Trek Classic Medical Scanner Mark I

Anybody know the source for the rubber sleeve? It reminds me of a grip my dads old screwdriver set had

It’s never been 100% identified…the theory is that it was sourced from a SEARS screwdriver handle.

I think it’s unlikely we will find the original source as the rubber appears not to hold up too well…the scanner’s handle is vulcanizing and crumbling as we speak:

Yeah, the video looks more like it did when I examined it--that was a very long time ago. The photo looks much worse than what I remember.

If I owned that thing, I'd consider giving it to Tom Spina for restoration. On the other hand, I'd be concerned about the Ship of Theseus thing. Maybe just conservation would be better. But somebody should do something before the rubber disintegrates altogether.

I'm never a big fan of rubber parts on props for this reason, regardless of what type of rubber it is, it always degrades.
I would definitely resin print a replacement sleeve to give the prop longevity of I ever pick one up.

So since I have both the DStines and the Mark1 I thought I would post a couple pictures of both. Also, Since I was the 1st one that bought the Mark 1 I guess about 6 months ago. Mine is not numbered it is the Artist Proof. Lucky me.
Anyhow both are identical except when you take off the bottom cover. By the way the sound is way louder when that cover is off.

I thought I would post a pic of both the Medical and Science Scanners for sizing purposes. If you got the medical the Science Scanner is a must have. Correlian sells these with or without sound. The sound is from the ultimate computer. It is awesome. The 2nd one back there plays the medical scanner sound.

I’m on it……I’m on his interest list for the 2025 run of Science Scanners Kit version $190.00 ea Qty. 2. I opted not to get the finished buildup version $350 ea …since I have a soldering iron waiting to have some fun :)

It made no sense to me to frenzy buy (imo) Medical Scanners for Science Tricorder’s. Also, if Wand ever sells a Medical Tricorder version, I have no doubt they’ll also offer their version of the medical scanner since being “Medical” they are both inherently associated together on many episodes. It would be a fopar for Wand not to offer a medical scanner.

A Bluetooth connected medical scanner for a possible future Wand Medical Tricorder has been floated in a TWC blog post already.

Correlian‘s quality is on par with Trek Classic’s imo.

I posted this on Correlian‘s thread yesterday, and…Yes!!…his Science Scanner version will fit into the bottom compartment of Wand’s tricorder. Of course you won’t be able to use the compartment dividers.

The Science Scanner is 3 1/8 length and 1 1/4 diameter.

A piece of wooden dowel cut to those dimensions is shown….fitting horizontally. Forget about vertical.

One I would like to add to my collection is the rarely seen “Who Mourns for Adonais?“ Mark II Medical Scanner.

It looks nearly identical to the Mark I, but with a “pebbled” grip and a button located at a different position than the Mark I.

You know….on the subject of Medical scanners….in the episode “Man Trap”….the use of the medical scanner is the longest period of time, that I know of it being used on screen in any STOS series episodes. If someone can find an episode where the medical scanner is used for a longer period of time…kindly let me know.

Yet the sound effect is quite different than the one commonly attributed to the medical scanner. Why not give this different sound effect the recognition it deserves…why not incorporate it into props? I mean the whole point to medically scanning is to scan for problems or the state of health of a being. The “Man Trap” is the best example of medical craft in practice. Yet the sound effect of the medical scanner of this episode is all but forgotten….imo.

Here’s the clip…..

Here’s a portion of the sound effect isolated…..

Here is a rare picture of the actual “Big 3” scanners, seen throughout the series, for size comparison.

…yep, the Tormolen scanner did, in fact, have a communicator moire ring on top, as many have theorized in the past:

(Note that the original toggle switch had been replaced by a slide switch, at the time this photo was taken…I assume this was late season two)

The Way To Eden” has some good closeups….and you can actually “hear” the gears of the scanner whirring when Deforest activates it.

Yeah, you can hear them in several episodes, whenever they turned it on during dialogue. Journey to Babel when McCoy is examining Sarek in his quarters, Elaan of Troyus when Spock is examining the dilithium crystal necklace, and other episodes as well.

When you're editing dialogue, you always cut away every part of the original stem except the actual speech, to eliminate having to solve unwanted noise problems and make matching your cuts easier. Then you lay room tone--the ambient sound recorded on set usually--under the whole scene, and that makes the dialogue editing sound seamless.

When there's noise directly under the speech, usually you dub it over (called looping back then, today it's called ADR). But on Trek's limited schedule, there just wasn't time (or budget probably) to loop every instance of noise, so they left it in. And it's all over the place in the show if you listen for it.

From what I've observed, TOS only looped when the location sound was unusable (wind noise, for instance), or where an actor on stage was facing away from the mic and his line didn't pick up well. Because of the technology back then, it's very easy to tell the on-set recorded speech from the looped stuff. Today it's virtually impossible due to the array of available digital tools.

But I digress... yeah, you can hear the motor on the show. :p

That's good to know, I already have one of his scanners.
