Anybody know the source for the rubber sleeve? It reminds me of a grip my dads old screwdriver set had
Yeah, the video looks more like it did when I examined it--that was a very long time ago. The photo looks much worse than what I remember. It’s never been 100% identified…the theory is that it was sourced from a SEARS screwdriver handle.
I think it’s unlikely we will find the original source as the rubber appears not to hold up too well…the scanner’s handle is vulcanizing and crumbling as we speak:

I'm never a big fan of rubber parts on props for this reason, regardless of what type of rubber it is, it always degrades. It’s never been 100% identified…the theory is that it was sourced from a SEARS screwdriver handle.

I thought I would post a pic of both the Medical and Science Scanners for sizing purposes. If you got the medical the Science Scanner is a must have. Correlian sells these with or without sound. The sound is from the ultimate computer. It is awesome. The 2nd one back there plays the medical scanner sound.
It would be a fopar for Wand not to offer a medical scanner.
You know….on the subject of Medical scanners….in the episode “Man Trap”….the use of the medical scanner is the longest period of time, that I know of it being used on screen in any STOS series episodes. If someone can find an episode where the medical scanner is used for a longer period of time…kindly let me know.
Yet the sound effect is quite different than the one commonly attributed to the medical scanner. Why not give this different sound effect the recognition it deserves…why not incorporate it into props? I mean the whole point to medically scanning is to scan for problems or the state of health of a being. The “Man Trap” is the best example of medical craft in practice. Yet the sound effect of the medical scanner of this episode is all but forgotten….imo.
Here’s the clip…..

Here’s a portion of the sound effect isolated…..

Yeah, you can hear them in several episodes, whenever they turned it on during dialogue. Journey to Babel when McCoy is examining Sarek in his quarters, Elaan of Troyus when Spock is examining the dilithium crystal necklace, and other episodes as well.“The Way To Eden” has some good closeups….and you can actually “hear” the gears of the scanner whirring when Deforest activates it.
That's good to know, I already have one of his scanners.I’m on it……I’m on his interest list for the 2025 run of Science Scanners Kit version $190.00 ea Qty. 2. I opted not to get the finished buildup version $350 ea …since I have a soldering iron waiting to have some fun
It made no sense to me to frenzy buy (imo) Medical Scanners for Science Tricorder’s. Also, if Wand ever sells a Medical Tricorder version, I have no doubt they’ll also offer their version of the medical scanner since being “Medical” they are both inherently associated together on many episodes. It would be a fopar for Wand not to offer a medical scanner.
A Bluetooth connected medical scanner for a possible future Wand Medical Tricorder has been floated in a TWC blog post already.
Correlian‘s quality is on par with Trek Classic’s imo.
I posted this on Correlian‘s thread yesterday, and…Yes!!…his Science Scanner version will fit into the bottom compartment of Wand’s tricorder. Of course you won’t be able to use the compartment dividers.
The Science Scanner is 3 1/8 length and 1 1/4 diameter.
A piece of wooden dowel cut to those dimensions is shown….fitting horizontally. Forget about vertical.

Science Scanner’s for Science Tricorder’s……makes sense to me![]()
