design was simple enough, so I did a drawing in about an hour and I think I can make one of these by weeks end. That is if nothing else comes up at home. Anyone else got better reference?

This is the shot I used and drew up this as a vector layout to build from. More pics to come as I build.:)

Very nice. You spotted the lines I've noticed.

The 4 little "U" shapes in lighter blue - I would suggest that the ends aren't semi-spherical, but more like a skewed oval.

Nice vector!

You probably noticed, but in case you didn't: The inner light ring is not a complete circle, makes a very close C. You can see the rounded ends on either side of the person's finger.

They must be found and made to divulge all their secrets! :)
Great job on the disc so far. This would be cool all lit up.

I also noticed the outer ring retracts. When you first see the disc, it's not there and it quickly pops out from inside the disc... I assume that's a CG effect...

Chronos: Yeah, I didn't notice that the inner ring was not a circle, thanks for the careful eye.
And yeah, if anyone knows the infamous "Rick" then a shout out to him, I'd love to see what the actual thing looks like.
sorry for the lousy pics, my camera phone, I always work so fast I forget to have a camera to take pictures.

Very cool project! I'll be watching this one for sure!

I don't want to speak for Rick, but I have my doubts we'll have much "visual" input from him as much of the time he's mentioned being under legal NDAs that keeps him from showing any pics of what he makes prior to the films release. Although he's really forthcoming with information much of the time. He's a super nice guy!

-B89! :D

Hopefully he'll be able to share a little about them close to (or after) the film releases in theaters... Long wait I know, but it's better than never knowing the details... :)

Here's another one of my abnormal thoughts: We know that the original memory discs were foam Frisbees that could actually be thrown (not acting in the same manner as they do in the film, but in the normal manner as any Frisbee would). Would the new memory disc design work like the Frisbee or would it just go crashing to the ground? Yes, I know, it depends on the material its made from, but I'm actually asking about the design of it and it's practicality as a possible, partially functional prop (like the memory disc prop in the original film was, as it did not go flying around doing loopy-loops and such).

check out the aerobie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerobie

not only flies like a frisbee - but had the world record for the longest unassisted throw for a number of years... until a boomerang took it.

so yes - a frisbee with a hole cut out of the middle will certainly fly.

Cool beans! Thanks for sharing that info. I didn't know about the Aerobie. But in comparison to the new memory disc design, it looks like that the Aerobie is, basically, like the "blade" of the disc. So, if you wanted to do a memory disc of the new design that is partially functional (as I'm sure that the memory disc in the new film will also have the act the same way in its movements to that in the first film), you'd have to utilize lightweight material (and/or utilize an Aerobie for the "blade" of the memory disc itself).

Sorry, abnormal thinking again. :p

Well, almost anything flat and round will fly if you throw it hard enough... :cool

The Aerobie's flight records are also partially due to the 'fins' on it. Hard to see from the photo, but there's a slight lip all around the outer edge that helps provide lift, and keep it stable, while the disc is spinning through the air...

But, cut a big O out of a piece of plastic, it'll fly. It just depends on if you want record flights, or just be able to toss it around.

Balance would be key though. If you have electronics in it, and all your batteries on one side, it won't fly well (if at all). Make a nice, relatively aerodynamic shape, and balance it, it should do okay. Would look cool at night!

This is the infamous Rick you are asking about.

I doubt he can devuldge any pics or info as he is a professional prop make and probably has a gag order by the studios until after the movie comes out.

Anyway, he's a great guy.

Yeah, I think he already talked about making them somewhere here (helmets too), but that he couldn't share any info or photos until the movie was released (or really close). He caught some flak for showing off a Watchmen prop too early, so I'm sure he's very cautious about it now. Here's his site though:

All kinds of neat build photos of some of the stuff he's done...
