Tom Clancy's The Division - Agent Costume

Hi guys,
With The Division in beta this past weekend, and coming out in a month (can't wait), I thought I'd post some pictures and info about my costume.

• I designed my costume to look like the main character in the gameplay and cinematic trailers. At the time, that was really all we had seen, and all we had to go on.
• This costume was completed last year. I'll be wearing it to Denver ComicCon this year (2016) on at least one day, and by then bringing a whole squad of Agents with me. ;-)
• I designed the "shoulder beacon" myself (that's what I call it anyways). I shared the 3D printing files on Thingiverse, so that other Agents can make their own. It has lights and animations (which, now having played the beta, is actually more "full featured" than the real in-game one, haha).

• I'm working on a watch too, though at this point I'm a bit curious to see what the watch looks like that comes with my Collector's Edition. There is a smaller NeoPixel LED ring than I used in the shoulder beacon that would fit well in the watch. I really like the bright, animated, LEDs... more flair.
• We drew up the patches ourselves, using Ubisoft's site, and I had a friend with an embroidery machine make them for me. They came out awesome.
• I can find that many of the items carried/worn by the characters are real, and were easy to acquire. Anybody know what the backpack is?
• The Dark Zone loot bag (yellow "sleeping bag" looking thing) is made from PVC coated fabric, like a waterproof bag would be made from. It gives it a really authentic look and feel.

Amazing job, especially with the comms unit!

I wish I knew more about electronics so I could piece together one of the neopixel LED rings for mine (barely managed to get the friggin' EL wire to work XD ).

Also, after looking at this, I'm thinking of altering the way I use LEDs in the watch to create a "ring" look closer to the one in the game similar to what you mention (I have one of the collector watches already, and it's awesome! Would love it if the ring would stay lit, though).

While you would need some electronics and programming skills to come up with the NeoPixel ring setup on your own, in this case it is available as a kit, and Adafruit has full tutorials on the whole process (e.g. soldering, programming including example code, etc.). So anyone thinking they might want to do it should be confident that they can, for the cost of a soldering iron and a USB cable.

I'm curious, how do you have the collector watch ALREADY? I'm going to use mine to take measurements and design a 3D printed watch that can house the smaller NeoPixel ring. I'm not sure the batteries will fit in the watch, but I might be able to hide them on my forearm or something.

On a side note, I always make any effects on my costumes overly bold. For example, super bright lights, extra large chain mail, big carbon fiber weave, etc. It makes it stand out more from a distance, such as on a stage or from across an outdoor courtyard in bright light.

As one of the first cosplayers for the game and getting in contact with the developers a couple years back before starting work on a fan-made webseries, I kinda got on their radar.

Which totally caught me off guard, as the Agent cosplay is actually my first.

So, they gave a bunch of people in the fan community some swag during E3 2015. I just got lucky that later down the line I was able to get one of the watches (though I'll still get another with the Sleeper Agent Edition ).

And yeah, I totally see the need to go bold. The EL wire in my comms unit and LEDs in the watch I made aren't nearly as bright as they should be for daylight; they look nice in dim or dark light, but walking around a convention floor you'd never know they were turned on.

Thanks for the extra info about Adafruit! I have a friend who's a programmer by profession and he's been getting into arduinos and such, so I might get a kit and have him help me out with things a bit.

If you're using the NeoPixel ring and Adafruit Trinket, I have the code file posted right in the Thingiverse thing. So the work is already done for you, unless you want it to do something else.

I'll post this here too, in case people are looking for patches...For my shoulder patch (SHD logo), I made an Illustrator design for it and had Jared at Briarwood Makery embroider it for me. I also just finished a new version of the shoulder beacon. It adds 1/2" to the length (as many people suggested), and I added a bunch of details (e.g. texture on the back, buttons on the left side, screw holes for socket head cap screws on the top, etc.). I've just finished 3D printing it on a commercial grade printer and it looks AWESOME. I'm going to cast some. Stay tuned.

I actually know a ton about PVC patches, because of my day job, and my side-business I own. You likely won't be able to get them cheaper than a few hundred dollars minimum, for around 100 patches minimum. The last batch I ordered was $500 for 100, for a patch that was like 2.5"x3", with 3 colors.

The reason they are so expensive is because they have to have a mold made. So the first $100-300 is just paying for the mold. The patches are then only like $2-3 each. I've gotten good results from Sienna Pacific / Linx Co.: http://www.linxcorp.us/

Just a note... pretty much all PVC patches are made in China (which also means that it takes a few weeks minimum to get here). There are probably others, but the only company I know of in the USA that makes them is Flex Systems: http://www.flexsystems.com/ Their quotes typically come in about 2x as much as the Chinese patches, but hey, Made In The USA.

I'd buy a few, if you got an order of them.

These parts should require far less sanding and finishing. I plan to make molds of these, so that I can cast several, easily. I'll also be uploading them to Thingiverse, like the previous generations, for those with the capability to make them themselves.

Are you talking about the patches (that's what you quoted) or the beacons? You can buy the patches from those links. As for the beacons, no. Each beacon is maybe $50-100 in parts, and several hours of work. So I'm guessing you wouldn't want to pay $400 for a beacon, in order to compensate for my time, when you could do it with a little sandpaper and spray paint yourself. (Maybe I'm wrong, and you would just want to pay for it. However, the answer would still have to be no, as I don't have enough time to do my awesome projects, and make awesome things for other people too. )

These really are easy to build, skill wise. You can do it!

Your cosplay and beacon design is awesome! Need to find someone with a 3D printer so I can print out a beacon.

In case you might be interested, I made a watch face using Ubisoft's design for android wear. It's an alternative to the collectors watch.

I just printed it at work (with permission). It's printed on an Objet 350 printer. (I'm a mechatronic prototyping engineer, so this is actually what I do all day).

Don't feel you need to print it out on that high a quality printer. If you print it on a hobbyist grade printer, you'll just need to do some more sanding.
