Tron Animation Cel (Clu in Tank)

Just acquired my second Tron animation cel and this one is absolutely epic:

This cel features Clu (Jeff Bridges) inside his hacker tank. As 90% of the cyberspace scenes were shot on an all-black set and were to be matted in by traditional hand-painted backgrounds, this is one of the few scenes that had an actual set with real, functioning set pieces. This minimal set also allowed camera movement and z-moves with an otherwise motionless camera.

As you can see, the presence of the set instead of a all-black background really makes the cel stand out and provides an amazing amount of detail with the 12" x 20" kodalith cel.

The origin of the cel began as live-action black and white 70mm film which was then transferred to a rotoscoping machine where it was copied onto this 12" x 20" kodalith cel. The animation cel was then shot with various passes and mattes to provide color for the body, the tank interior, and lightbox was placed underneath the cel to provide the light for the glowing circuitry effect along with other effects animation for glowing panels in the tank interior.

Here's more pics:

Hope you guys enjoy it! :D

I have some animation art cels, I don't really collect anymore, but when I did I was always on the look out for stuff from Tron. I only once saw something come up for sale, at eBay of all places, and I still kick myself for not buying it. Nice score.

Thanks guys...glad you like it :)

There's a few Tron cels on ebay right now, but you gotta look up the right terms, like "Tron kodalith" or "tron contrast". I would love cels from the deleted love scene or any of the test footage.

Oh my oh my! I have to get one of these, thanks for sharing the images of your cel, I'm off to eBay now!

Great cell MrSinister, nice score :thumbsup Definately one of the better cells out there, thanks for sharing :)

That looks so cool and abstract! Should look great framed up on a wall.

Super jealous!

What's the other cel you have?

Nick

Interesting piece, seems weird to see it in black and white. But after you described how they lit it up it makes sense.

Thanks so much, Nick, newworld and propaholic :D

If you haven't be sure to watch the 1.5 hour long documentary on the Making of Tron on the Bluray/DVD. It goes into great detail on how the animation was made for the movie. This blog link has a great explaination and photos as well :) Nuno Miranda's Original Film Props Collection: Tron (1982) Original animation Kodalith Set 001

Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece and for the link to Muno Miranda's site. It's even more amazing when you realize how much manual artistic work, and how little early CGI, actually went in to making that movie.

Thanks a lot, Terry. Yeah, it's simply shocking when you just realize how much labor went into making a single frame for the movie. It's something I think more people should understand about.

It's a real travesty that Tron didn't get nominated for an Oscar, but the silver lining is that the movie is still appreciated even after all these years.

Awesome Clu kodalith. Definitely should be framed. I think it's tough to find good ones. I was kind of looking a while back. A guy had a bunch of good ones on his site but I can't find it now.

Thanks a lot guys for all the comments! :D

I'm looking for a frame for it right now. I also ID'd the frame from the movie, so I'll post a screen cap in a bit.
