Tron Animation Cel (Clu in Tank)

I have a couple of those too - framed one of them:

It's just a standard frame I got at Aaron Bros., except I got a piece of milk plex to use as the backing:

......I didn't feel like have a custom frame made, so I took some art cardstock and made a matte for the top and bottom. Aaron Bros now stocks those metal and wood frames that you buy sections for and assemble. They are a little thicker than this and might be able to accommodate both the glass and the plex.

Even without a lightsource behind it, you can make out the scene. But this way, I can take it down and put it on a light table:

I got mine at Van Eaton Gallery here in L.A. (well, Sherman Oaks, actually) a number of years ago. I don't know if they have any left. One word of caution - though these things are likely impossible to fake (I don't know if you can even get Kodaliths shot any more), there were so many made for hi-con mattes, etc, that you need to be careful that you don't pick up one of those by mistake.

See how there is a gray tone in Jeff Bridges face and in the shadow areas here? -

........ well, that goes away with the Hi-con kodaliths. It's still a B&W film. And it's still from "TRON". It just doesn't have the tonal range these kodaliths do.

Speaking of "TRON" gear - I pulled this light table out of our Art Dept. when we moved into a new building and had no need for it:

......we used to look at film wedges on it, but since we do it all digitally, we don't actually look at film on a light table any more.

Anyways, the company goes waaayyy back - many of the people here were veterans of Robert Abel (where this light table design originated) and "TRON" (where this light table was used). So, in a way, this is a piece of film used furniture. As one "TRON" vet said when he saw it in my home office, "If you only knew how many rails of coke we did on those things.... There's probably some left over powder in the corners." :cool

Thanks so much for sharing, Gene!! :D Such a beautiful kodalith and great pictures!

Also, thanks a lot for the advice on the frame; that's gonna help me out a lot!

Hi-cons are pretty ugly looking, since, like you said, have very little gray scale:

Also, it seems to me that all the Hi-Cons that I've seen are printed on paper, rather than celluloid.

Love the story about the table too! :lol
