To me, his character arc was understandable and handled as well any two hour movie that has to deliver on a deep mythical story as well as a showdown between good and evil. He went from being a hot head who considered perceived strength and reputation first and foremost to considering the safety of others, wisdom and sacrifice foremost and he did so, not just by accepting his own flaws but understanding the needs of others and he got to that point not just by being sent to earth, away from his friends and stripped of his powers, but by realizing his brother's duplicity, his father's disappointment and vision and the needs of the less powerful he was surrounded by. You want to talk lack of character arc, let's discuss J.J. Abram's Kirk. I get that one. I think this character arc was satisfying.

Loved the production design, was Kirby come alive for me. Especially the skies in Asgard. Makes me want to see the Negative Zone and Annihilus.

And Natalie somehow seems even more beautiful in this, if that is in fact possible.

Both of these right here. It surely felt like a Thor book to me. Did anyone catch the thanks to Simonson in there as well? His was the Thor art style I grew up with.

Did anyone catch the thanks to Simonson in there as well? His was the Thor art style I grew up with.

Not just a thanks, but he's in the banquet scene at the end for a good couple seconds. I was so happy.

I can see people having issues with the fact he realized the error of his ways and changed, seemingly, in a second. However, it does happen. It doesn't always take time and multiple stages to get there. Film-wise maybe it makes things better (not being that quick), I don't know. Thing is, he figured he'd get his power back by getting the hammer and was his gung-ho cocky self and then couldn't lift the hammer and was devasted. He realized he wasn't who he was/thought he was. Then Loki lied to him and he felt like he had killed his father and broke his heart and that he was stuck on Earth as a normal mortal for good.

Even when a chance to return came when his friends showed up, he didn't assume his powers would pop back and then when push came to shove realized innocent people didn't need to die in this fight and that he'd sooner let Loki kill him as opposed to killing off an entire town. I don't think Natalie's character factored too much into that decision.

It's one thing to try to wipe out a planet of enemies when you're basically immortal and full of super powers. You don't really think about anything but your goal and killing the bad guy. When you're stripped of all that and you know that fighting is going to kill hundreds or thousands of innocents and that sacrificing yourself saves all of them - i don't think it takes a series of events more than what was shown to get that point across.

It's kind of belittling the change, but it's almost like one of those 'duh' moments everyone has. It just dawns on you, more or less, and you realize the error of your ways.

Not on the Imax screen I saw it on. None of the trailers were Imax specific either. Green Lantern, Cowboys and Aliens, Transformers, Xmen, and Super 8. Of those, I liked what I saw of Super 8 the most.

Look at Iron Man and Dark knight, IM has a couple of supporting characters and Dark Knight is already established.

You can't have Thor without Odin, Loki, Frigga, Sif, Warriors Three, Heimdall. They even left out integral characters like balder the brave and hela.

Then you also have the frost giants AND everything else on midgard.

To have even more character developement and whatnot would of turned this movie into 3+ hours not that I would of complained haha.

They showed enough of his change to make it believable that he deserved to weild mjolnir. It started when he couldn't weild the hammer and accepted that he was stuck as a mortal and the realization that he had killed his father.

Saw it last night, thought they did a great job. I have always felt this would be the hardest character to make a good movie out of, but they did really well with it.
Always a Hawkeye fan, so that was an awesome little bonus.
Looking forward to seeing him again in Avengers.:thumbsup

There's only one thing I hated about seeing Thor today........after being ripped off by ticket prices then for popcorn and drinks at the concession for myself and my kids to the tune of nearly $40 total....the theater had the nerve to subject the audience to about a 1/2 dozen commercials before the trailers and movie came on.

Oh and BTW.....to anyone who hadn't seen Thor yet.....stay til after the credits run, there's a little teaser about the next film....not going to say what since it would spoil the surprise.

I don't buy this "it doesn't have to be great if it is about a superhero" ecscuse. The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and the first X-men were also superhero films. All good film with developed characters.

Not what I am saying at all. I go to have fun, and if I can connect on anything other than feeling the comicbook counterpart has been done justice and I get a little more out of it, then it's a bonus for me. Chris Nolan and his vision was brilliant as well as Bryan Singer's. And if Kenneth Branagh can pull it off again in the future, then in my eyes, he's risen to those ranks as well rounded director that happens to be a part of comic based film franchise.

Since Loki isn't dead, and seems to be manipulating people on Earth, I wonder how big a role he's going to play in The Avengers. And since they brought up the whole yggdrasil/cosmic/Einstein-Rosen bridge concept - not to mention the presence of the Infinity Gauntlet prop at Comic-Con(?) - I REALLY hope Thanos will be the big baddie, with Loki perhaps pulling the strings from behind the scenes. Will Loki use the cosmic cube to rebuild the bridge that connects Asgard to the other realms? Maybe he uses it, along with the return of the Infinity Gauntlet, as a bargaining chip to get Thanos on his side? My pants are getting tighter just thinking about the possibilities. love

Yes. It's been said elsewhere that Loki will in fact be the main villian for Avengers. I think it makes for a great cerebral/who-is-it film

I thought it was great, mainly because of the casting, costumes, and Asgard. I'm not a huge Marvel fan, but I have a pretty good idea who everyone is. I think I know less about Thor than any other Avenger. There were a few things I noticed were different from the comics, but it didn't really affect my enjoyment of the movie. The biggest one was the change in Jane's career. I also would have liked to see Baldur and more girth on Volstagg. However, I thought the Warriors Three, Sif, and Heimdall were fantastic, especially Fandral. That guy would make a great Green Arrow, too.
Normally, I like Kat Dennings, but she annoyed me. Not really her performance, but the jokes they used her for, like the mispronouncing of Mjolnir. I can understand why the roommate/friend character was needed, because Jane basically living with that older guy might have been considered a little creepy.
I was really happy that Kenneth Branagh brought, for lack of a better word, a theatrical air to the movie, especially the parts dealing with the Asgardians. Normally Anthony Hopkins is a little hammy, but he really made it work as Odin. I don't think I've ever seen Tom Hiddleston before, but I'm looking forward to seeing him as Loki again.
I absolutely bought Chris Helmsworth as Thor the moment he walked into the banquet hall, winking and tossing Mjolnir in the air. It didn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes either! Between him, Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansen, we have some of the best superhero casting I've ever seen.
Edited to add: Oh, and I wish they would have shown Thor drinking a chocolate milkshake in the diner instead of coffee.

gotta say, I had zero interest in this film. never interested in the character, saw the trailer and NOT impressed. I was dragged kicking and screaming to theater ready to have a
s-----y time. I was SO WRONG. it was very good on all levels. i wish more movies surprised me like this. THEY DID THIS ONE RIGHT.

much better than IronMan2, and refreshing change from all other super hero movies. Considering how many of the aspects of the film could have came off as silly or downright dumb, they did an amazing job making it all feel realistic.
