your molds look like some sort of desert
great updates

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I'm really curious to see how your shoe setup works, I don't think I've ever seen a hinged hard shoe be completed and worn before.

The way I'm leaning now is to build in a wedge that's tall enough that the wearer's toe won't really be in the character's toe at all. It'll just be there for looks. That way I don't have to do quite as much figuring out.

I haven't made nearly as much progress as I'd hoped in the past couple of days. I did manage to put a big dent in workshop cleanup. Along the way I tried on some parts again:

This morning I decided I need to re-do the thighs in a slightly larger scale. They're just a bit too snug and I can't get them to sit straight.

In other news, I've started experimenting with LEDs:

So that's a thing...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

After way too much time spent looking over my "Iron Morgan" portrait up there, I've decided that the thighs are, in fact, too small.

So I had Lopez whittle me out a larger one last night:

Then I set him up to carve the right thigh while I assembled the left one. Here it is next to the molded and cast original size:

And laid out autopsy style:

While all of that was going on, Jarvis made me a new unibeam, larger palm repulsors, and a pair of boot pivots:

When I get back to the workshop, Lopez should have the new right thigh all whittled out and I can get to work making both thighs smooth.

Stay tuned...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Yeah I'd say that's a more roomy and comfortable size. You'll get more movement with that while it retains the slim lines of the last piece. Had many scale issues with my old mark 3 until I got my last pieces from Finheads own build. Lovely work as always Sean. Love this thread! You've made great progress and in a short amount of time. It's going to be stunning when complete.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Amazing work as always. Also, do you plan to do a two part joint on between the thigh and shin pieces? My build I made the mistake of using just one pivot point, which puts lots of stress on the joints and restricts movement further. Fantastic work anyway, look forward to the electronics :)

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I bet all the small parts would fit me 8) guess you have size options now

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

aaaaahhhh !! i'm glad to see that your thights are too small !!

WHY ? because that proove you are not god mouahahah just human with too much talent ><

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

do you plan to do a two part joint on between the thigh and shin pieces?

The knee joint will work just like the elbow joint. The shin won't actually be attached in any rigid way to the thigh. There will be the small parts below the knee that slip into the thighs, but that will be all. That way the thin will be free to slide up and down if needed when the knee is bent.

guess you have size options now

Not so much. I've got molds for a pair of slightly-too-small thighs and a prototype for an undersized left hand and an undersized faceplate. I had the whole helmet, but the resin for the 3D printer doesn't have very good memory and it has warped significantly under its own weight.

...you are not god...

Alas.

UPDATE:

Late last week I handed off the molds for all of the open parts and the larger parts to a guy I know who lays up fiberglass parts for a living. Last night he stopped by with a box:

The contents? A whole bunch of gelcoated, lightweight, surprisingly strong pieces of the armor:

I could've laid up the parts myself, but this guy does a much better job in much less time. Now all I've got to do is trim up the edges, do some quick sanding and touchup, and start shooting paint.

On that subject, I stopped by my local automotive paint supplier last night and had them mix me up some colors. The production suit was supposedly painted with a color called "Nissan Merlot Red." When I talked to the service writer at the local Nissan dealership, he was able to give me the paint code for it. It's "AX5" for those of you following along at home. There's also some discussion that it might have been a color called "Roma Red" or "Red Mica" which were a much lighter shade. The color chips for the Merlot Red showed a very dark, purplish tint. So in the interest of experimentation, I had them mix me up a half pint of each. I'll shoot them both and see which one I like better in various lighting.

The gold was a color called "Pacific Gold" from DuPont's Hot Hues line. Unfortunately, my paint guy says they don't make it anymore. But he did have the book of color chips to compare, so I did some flipping through their yellow-saturated gold metallics and compared them against the Pacific Gold chip. I think I found a pretty good match:

I'm priming things today, but tomorrow this thread should be much more colorful. Stay tuned...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Ohohoho, this is very very exciting now. CAN NOT wait to see what happens next.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I think that I will go to bed now so tomorrow can get here sooner. Not sure how I will be able to get any sleep with all this anticipation though...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Here is the AX5 in sunlight

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I scrolled down and then reflexively shouted a bunch of words that would just show up as asterisks here.
That looks phenomenal.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Yeah, ya know...not bad...

(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Hiker :eek

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

By far, this is one of the best build I've seen! :thumbsup GREAT JOB Man!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Just to be clear, that isn't Shawn's build with the AX5 above, I just wanted to show an example of the color :thumbsup

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Kevin, the Merlot Red still feels wrong, but looking through my references it's definitely the right color. In all of the "Hall of Armor" pics from SDCC, it's clear that the Mk3 is much darker than the subsequent red and gold suits. That must be why it looks a bit off by itself.

In other news, I've assembled both of the new thigh prototypes. Here's the right thigh parts when Lopez was done cutting them out:

Then in mid-assembly:

I forgot to snap a picture of the MDF parts once they were all together while I was patching over the seams, but here's the pair all together and primed:

Today I need to do a bit more bodyshop work in order to get them ready for paint and molding. Since they're fairly big pieces I'll probably set them up to be laid up in fiberglass as well. This is shaping up to be a very lightweight suit.

Stay tuned.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

AAAAGH! Its slowly coming together more and more! Too much awesome!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

It is definitely darker than you would expect, especially in low light. I've grown to love it though!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Oh man visiting this thread on a regular basis has now become my habit. Why you so awesome.
