Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Costumes

I made a mad hatter style top hat based off the movie completely from duck tape and as soon as i find the photo i will post it and let you see it the hat has since been sat on so it no longer retains its original shape

I'm not 100% happy with what I'm using for the under-suit-- but it's one of those it'll do, after halloween, it's another story, and I can go for more accurate. Its essentially leggings and a stretchy top.

The undersuit is relatively simple if you have some sewing abilities. I just used the Kwik Sew one piece "cat suit" pattern and a stretchy fabric that has silver squares on it that I got from fabric.com. In it's original state it's far too much of a disco ball but it's easy enough once you sew it all together to give it a light coat of spray paint to dull it down and to cover the black backing. It didn't change the stretch at all and it doesn't flake or crack. Make sure you do it really thin though. And then it's hand wash and hang to dry only after that.

Good luck with your build!

Great idea-- I currently am using this fabric thats black base with silver circles printed on it in a legging and long sleeve shirt... I actually bought some silver spray paint to mist over it, I'm glad to hear it worked for ya.

What did you use for your skirt? I'm gonna end up using cheapy chain laced with leather strips and some beads for weighing it down a bit. I'm despirately trying to source a belly dancer belt skirt thing to make it a bit easier...

I came home from school and found my mom had extended the sleeves of my shirt I'm using and added the lace. :D She also suprised me and made a quick mock up of the gloves. Very cool, LOL.

Still need to do a few things on mine. Didn't fit the sleeves before sewing them and now need to make them wider to fit my arms. Pockets lining and buttons and it's done. Vest needs collar and pockets and that is done. Picked up the black tophat from Hot Topic as a backup if I run out of time making the hat from leather. Want to do the gold embroidery but may not have time to do so and just may skip that part this time round and just put it together.

Bought the licensed hatpins. VERY happy with them. They're a tad smaller than I thought they'd be and the crystal is purple not blue but overall for the price I am very happy. Styled the wig but plan to stiffen it up even more so it lasts the evening.

This costume is a bare bones budget and spent very little money on it. I'll have a breakdown of what I spent later but I really skimped on the financing on this one.
OH, and am waiting for my bird patch from a certain place in Singapore. Should be here any day now.

Well, I was having a dickens of a time with the breastplate yesterday... But I'm learning that if I chill out a bit and sleep on things, sometimes a solution will come to me.

Wonderflex is great stuff to work with. Warm, it has the consistency of a wet noodle, it accepts darts well, which was great for the bust area. Now, I need to install a godet for the waist/hip juncture as I kinda designed it oddly.

I have a plan to line the interior of this thing with craft foam, and to do a second layer of wonderflex for stability. I'm then gonna spackle the whole thing with bondo, then do the finishing smoothing and decoration. (unless I lose my bondo nerve, and choose instead to go over it with joint compound... Either way, I need to smooth something over it to hide my structural elements.)

Shoot, bondo gets hot when curing... Will the heat cause the wonderflex base to deform?? Now, I have to experiment on something small. I have a double layered spaulder that needs some finishing love. :)

Wish me luck!

Duh! I don't need a godet, I need to toss s fauld-esque shape onto the bottom to make the flare.

Ever notice a couple hours sleep makes what was impossible the night before Seem entirely doable?

This thing'll really need some finishing compound to hide all my seams though... But nothing too serious.

Just got back from a Halloween party I was invited to...And all the kids decides I was cool enough to get first place in the costume contest. :D

very nice jodo. actually got the same coat! not the same jacket in the pic! what makeup did you use?

and for everyone else..whats everyones favorite make-up get-up?

Thanks mate!

my makeup is my cheap white rubies kind I also use for the Joker (it's like $2-$3) and the other colors are from a pallete from Claire's. :lol My sister has one, and when I saw the colors, I made her go into a mall and get me on too. :lol :lol :lol

And my lips....Well...those are my lips. I didn't use any stain or anything on them. I might next time, but I think they look just fine. Do you guys?

HAHHA

this is actually the exact same makeup we used! I think our colour palette was from ardenes but... pretty much the same store. just canadian owned.

It makes me so irritated when people get all worked up about others using Rubies' makeup... it is CHEAP and it is NOT BAD if you apply it right! Just takes skillz I guess. :lol I always do a powder top coat to even it out and help it dry a bit softer. I don't know if it actually does this... but I feel it does, so I do it. LOL

Anyways, looks great!!!! Too bad about the contacts! But the magic of photoshop is always a wonderful alternative!

Thanks!!!!

LOL! Great minds think alike! :D

I like rubies stuff, but it's probably even better with the powder coat. I don't have any setting powder or anything I use. I'd deffintly like to try it out sometime. :D

I don't have any setting powder either. I used baby powder on Travis. hhahaha! I save my pennies wherever I can. XD

I know the flower pattern on the scarf has been discussed before, but after rereading those posts and rewatching the movie just for the hat scenes, I'm more confused than ever. Is the pattern on both sides of the scarf or just the frayed side? If it's both sides, is the pattern the same? :confused Thanks- this has been giving me a headache.

And Jodo- you make a great Hatter. The makeup looks really good, too. :)

That's the same palette I'm using too! Seems to be a popular choice, but it does have the EXACT colors in it, so it works well. I'm using Mehron clown white since I have a good amount left from my Joker costume days. It always makes my skin nice and soft after wearing it awhile, so that's an added bonus. I also give a light dusting with baby powder too just to give the make-up a good 'set'.

I can't wear contacts either Jodo, so you're not the only one who has to go without, however, the natural color of my eyes works just perfect so I'm not too sour about it!

Based on some of the photos I have seen it looks like the flowers are on the entire scarf. I am putting mine on the frayed side though.

Here are a couple to see it on both ends

The other you can see it towards the back of his hat which tells me there may be more stitching than on just the ends.
