Thundercats Sword of Omens build (6/10 - first pull - w. images pg.9)

Re: Thundercats Sword of Omens build

Don't know if much is happening with this, the last info we got was in June :( Fingers are still crossed it doesn't slip away.

Re: Thundercats Sword of Omens build (updated 8-20, about stinkin' time ^^; )

Nice Model. Looks good from this angle.

I recently got back to working in 3D and Luxology Modo, and when I saw the absolutely horrible quality of exisiting 3D renders available of the sword of omens I started working on my own version.

I only just now stumbled upon both this forum and this particular project, finally a version with exellent detail and craftmanship!

At any rate, here is a simple screendump in open gl and preview render mode, as you can see I have also started on the original sword pedestal used in the pilot episode. A quite nice touch as artwork of that pedestal is almost impossible to find!

Re: Thundercats Sword of Omens build

wow yeahhhh. this keeps hopping up. Rather embarassing that I haven't had anythign to report for so long.

But yeah guys, been locked up with other commission work, but this is finally back on the bench this coming week.

Re: Thundercats Sword of Omens build

typecase- yeah >< as mentioned before, rather embarassing.

Okay, time for some photos!

Before getting this thing back up and running, I did some puttying and touching up, because this was floating around the house & shop, and caught some nicks and the like. Also wanted to fix and replace the bits that were really bugging me.

I was really annoyed with the hooks, so I'm remaking them with a taper more consistent with the images Omicron posted a jillion years ago in this thread XD

I aim to finish them off today :)

I sculpted the spade shaped bits using super sculpey, and baked it using the heat gun set on low, making sure it didn't get too hot and melt & pucker the styrene bits that were used for the details. I also fixed the slight twisting that was present earlier on the handle.

Had to grind down the edges of the hooks and retexture them before adding the styrene. Sandpaper+ dremel bit=sanded down dremel bit..

Much happier with how the hooks sit now., and i think the angles are much better :)

Also, please excuse if some images show up as bad links. I'm in the process of changing my domain name to something thats easier to spell, and will do my best to repair them once things propogatte to the ew domain!

Re: Thundercats Sword of Omens build (1-26 update w. images pg.8)

Absolutely awesome! Can't wait to see one finished.

Re: Thundercats Sword of Omens build (1-26 update w. images pg.8)

URGGGG, so Michaels no longer sells the tear drop gems with the metal settings on them. I'll have to mold and cast a bunch of them, and cut them down to fit into the recesses I'll have to add. booooooo...

This evening/tomorrow morning, I'll be laying out the bit that goes on the pommel. Unfortunately, the first one was set incorrectly, and I had lost it after pulling it off.

Will use laser cutter to aid in placement though, so that won't happen again :)

"Sword of Omens, come to my hand!".

The sword looks awesome!

Here's some clearer images of the sword stand from the pilot episode, mentioned a few pages back. I think this design is cooler than the more simple one used throughout the rest of the series.

Re: Thundercats Sword of Omens build (1-26 update w. images pg.8)

booshman- Looks liek M.C.Escher had a hand in that one :lol

Remaking the butt of the pommel! Besides losing the first one, I wasn't happy with the shape. Decided to laser cut layers to use as guides for the sculpting.
pommel4.jpg

the layers that made up the flower were stacked and glued together, using the hole i cut into the middles that I ran a pin through to line them up. The peachish color is Super Sculpey, which I used to build up the flower.

Once it was sculpted, baked, and sanded to the shape I wanted, I bevelled the next bit of the stack and glued it on,

the stack was glued to the end, and I'll be engraving the recess for the gem on the bottom.

Still trying to find the teardrop brads I was using for the handle, but they've gone missing and I can't find any online of at craft stores (discontinued D: ). Most likely put them in a spot where they wouldn't get lost, then forgot the spot :lol
