Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Costumes

Thanks for the tips!

I think your dress is lovely and it photographs beautiful :)

I actually have a dozen (I think) of the exact button-someone on LJ was ordering a gross and I got 12 or 14-can't remember? I think I got 12, but after going to FIDM maybe I need 14? Maybe that's it?
Are the Joann's buttons the same size as the exact buttons?
Remember who the brand is?
:)

I've been planning and sketching the dress for months now, and it keeps getting pushed back on the construction list. The ricrac skirt (that isn't even seen in the film) and the rabbit hole dress were meant to be made for the film opening, and neither happened.

I've found a sky blue, a baby blue, and a royal blue-but no dusty blue.
I've debated making it in a sky blue (kind of the traditional Alice color) since I've found a sheer to match for the skirt overlay and sleeves, but before going that route wondered if anyone here had found a perfect match to dye anywhere :)

Yes please share the pattern number once you find it :)
And I'll take a look at those petticoat links now!

BTW-Cassidy's dress is the perfect color-was hers a fabric find or a dye?

Skarlett, I've yet to start mine but I bought a bajillion metres of an amazing dusty blue chiffon! ... even though I'm not sure it'll be enough for myself just yet...but I can see if the fabric store has any left...they're having a MASSIVE sale right now!

Check the Alice gallery on my profile...it's the same material as my teacup dress. In some pics it's very pale blue, with some flash it's more blue...pretty much like the dress on exhibit everywhere. :)

Let me know if you're interested and I'll see what I can do!

I'd love to know if they still have any in stock!

I'm planning another trip to FIDM to see the dress up close again, and then an afternoon in the fabric district to look for more Um sheer, and to see whats available from the various vendors.

I'm toying with the idea of buying some chiffon that's in the light blue family, and dyeing it using RIT's Royal Blue to see how that comes out.

Aye aye! I'll be going this week so I'll see what's left of it. There are a few of the same store around here though so if it's really cheap ( which it should be...it was a spring fabric and was $15/m regular and the spring stuff is supposed to be 75% off right now! ) I'll just buy a whole whack of it. If you want some, we can go from there, if not...I'll just have a lot of extra for a billion Alice dresses. o_O Or sell it on ebay or something. :)

BUT!

Can you keep an eye out for some white striped sheer while you're doing your fabric shopping too? If you find any, can you let me know and maybe we can set up a trade? :D I'm being SO picky but I also can't find anything similar here...I really lucked out with the dusty blue chiffon.

Absolutely!
Part of the reason to go to the fabric district is just to see what it out that may work for Um.
I've gotten several PMs asking where the fabric can be found, so it's a research trip for all those making Um in the future :)

I need that frilly red stuff that lines the lapels on the brown coat!!! Where do I get them? JoAnn's by me doesn't have any!!! Can someone hook it up with the info please?!?!?

that stuff doesn't exist
you need to make it and there are a ton of was to do it....unfortunately there all a b,i,t,c,h

for mine i used woven ribbon layered it like 4 times and pulled it apart,
it looks great only you will need a bloody TON of ribbon
and it takes for ever and is a crazy mess

then you can always use the edge of fabric, you know, the salvage
I wanted to use Poplin for my coat but didn't have enough, see as beautiful and perfect as it looks, you will need a TON i cut the salvage off of 6 yards of dark red poplin and i still didn't have enough. so as perfect as that is it ends up with you spending a ton of money on a ton of fabric you dont really need
im doing this on the new coat im making now

then there is just plain top stitching the whole coat. where insted of putting wrong sides together and turning it right side out you just put one on top of the other and stitch(now this only works on fabric that frays like silk)
I did this to my blue coat which i made from Dupioni silk.
this looks really good but be careful
stuff like silk pulls apart real easy, so you want to fray check every single stitch
and it may help to layer the silk one or 2 times to give it something to hold onto better.
this can also be a tad messy cause the first few times you wear it youll be leaving threads everywhere you go

other people have used things like chenille yarn and angle hair yarn or even corded piping
which all work pretty well
i topped my cuff swerls with this red yarn stuff and it looks really good so i can understand people use it for the whole coat

i hope ive said something useful ^^

Just for my own curiosity, what shade of blue Dupioni Silk did you get? I ordered a sample of aquamarine from an online retailer and LOVE the color myself. It's more screen accurate than the production and display phots I've found, but I LOVE IT! It almost has this peacock quality under the light.

i dont know, i tryed to match the silk to what the display coat looked like under a flash (so i had to go around with my camera) but its just like a blue, i dont really know the shade

Another shoe question from me :)
I've just purchased white Victorian boots on eBay for my rabbit hole dress.
They are not leather-
in the past I have spray painted non-leather shoes to make them the right color for costumes, but does anyone have any other ideas for painting the toes black?
If they were leather I'd strip the white and re-paint with Tandy leather dye, but as they are not, I'm curious what others have done to change shoe colors?

For the accessory pieces like hats, wigs, scarves, etc. try the costuming company Alex in Wonderland. They're contracted with theme parks like Disney and Six Flags for their costumed characters and the pieces are usually pitch-perfect! However, they don't run cheap. The upside is that they're remarkably durable!

...um...kay

ANYWAY
now with Comic-con over youd think id take a little break from costuming
.......yeah, screw that

heres a sneak peak at the new project ^^

thats the one^^

silk poly blend
in the most perfect burgundy too
on sale for 3 bucks a yard
so i bought the whole roll XP
(the camera bleached it out, its alot darker in person)

I THIIIIINK I found some good striped sheer for Um! FINALLY!!!! I ordered it online and will report back when it arrives! ...now to work on the rest of the dress... >_>

I'm having a hard time finding a gem large enough for the hat pin. Any leads you guys? Plus, are you doing blue as in the promo shots, or purple like in the EXPENSIVE Visual Companion??

i have done blue for a while
mainly cause i was able to find able beads in the right shape and size
and now i have a few hatpins i need to sell

but i want to transfer to purple personally
the trick is finding them you know.
