TRON 3 ?!

Not a Leto fan. Don't understand the point of doing this movie without Sam Flynn and Quorra

It could also easily be solved in that Quorra died being in the world (incompatible or whatever) and Sam didn't need to ever go back to the Grid and moved away. Hell, them not being involved is just fine without a reason because why would they be? They have nothing to add. Their story was done 15 years ago.

The most egregious thing about this all, is that it feels like a cynical ploy just to keep the IP.

I think Disney owns 'Tron' outright. There wouldn't be any motive to reboot it just to hold onto it.

Exactly. It was Steven Lisberger's baby, but the IP is owned by Disney. I would love to see another cameo by Lisberger; he was fleeting in Tron: Legacy.

I love that they seem to blatantly ignore three major plot points established in TRON Legacy:

1. Quorra clearly pointed out that the light cycles couldn't operate off-grid. Yet they have them running around in the real world without any issue;

2. The portal to the real world was destroyed when Kevin Flynn and CLU reintegrated. Yet Ares is somehow able to still access the real world;

3. Kevin Flynn DIED. Yet Jeff Bridges is coming back for the third film;

Hopefully the above plot holes are explained to some degree in the upcoming film, although I suspect they'll just decide to ignore all that.

I liked the first two films, honestly not sure if I'm going to enjoy this installment as much. We'll see what October brings.

Personally, I wish they would go back to the look of the first film. I know that doesn't jive with today's computer technology, but still, it looked cooler. If you are old enough to remember seeing it in the theaters when it first came out you know how mind-boggling it was to see that. It was something totally new. My mind was not blown upon viewing the second one.

Legacy was a complete waste of time. I'll probably watch this with zero expectations.
Agreed. I saw Legacy. I own Legacy. I didn't care about Legacy. It's fine for what it is, but as far as I'm concerned, the TRON franchise ended with the first movie and there is no reason whatsoever to ever make more. It's not like it's some grand story. It told a complete story in the first movie. Legacy was unnecessary. Ares is unnecessary. I love the first movie. I don't need anything else.

Here's an idea - what if this new movie flat-out ignores 'Legacy' and just presents itself as Tron #2?

I don't have a grudge against 'Legacy'. But they didn't build on it, and now it feels pretty late to pick up that thread again. It limits their storytelling options (just by existing) but it didn't leave much in the way of new assets to show for it. From what I understand this new movie isn't re-using the 'Legacy' protagonists.

I 100% agree with this sentiment. The original movie showed the Programs within the Grid as individually distinct with a their own customs and classes and had costumes and dress of their own. Not everyone had traceboard leotards. Everyone wearing the same black and sleek armor-plated jumpsuit is really homogenous and boring visually, and the visuals is literally all Tron ever had going for it. Without interesting and unique art direction, there is absolutely nothing interesting about Tron. Nothing. The imagery of the original movie tickles my brain in a way few things do; it appeals to me on a level I can't begin to describe. I think the animated show Tron: Uprising brought some of that back but nothing ever got close to capitalizing on the concept that the original did.

Seriously, look at how gorgeous this is:

All the implicit design elements in negative space with nothing but simple geometries... It's gorgeous.
(also, what's with lightcycles not being able to turn sharp right angles anymore? That's the stand-out set piece of the original movie.)

Funny enough, the best logical step in terms of evolving the original design of Tron came from Midjourney AI some years back with "Jodorowsky's Tron". Not all of it looks great but it is a great starting point I think:

I absolutely want a to make a number of these concept pieces real.

I just want them to reissue the Atari 2600 Tron Joystick with the Tron arcade game built in, and a wireless HDMI adaptor for it. Is that too much to ask?

I didn't like Tron Legacy that much and watched the recent Tron 3 teaser trailer. Usually I have a no trailer rule unless it's a movie series with bad entries like Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. I only liked some things Tron Legacy: the music, a few designs, and Quorra's character. So far, I'm still not impressed with what I'm seeing in Tron 3. I'll pass on the main trailer though when it's released.

I did read on a forum or site somewhere that Hasbro teased possible figures or something. So I'm kind of looking forward to that more than the movie as maybe we'll get stuff from Tron or Tron Legacy too.

It could also easily be solved in that Quorra died being in the world (incompatible or whatever).

They could do whatever with Tron 3 and Quorra's story. However, she shouldn't be incompatible in the real world as she was an ISO and using Flynn's biological material. Something Tron Legacy didn't establish anywhere near enough. But that was the main point of the ISO creation from what I remember. Anything could go wrong but still not the best storyline to go down. Part of me is hoping for a surprise kind of like how I didn't expect Olivia Wilde in Ghostbusters.
