Tombstone Val Kilmer / Doc Holliday Costume

Trying to find Val’s/Doc’s wardrobe and props is pretty tough and sometimes a guy just has to use something that is pretty close :)

Case in point are these cufflinks. The second photo is a blown up photo of Val’s original cufflinks that he wears with his first outfit that we see him in when he is playing poker with Ed Bailey. The first photo are some cufflinks I found to use for my outfit that I replicating.

Like I said, sometimes you just have to find something that works for you ;)

Posted this little bit of information on my Facebook page this morning.

Val's/Doc's Second Outfit

Here is the next outfit you see Doc wearing in the movie Tombstone. I like to call this outfit "Welcome to Tombstone" as this is the outfit Doc is wearing when he first meets the Earps when they arrive in town.

Doc's outfit consist of these items....................

1. Doc's Black Cowboy Hat (he wears this hat throughout the entire movie).

2. A Silk Maroon Cravat with a Diamond Stud Tie Pin.

3. Doc's shirt is a (from what I can tell) a White tuxedo shirt with a wing tip collar and pleated bib.

4. Doc's pants are black and white pinstripe frontier wool pant.

5. Doc is wearing a gray town frock coat. The coat comes down to right above the knees and it has three buttons on the front that are covered with the same fabric as the coat, and there are two of the same buttons on the back of the coat. The coat has a pocket flap on each side of the coat and a breast pocket on the upper lefthand side on the front of the coat.

6. Doc's vest is a silver double breasted vest with a very unique pattern which also appears to have black polka dots in it. The vest has eight silver buttons, and it seems to have a shawl collar (rounded). I do not see any pockets in this vest as Doc is not wearing his pocket watch with it.

7. Doc is wearing his black shoulder rig in this scene. His nickel-plated Colt (EMF) .45 Single Action Army is in the holster. Doc's 1877 Colt Lightning is in his right front pocket of his pants with the butt of the pistol facing Doc's left hand.

8. I know Doc is wearing suspenders with this outfit, but they cannot be seen because of the vest and coat.

9. Doc is wearing his Black square toe (coffin toe) town boots. These are the same boots he wears in the first scene. Doc always wears these boots when he is in town.

So here we have the second outfit Val/Doc wears in the movie. We at Hollywood Western Wardrobe already sell the correct maroon cravat complete with the correct diamond stud tie pin. In the future the vest and pants will be available. The gray town coat can be bought at Historical Emporium.

I hope you enjoyed this little post on Doc's wardrobe and be on the lookout for outfit number three.

Always a colossal task to actually claim one is more favored than his others but I obsess over this one so I put my claim on this one as my favorite. This vest is a masterwork.

I got my striped trousers for this outfit in so I took some quick pics with everything I have so far (pardon the messy hair and room). Still need to hem them since they come with a whopping 36" inseam:

This is a great outfit and you are soooo close to done but ya, the Han Solo hair is going to need to hide with some banana clips up top.

JohnHolliday has one up on all of us with already having the right face shape but you always seem to pull those little details in on the day of the final pics so I am jazzed and waiting.

AMAZING WORK BROTHER!!!!! I have these same pants saved as I was going to try and just make them, but after seeing them on you I think I might so go with these as they look REALLY GOOD with the outfit and they are a match to what Doc wears.

Speaking of that, I these are the same pants he wears when he meets the Earps in Tombstone. I had this listed on my write up but changed it because I have a photo of the pants being a black and white pinstripe, but in truth they are these pants as I also have a photo of them in the movie in which I have posted below. You will have to enlarge the photo to see the stripes.

Oh I'll be cutting it for wearing the full outfit, I have a few cosplays that call for shorter hair so I do get it cut shorter sometimes. But yeah, I'm not blessed with JohnHolliday's facial hair either so I won't be as accurate there, but meh, it'll be my take on him. I might try a fake mustache if I could find one in a close enough color to my real hair but I've worn one before in high school theatre and they're awfully uncomfortable, so I'm hoping to get by well enough without one.

Thanks! Yeah, they're really nice, maybe a little more grey in them relative to the amount of black (they're definitely grey-with-black-stripes rather than a 50/50 black-and-grey stripe) but definitely close enough I think. I have a little extra room in the waist and was initially wondering if I should've gotten the next size down for a slightly slimmer fit in the legs, but comparing to this photo (only full body one I can find of that outfit) I think the fit on mine is pretty close:

I would say you are right on the money brother  If you are looking for a cheap pair of boots that comes really close to Doc's, you can buy pair of motorcycle riding boots on eBay pretty cheap. You will just have to cut off the round steel ring and leather strap. They have the correct coffin shape toe you will want to match Doc's boots. The shaft of the boots really doesn't matter as they will be covered up by your pant legs.

Thank You to Cameron1138 for turning me on to the fabric he used to make the bib for his shirt, as I was able to buy the last two yards the company had. This means we will be able to make a few of these shirts. The fabric Cameron1138 found was better looking and more screen accurate the what I had found.

The fabric cam in yesterday and I have matched up the gray the in the stripe to my fabric swatch to find the matching color. This fabric is now getting ordered so I can finally get this shirt in my collection :)

Thanks again Cameron1138 you really made me a happy this Christmas

Glad I could help! Can't wait to see how your version of this shirt turns out.

Here is my Facebook drop I did this morning on Val's third outfit from the movie. The person I am referring to in the post that is helping me with the vest pattern is our very own Cameron1138

Val's/Doc's Third Outfit from the movie Tombstone

I figured I would leave 2024 with Val's third outfit then in 2025 finish off the rest of Val's wardrobe.

All right gang; this next outfit is a little bit troublesome for me on the time frame as Doc seems to being wearing the same outfit for several different scenes in the movie and from what I take to be at least two different days. I "think" in the movie Doc hasn't been to bed in a while as he has been up all-night gambling and drinking, so this is why he is wearing the same outfit in these different scenes? If you know if I am right or you know the real reason why then please comment below.

I like to call this outfit "The Twirl Outfit" or "The Two Guns Outfit" as this is the outfit Doc wears in the Saloon when he does his famous whiskey cup twirl to Johnny Ringo and it is also the same outfit he wears when he says "I have two guns, one for each of you" to Billy Clanton.
We first see this outfit when Doc, Kate, Wyatt and Mattie enter The Bird Cage Theater to watch the play. After the play Doc and Wyatt head to The Oriental Saloon for some gambling and drinking and this is where Doc has his first run in with Johnny Ringo (the famous cup twirl scene). The next time we see Doc is when he is Playing the piano and has his first run in with Billy Clanton, and after Curly Bill kills Fred White, Doc comes to the rescue of his friend Wyatt and confronts Billy Clanton for their second run in ("I have two guns, one for the each of you" scene). Of course, we all know the third time they have their run in is the last we will see of old Billy
1f609.png

Doc's outfit consist of these items..................

1. Doc's Black Cowboy Hat

2. Doc is wearing the Same Maroon Cravat with the Diamond Stud Tie pin that he was wearing when he met the Earps that day.
Doc is wearing the same Gray and Black diagonal stripped Bib Shirt he was wearing in the very first scene we saw him in when he was playing poker with Ed Bailey.

3. Doc's Black Jacket is also the same one he was wearing in the first scene playing poker. Doc has removed the jacket after the famous twirling of the whiskey cup scene.

4. Doc's Vest is a silver/gray vest which appears be made of Silk/Satin. The vest has a pink and blue tiny flower pattern on the front of the vest. The vest has four pockets (two on top and two on the bottom and five flat silver buttons. The collar on the vest is pretty unique as it is a short shawl collar (rounded) but it has a notch cut into the collar. The back of the vest appears to be a solid silver/gray silk/satin back.

5. Doc's pants again are the same black and gray stripped pants from the poker scene and when he meets the Earps in town.

6. Doc is wearing Suspenders, but they cannot be seen because of the vest and jacket.

7. Doc's boots are once again his black coffin toe Town Boots.

8. Doc is again wearing his Black Shoulder Rig with his Nickel-plated Colt in it, and he also is wearing his Nickel-plated Colt Lightning in his front right hand pant pocket with the butt of the pistol facing his left hand.

9. Doc is wearing his silver-plated pocket watch which appears to hang from his second to the last button on his vest and the watch is tucked into his left front pant pocket. We never get to see what Doc's watch looks like in the movie as it is always in his pocket. In the very first scene of the movie when Doc is playing poker with Ed Bailey, we see a silver pocket watch in the poker ante pile on the table. Is this Doc's watch?? I don't think it is because the chain is different than Doc's, but then again, the world may never know.

10. Doc wears a gold-plated diamond ring on his right hand (this ring will make another appearance in the film) and can this be the same ring seen in the poker game ante?

11. Doc's Tin Whiskey Cup is never far from him when he is in a Saloon. The whiskey cup is about 2 5/8 inches tall and has a small ring handle on one side of the cup. The cup appears to be collapsible, but we never see it in the movie collapsed.

We at Hollywood Western Wardrobe will be making this Silver/Gray vest as of right now I am working with an individual from another website on getting the correct pattern made for this vest. Once we have the pattern then the fabric will get printed. This is going to take place on Doc's three iconic vest (Gold, Red and Gray). Once the fabric has been printed, we will be able to make these vests for everyone who wants one.

Be on the lookout for outfit number four which will be posted here in the very near future.

Dropped this info today on my Facebook page

Val's/Doc's Fourth & Fifth Outfit from the movie Tombstone.

Welcome back to another edition of what Val/Doc wore in the movie Tombstone. In this post I am going to cover outfit number four and number five. I'm throwing in number five as it is just one piece of clothing in a very small scene.

The fourth outfit we see Doc in is when he is back at the poker table hitting it pretty hard as according to Kate, her man can go all day and all night and then some, and apparently this is just what Doc has been doing as Morgan stated that Doc has been at it for 36 hours straight. I call this one the "Loving Man" outfit.

The outfit consists of these pieces of clothing..............

Doc's shirt is a gray and white stripe shirt. The shirt has the stripes running in a vertical pattern on the body of the shirt, but the stripes run in a horizontal pattern on the bib of the shirt. The shirt has two suspender tunnels that the suspender straps run through sewn on each side of the shirt. The shirt buttons from the back and there is a one button closer in the middle of the bib on the front of the shirt and this is held close by a silver ball collar stud. The shirt is a band collar shirt that has a white wing tip collar attached to it in this scene. The cuffs on this shirt are normally held closed by a set off cufflinks, however in this scene Doc has his sleeves rolled up.

Doc's Vest is the same Gold and Black Silk/Satin vest we see Doc wear in the very first scene while playing poker with Ed Bailey.

Doc's Suspenders again cannot be seen during this scene, but odds are they are the ones he wears to the O.K. Corral.

Doc's cravat is up for discussion as it cannot really been seen too well in this scene. I can tell it has a colorful pattern in it showing some white, teal and gold. As for the main body color I would say that it is Black but then again it just can't be seen all that well as the lighting in this scene is pretty weak. Doc seems to have a silver ball stud tie pin in this cravat.

Doc's pants can only be seen for a brief moment when he is carried out of the gambling hall. Odds are these are the dark gray pants that he wears to the O.K. Corral as I will cover these pants when we get to this outfit, as right now I am just guessing what Val is wearing in this scene.

Doc wears his coffin toe town boots during this scene.

Doc is NOT wearing any rings, nor does he have his pocket watch on during this scene. Doc also is NOT wearing his shoulder rig in this scene which I find pretty strange that Doc is gambling without a firearm on him. The only props one could use in this setup is the Doc's drinking cup, Pharo playing cards, clay poker chips and a lot of period correct cash.

Doc's fifth outfit is just a sleeveless white night shirt. This can be seen while Doc is in bed recovering from his 36 hours of gambling. Not a real big outfit in the movie, but none the less, this is the fifth outfit we see Doc wear.

In our quest to make all of Doc's outfits from the movie, we will be leaving out a few non-essential outfits, one being outfit number five. I have not found a fabric I like to match Doc's cravat in outfit number four, but I am always searching for this stuff so you just never know what I will come up with or when I will come up with it.

Be on the lookout for outfit number six .................. ;)

Val's/Doc's Sixth Outfit form the movie Tombstone

I think it's pretty safe to say that Val stole the show in the movie Tombstone thanks to GREAT writing and his portrayal of Doc Holliday. EVERY scene that Val was in was pretty iconic, but if I had to make a list of the top three outfits Val wore in the movie, I would place this outfit at number three. Remember this is just my list as some of you out there might see things differently than I do.
The outfit that I am referring to in this post is the sixth outfit we see Val/Doc in, and this outfit is the Shootout at the O.K. Corral outfit. Val wears ALL GRAY during the shootout, as I read somewhere in my research that someone involved with making the movie went back and brought up all articles in Tombstone Epitaph that stated what Doc was wearing and carrying in this famous gunfight. Everyone thinks that Val is wearing black as the dark charcoal clothing appears to be black in the movie.

The outfit consist of these items...........................

Doc's Famous Black Cowboy hat

Doc's shirt is the same gray and white stripe shirt he was wearing at the poker table the night before. The only difference now is the white wing tip collar has been removed showing the band collar which is closed with a collar stud. The shirt now has the sleeves rolled down and button closed with a pair of cufflinks.

Doc's suspenders/braces are a Y-Back pair of brown suspenders. The suspenders have a black stitching/design on each side of the straps. The suspenders also have a brown leather dog ear loops that secure the suspenders to the black pant buttons. There are two brass adjusters to adjust the suspenders (one on each side). I have talked to MANY companies that make suspenders on what these suspenders are made of, and all of them said they are made of elastic. My thought was they were made of leather, but no one agreed with me on this, so I guess I am going with elastic ones. Just so we are all clear on the suspenders, this is the first and only time we see the suspenders in the movie. Is Doc wearing these suspenders throughout the movie under his vest in other scenes? I have never found the answer on this, so I guess it is up to you on what you want to use in your setups.

Doc's pants are a dark charcoal wool pant that has a very light gray faded stripe. This gray stripe is VERY HARD to see as I really had to enlarge my photos to pick this up. The pants have two frogmouth front pockets and no back pockets, but there is an adjustable strap on the back of the pants. Pants have black buttons to attach the suspenders and a button up fly.

Doc's boots are the same boots he has been wearing throughout the movie which are his black town boots with the coffin toe.

Doc is wearing his Black Shoulder Rig with his 4 3/4-inch Nickel-plated Colt (actually an EMF) tucked into the holster. Doc is also carrying his 4 1/2-inch Nickel-plated Colt Lighting in his front right pocket with the butt of the pistol facing to Doc's left.

Doc covers this entire wardrobe setup with a dark charcoal wool Ulster/Inverness coat. This coat is very long as it comes down to right above Doc's ankles. There is a very long cape attached to this coat and the cape comes to the end of the coat sleeves. There are five frogmouth closures attached to the cape that have black toggle buttons. There is a black circle embroidered piping around each of the closures (five on each side of the cape). There is also a black edging that runs down the front of each side of the coat and the bottom of the cape. Doc does NOT have his arms in the coat sleeves during this scene as he just has the coat over his shoulders to help him make fast exist of the coat when the action starts.

Doc has several props that go along with this outfit besides his shoulder rig and pistols. Doc also has a tall thin silver/pewter flask that has the hinge that is attach to the flask and flask cap. Doc can be seen drinking from this as he meets the Earps. Doc also carries a black walking stick that has silver ball top. Doc is using this walking stick has he crosses the street to meet the Earps. Doc trades this walking stick to Virgil Earp for his Double Barrel 10-gauge shotgun. This shotgun has two exposed hammers, a stock that has a small, rounded pistol grip incorporated into it. The shotgun appears to have a 20-inch barrel which helps Doc conceal it under his coat as he walks to the shootout. Doc also wears a pair of silver cufflinks that are round and appear to have a dark gray round center. Doc's collar stud looks just like the cufflinks.

So, there you have it, the outfit that Val/Doc wears during this famous scene. Be sure to keep following this page as outfit number seven will be coming soon

John Holliday 1-11-25

PS. Here is a bit of Triva for all you fans out there, on the movie poster for the movie Doc and Virgil are both carrying double barrel shotguns when in reality Virgil should be carrying Doc's Walking stick

Thank you for your posts. There is always something to learn. I really enjoy seeing these props brought back to life. I have spent decades looking off and on for things before I realized many of the costumes were made. Peter's book does a good job of documenting what happened.

I laugh each time I find myself in a thrift store looking for passable Doc drinking bits. I am a teetotaller from birth so me looking for drinking kit cracks me up.

We go to Tombstone every Labor day Weekend and last year they had cups that are pretty dang close. I have several authentic period ones that aren't perfect. One of the harder bits to find really. Actually got married down there last year. She has made all of her dresses bustle and all.
