Tron legacy Disk - My quick attempt

The outer ring in the second trailer is a digital effect. It grows when the disc is activated. Looks like the glove serves as a ring/program identity device, so it doesn't derez the owner. There's a repeating comb like teeth effect inside both rings. The outer ring is completely absent when it's contained on the programs back. These pictures also show us that a practical real world version of the disc was made with the outer rings active.

Great pic! More importantly, it looks like the suits actually have EL fabric in the clothes! That's pretty damn cool!

This is turning out really really awesome! I hope you can get these up for sale, I would LOVE to have one :D.

This is one of those items we need to have to take to the movie theater opening night!
Oh, and for the lighting, try looking up something called "flat-lite". its a paper-thin sheet of EL that glows the same color as we see in the movie - it's the stuff that was used in Marty's 2015 Nike shoes for the light-up logo. Jedifyfe should know what I'm talking about.

Well after some work here is the new prototype. It's only one side, since I will be coping and placing them back to back to create a full disk. I'm thinking about a number of options and varients[...]
Option 1 - The two disks, vacuformed clear, a colored acrylic center that represents the lighted outer ring.

Option 2 - The two disks poured in resin and glued back to back to represent the inactive or non- fighting mode. Possibly painted with glow in the dark paint for the x-box power symbol stripe.

Option 3 - 2 vacuformed disks with the outer edge combined into the vacuform and lit with blue leds on the inside, possibly with a chaser circuit to make the outer ring glow and move in a spinning circle?

Everyone's comments and thoughts have been amazing so far. [...]

I think I speak for my fellow RPFers when I say if you're going to do it, don't shoot for the moon - shoot for the stars!
If you feel you are able to make several versions (stunt, hero) then that is always a good choice....like Samuel Adams....
I for one would like to have a lighted version to take with me to the midnight premier when the movie is released.
Go for it! Lookin' good so far! Though, sometime down the line there may be licensed prop replicas...and someone needs to feed the hungry fanboys until that happens, so keep up the good work!

hey, wondersquid, the disc looks amazing! Keep up the good work. [...]

Great project, I´m sure that wondersquid will put up an interest thread in the junkyard once the project is finished. Until then, please no soliciting outside the Junkyard in any form.

Wondersquid, wonderful work!

And may I point out that there are several frisbees on the market that contain LED's that light up when thrown or act as chasers. You could probably gut one of those for your disc and save yourself some work?

WOW!! Man, that really looks fantastic!!! I liked the first version you did, but this one takes it to the next level!

Great work, program! ;)
-B89! :D

That looks fantastic!

I like the lit up option. Not sure about 'chasing' lights though.

The inner C shaped ring is like that so the outer unlit holding part of disc could be cast from a mold as one part.

If that inner ring was a full circle the unlit parts would be comprised of 4 pieces- 2 on both sides.

You should make a completely new part that contains just the inner C ring and outer ring light up part. A fit in form.

You should take the original ring and shave it down on the other side until it has thin even thickness.

Then you cut out the inner C part. Make a two part mold off of it. This way you don't have to clean out the C ring area. Cast these parts up in resin.

Vacforming the inner ring sounds cool, but there will be a seam lines where both parts are joined together.

I'd think it would be better to use a clear resin for this part.

This part would have to be rotocast to get the even uniform thickness. I would dye the resin. Orange for orange, blue for blue. Spray paint the inside of the cast with a matte white or something like that to enhance the glow effect if it has a light system inside it

I would also suggest keying this inner ring shape.

Maybe a set of 4 simple negative cylinder shapes going in.

You only need to do one side, cast up two parts in resin, join them, bondo job on the seam line, prime and sand, two part mold the final result to make the inner ring part.

You give the inside of the outer holding ring shape the positive cylinder key forms. Squeeze them onto the inner ring.

Wow, you've definitely given this more thought then I did. Your right on all accounts, just not sure if I have enough silicone for that many parts. I usually try to go the cheap route, but your way is how I did my toy stuff. I would then cast everything in color and try not to paint anything. Although I think you've given me an idea on how to handle the outer ring, let me experiment on that and get back to you. Thanks again, great ideas!:thumbsup

By the way, I have to move the sale part of this over to Junkyard, so when I finish a lighted one, look for another thread in the junkyard later.:love

So here are the vacuforms. I ran them clear so i can paint the inside and still get the shiny appearance. I did a quick paint on one side to see how it would look, I think it's pretty cool. I have to build the interior and get the LEDs and circuit together, but should have the lighted one soon. Wish me luck.:lol

I'm having a lot of fun watching this thread and your progress pics! I can't wait to see one lit up.
