Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Costumes

To which ribbon are you referring too? The ones attached to the safety pin? If yes I am just leaving it as is so that if it does fray it adds to the realism of the Hatter wearing out his clothing.

If no I am sorry but I am confused! :confused

Just a heads up that I hear AMC theatres is planning a boycott as well and others may follow suit.

Everyone is welcome to come join me in Canada where it's going to be shown everywhere! :lol

I'm still working on the aging of the coat. There is fluff everywhere, my hands are covered in glue and...well...actually there's glue everywhere too. I shook the bottle downward to get it to move ( it's REALLY thick...fabric glue. ) and the cap came off and it globbed all over my Pirates throw, desk, pants, hands...I can't say enough times that this costume is actually going to be the cause of my descent into madness...

Oh, and no one answered! What is everyone doing, or how is the edging of the ribbon finished? Serged? Hemmed? Just a single stitched line to prevent fraying?

Whoops. I meant the hat band. I have no idea why I said ribbon instead. XD Sorry!

Yeah, I just bought the ribbon for the safety pin and am also leaving it. :)

My temporary one is serged...surged.....and I will roll the edge and sew.

At least that is what I was told to do! Now let's see if I can REALLY do it!!:confused

By the way the Simplicity sewing machine has landed. It is specific for quilting so I have no idea what types of material can be used to sew. Thin leather?

Back off derailment!

Hmmm. Thanks!

Re: the sewing machine, I have no knowledge of them other than how to use one for the basics. I just sew what I want...if it REALLY doesnt sew it right, then I figure it can't sew that material. Probably not the best way to go about it... >_> I think you can sew thin leather as long as you have the proper needle for it...another thing that I learn by trial and error...usually resulting in several broken needles... :lol

Richard you're such a Ham for the Camera mate!!!:lol Congrats and good for you guys! So any spoilers we need to know about?

Buttons buttons buttons! for the coat that is!

I have had no luck finding something that resembles the buttons that go down the front. I found ones that are identical but the largest size is 1". These buttons appear to be at least 1 1/2 to 1 3/8 inches. No time to special order so I may have to go the Sculpey III route!!!:angry

I rummaged through a box of spares, painted a couple white ones for the red/white. There's a few of the red/white ones but other than that I don't think that any of the others actually match. They do on the exhibit costume, but not in the movie.

- Each one going down the front is different
- each cuff has 1 red/white one. The right cuff has an engraved gold one, the left cuff has a green or gold one
-...and the back above the splits one is red/white and the other is either green or gold again.

Hey just a random question...

With all of the incredibly negative 'reviews' going on around the internets, how many of you are nervous to wear your costume and that the movie will be a flop? Will you continue to wear them to events if you dislike it? Just wondering...myself, I have no worries. It's exactly the kind of movie I enjoy. :)

Hey padawan...
yup thats the stuff it does have what looks kinda like stretchmarks.

as for the hat..
ya.. i can almost guarantee the original has this same slits
because its really the only way to make the leather stretch
over the block and not have wrinkles.ive been working with leather
for 7 years now shaping it was still abit out of my
comfort zone.
so those patches are out of necessity not decorative choice.
the stitching is half machine and other half by hand.
and yes thimbles help immensely.

I KNEW IT!!!!
i got to know how you aged it cause it looks so perfect
and im kind of afraid to cause i used the whole bolt on the coat and the hat already and i dont know if Walmart will ever get it again. so i dont really have room to mess up

and those Pictures with Colleen are priceless
she looks like she wants to drop kick your Red Queen XP

heheh
you still have Chads hat scarf
that makes me happy ^^

oh and i might have asked you thins on MySpace
but where can we find the Red Queen over dress stuff
a friend of mine wants to know

FYI

just picked up the AIW visual guide at barnes and
noble and it's pretty much worthless as far as helping
us out with new angles of anything.
They even show incorrect heart shaped glasses
for the red queen . Obviously whomever put the book
together was not much of a fan.
What a bummer.

Hey Charles
aren't we all pretty much all hams for the camera.:)
all I know is that I wasn't chasing down the cameras
they truly sought us out.
Fans thought we where Disney employees.

Peace out,
ACME

Padawan, that vest looks fantastic! :D

Hey, what about the saftly pin guys? Any idea on it's length/a scource? The largest I've seen has been 4 inches I beleive.

*insert more dirty jokes here*

yeah mines like a 9 inches XP

in all seriousness
my safety pin is 5 inches, i got it on San Clemente Island and have had it for about 4 years
it was only like a buck
but i dont know where to find another

id say 4 inches would be good
i know In-An-Out sells the ones they use for there aprons
there the same 5 inch kind like mine
but they say In-An-Out on them
but you'll never see that cause it will be facing the coat

that's probably your best bet right there

my coat is evolving! muahhahaa!

a million hours later, and after glue has been spilled everywhere and its still a work in progress. D=

FF to 3:26 to see the Hatter throw a fit in an apron! XD

your coat is Lovely
i just started doing the piping on mine
so far it looks good, i need to know how to age the fabric though
i really want to know what Acme did cause his looks loverly

and thanks to this clip we know know that that stripey thing is an apron and the back of his vest is in fact the checkered stuff
or atleast that its a huge possibility that that's what it is

Thanks! Here's another amazing fabulous picture with the wig, ribbons, hat, patch ( i know...stinky Singapore one...just can't afford ACME's atm... hopefully soon!), I added some awe-inspiring photoshop effects for added impressiveness. ;) rofl

For the aging, I smeared glue all over it for the dark spots. Appropriate for a hatter, I think. LOL The fuzzy patches are shredded felt glued and ironed down in a couple different tones. I've never aged anything before and I've probably gone about it in the most time consuming way, but it's looking good!!

And actually, I'm pretty sure the back of his vest is striped. Goodness knows why. You can see a SMIDGEN of it in the " too tall or too small " scene from the last featurette.

...and no. I really don't have anything better to do with my life atm than investigate all things Alice. @_@

dont worry neither do i
i dont have any money in fact to keep doing this, but i still just dont stop

im defiantly going to to the felt thing like you did
but i dont think the fabric will react the same way to glue as yours did
i want to know from Acme cause we used the same stuff
i think even Toby used what we did, but he hasn't been on for a while

and dont worry about the cheapy bird im sure a lot of us are using it
i want to get Acmes but i again have no money
in fact im in the negatives (please buy something from me)

and did yu fix the wig, or does it still look to small when worn?

MUAHAHA! I Fixed it! It took a lot of extensive surgery but I think it's a LOT better now. I just filled in the bottom half some more, I still have to re-curl those pieces ( you can see a lot on the right side are just sticking out straight ) but they'll be nice and wirey, lengthy pieces when they're done. :) I really think I overreacted in the first place, since the collar will be so high around the neck, no ones reeeeaaally going to notice the length of the bottom half of it. But it looks better now, regardless. :)

Pretty sure Toby didn't use what you guys had...unless what you have is dark solid brown to begin with...I've only seen pictures of ACMEs and it doesn't seem that way, though I may be wrong. I saw a few pics of Tobys in the works on Twitter and it indeed started out as a solid dark brown. I expect he went all out and then some on the aging that makes it look lighter than original. :lol

If you're using fabric glue...theoretically...it SHOULD stick. It was HORRIBLE for me because I used a satin and it just absorbed the glue everytime I brushed it on for the felt...and then the felt ended up sticking to my fingers when I tried to apply it. It was a nasty mess. But looks good now so it was worth it!

Are you planning on wearing your costume on opening day? You seem like you've got a lot to do in a little amount of time! @_@

Personaly...I think it would be weird to wear it opening day. I don't know enough about the character yet to know what would be appropriate or not. Although I have a very good idea how to play the character, I'd like to see what and how he reacts to things in the movie.

It's actualy sorta funny, because a few years ago my friend who is into acting was cast as Alice, and she told me I should come and sign up for that play. I told her the only way I'd be in that play would be if I could play the Mad Hatter. :lol I ended up not signing up either way, but I also figured it was an omen to do this costume now. :lol

The stripped apron must be that thing from that one image a while back. I remember someone saying prison outfit. Just a cooking apron. lol.

Oh, and fantastic progress aelynn

i love wearing costumes for the opening night
its like a Pre-Mind blow for ever one else about to watch it, and then when you leave and see everyone whos about to watch it
for them its like
"HOLY CRAP!! DID THE HATTER WALK RIGHT OFF THE SCREEN?!?!?"

I did that fpr pirates 2 and 3 and people fliped

Except I think we may be asked to remove our hats!

People hated me when I showed up for a showing of Dead Man's Chest and had on my Cannibal crown! Two feet tall! A woman behind me asked, "Your not going to wear that through the entire movie are you?" I responded with a "Yes" just to make her wiggle. Just after the organist finished his playing at the El Cap I took it off. She was happy!!:loveI mean!:love
