Tomenosuke Blade Runner 2049 blaster build

Yep, leave it as is: it's looking very good and I wouldn't try to achieve perfection (the enemy of "Good enough");):cool:(y)(y)

Agreed about the cast-metal splotchiness. I wound up doing several passes (around 10?) before I got a finish I was okay with. I then hit it with some 0000 steel wool and then a final coat of future floor polish and then another very light pass of steel wool again.

Thanks! That’s more of the type of finish I’d like to have. Did you use Super Blue or something else?

The Tomen instructions say Aluminum Black.

My first one (2007?) I used aluminum black:

The one posted above I used super blue. Aluminum black for how it looks now, and blue for how it looked in the movies. I think you’re getting there, just keep doing a few rounds with really light steel wool polishing between each round until you get a base coat you’re happy with, and then a few more rounds with super blue and a microfiber cloth buffing between coats instead of steel wool. You’re trying to saturate it so that you minimize the absorption differences.

Giving it a light coat of acrylic (the floor wax) after coloring will give it a nice flat sheen.

After a lot of trial and error, I think I finally got the finish where I would like it. Appreciate all the tips and suggestions folks offered!

Most of the smaller pieces were relatively easy to finish - applied a few treatments of the Super Blue, dipped in water to stop the reaction, and then polished with light steel wool passes in between.

But with the receiver, I could not get a uniform finish. And the steel wool would remove the blueing in some areas but not others.

For me, what I found worked best was to dilute the Super Blue with water, and put it in a large enough cup that I could completely submerge the entire receiver.

Afterwards, I buffed the receiver with a cloth rag followed by a microfiber cloth. This seemed to work well.

After I left the piece to sit for a bit, I came back to it and didn’t like how light the finish was. Since the other pieces came out relatively dark, I wanted the receiver to match. So after a few more dips in the Super Blue / water solution (~4 dips that were each ~10 min in duration), I finally achieved the darker finish I had set out for.

Lastly, I applied some of the Birchwood Casey Barricade, which helps prevent rusting. I found this gave the piece a nice overall finish but also emits a scent akin to real firearms, creating a more immersive experience of what a real-world blaster might provide and not just the “look.”

Really excited to have gotten to this step and look forward to start assembling this thing!
