Things you're tired of seeing in movies

Sure someone has named this

Johnny Depp, movies for teenagers that seem to be knockoffs of Hunger Games or Twilight. Seriously there's tons of them and now there's one that's a tv show. If it wasn't for it being all pretty 25 year olds trying to be 19 it would be interesting. I agree with the blatant social commentary, it used to be they were subtle about it in movies and it was part of the story. The guy behind Elysium and district 9 is about as subtle as a baseball bat to the crotch.

"by the looks of them they look former military to me" or "they definitely have a military swagger"

I wouldn't argue that too much - while most civs won't pick up on it, I can count on the fingers of one nose how many times I've missed. Cops and military folk - the serious ones of each - might as well have it printed in large, state-approved letters on their foreheads, it's that obvious to someone who knows what to look for.

(Then again, I can also watch someone move and figure if they've had any "special physical training" - typically dance or martial arts - just by how they move. 11/10 I get the fact of it right, 7/10 or so I can usually tell what style of dancing or fighting. Then again, I do pay more attention than most people.)

Most of us SF types can pick each other out after only a glance, because we know what to look for. General military types take about two seconds, ditto cops.

(One of my best buddies spent six months trying to figure out how I knew he was a cop after just a passing glance. You kidding? You should have it written on your forehead with a marker! At least, to someone like me who pays attention to that sort of thing... I saw him and said "Hi, cop" as I walked back to punch in. I walked back to the counter, he wanted to know how I knew. I said you telegraph it - I even told him what gear he carried and where on his belt, just from his carriage.)

It's something that those of us "in the biz" can pick up on - but it's not something I'd expect a civ to pick up on - unless they were something like a third-generation military brat (or something else that had them growing up on post somewhere...)

Yeah. Can't be anywhere near that many people driving around with empty fuel tanks (liquid gasoline is only marginally flammable. Gasoline vapour is explosive.)

Jon, I was actually trying to reference when a (usually a secondary) character in a movie makes one of those comments or statements after looking at the bad guys through binoculars.

No, I know what you mean - especially when it's some character who has obviously never been closer to a uniform than passing an Army-Navy store. Yes, there are visual cues you can pick up, if you know what to look for. No, most people don't know what to look for. (I've known plenty of COPS who don't know what to look for - and they're paid for and trained to be perspicacious, moreso than the norm.

(After all, that's the sort of details that missing them can get you dead...)

(EDIT - And "obiwan kowalski"? For some bizarre reason, I rather like that... :) )

Jon's right. I'm former Army myself (an officer, but I hope you'll forgive that anyway) and can spot military types from a long way off. I'd suspect a good cop might notice that, too, as he'd likely have had interactions with that type over the years.
Heck, over the years I have had more than a few people walk up and ask what branch I was in. Those were usually older former military types as well.
He's also right about SF. I worked with them a few times, they really have a 'way' about them that's really hard to describe but impossible to miss if you know what you're looking for.

Speaking of binoculars, another thing I'm tired of seeing is when someone is looking through binoculars there is a huge border around the screen.

hmm~ well.. lets see...

- forced/unnecessary drama
- forced love stories
- that long conversation when the protagonist's/antagonist's ammo runs out
- character whines too much
- the over-dramatic female lead
- "inside the helmet" views that make it look like they have a lot of room inside them

When a guy is nabbed by the cops but instead of shoving his head into the cruiser they let him stand there for about 20-30 seconds so he can say some last words at the hero.

On the same note when they allow a dying villain a whole monologue ... especially when a ticking bomb (... or secret base etc.) is about blow. I can't believe I saw it in Dark Knight Rises even.

They do that with scopes too, at this point it's been done so often I'm not certain that a scene looking through binos or a scope would even look right without the matting now a days.

Just some pet peeves of mine.

Bad guys shooting limp-wristed(wasnt that a rappers name?) gantsta-style. The guns either going to jam or impale the front sight in the forhead(as in KICK ASS II).

Carrying a folding knife with a pocket clip clipped to the outside of the pocket(season 1 Walking Dead).

Buscadero(any 1930-40s westeren) set in 1870s westerns(did not appear until old west shows early 1900s. Most recently seen in Jonah Hex) or metal lined speed draw rigs(1950s design) in period westerns(Kevin Costner westerns and blame you director of Silverado/Lawerance Kasden" hope I got it right).

1800s historic theme movies where a weapon did not exist. Colt 1873 and 1892s used in the civil war.

Shooting handgun in rush and hitting targets way the hell off in the distance with unworldly accuracy, while 40 guys with full auto really close can't hit said person with 100000 rounds

Sword fights and Lightsaber fights, (i'm looking at YOU, Prequel Trilogy...) where they can never lay a blade on each other, yet, somehow, a kick or a punch always gets through.....HOW????

Good one, you did indeed see that. I caught the movie last night on HBO.
Yeah, they're counting down the final seconds and they waste all that time letting her say her peace? If that'd been me, I'd have given her hearty, "Yeah, blah blah, [bleep] you..." and ran to the bomb to get it ready to move. Who'd really care what she'd have to say at that point?
