Things you're tired of seeing in movies

The character is out of focus and the camera is focused on him/her/it only when him/her/it gets closer. Till then it is all blurry. This is going on movies, series and even documentaries, and is annoying as hell. Focus the darn thing or let someone else focus it, don't make me think I left the glasses on the night stand.

I've probably written this before, but I'm SO sick and tired of the 'news camera' look for movies, like it's happening in real time and the camera operator just noticed something important and quickly zoomed in on it. It was a very annoying thing for the new BSG...

I don't mind when the camera is just a little unsteady for the documentary handheld camera effect, but I really can't stand it when the camera is going all over the place as if they are trying to shoo away a mosquito at the same time.

BSG took the whole shaky cam thing as well as the pan and zoom to a ridiculous extreme. Even in shots where the camera in even a documentary would be locked they still have the camera shaking. Then there's the constant pan and zoom as if the cameraman never manages to catch the action in the moment, ever.

I SO hate that. If they're pretending there's an invisible documentarian present, fine, but the quick zoom to get the shot stuff only applies to battles----like, okay, something's crashing, you're doing what you have to do to get the shot because it'll be over in less than a second. Fine. A shuttle leisurely coming into a routine landing? No need to snap-zoom. People having a conversation in a room? No need there, either. The invisible handheld cameraman is still going to steady himself as best he can, and in most circumstances will do a pretty good job of it. If you shoot handheld, you're going to get a little bit of motion anyway, there is no need to deliberately exaggerate it.

I don't remember what it was but several years ago I caught a bit of a popular cop show where it was all handheld, which, per above, is fine, except that the camera would be relatively steady through a shot, and then at the last second before a cut would do a little zoom or a pan for no reason whatsoever. EVERY SINGLE SHOT. I had to change the channel.

Films and TV series often fail to show the immediate psychological shock after an unexpected event or trauma. Not everyone runs away screaming. Some just stand there dumbfounded, some just freeze.

Years ago my young daughter and I were in a Dollar General store at the check out, when we heard a commotion out front. Turns out a pedestrian had been struck by a car in the parking lot/car park. I told the employee we need to call 911; she said she wasn't getting involved in this. So I asked for her phone and called 911. I then walked out into the street. The woman was sitting in the middle of the street, awake and alert, but moaning, saying her leg/ hip hurt.

I kid you not... there were several people standing around her, not doing ANYTHING to assess or help, just talking to each other and observing. The driver of the car that hit her was standing right there, on her cell phone... saying "I just hit someone in the parking lot" In fact, her car was still running!

As a physician, I quickly assessed the injured woman (she did not appear to be critical, no head or chest injuries that I could see), I turned to the driver of the car and said, "Ma'am, turn off your car" and at that point EMS was almost there. The interesting thing was that it was like people were WAITING to be told how to respond, and told what to do.
This happens All the time..
there is also an element of voyeurism...
This has only been heightened in recent years by the mobile phone culture.
Even Stephen King wrote a story about it.
I remember seeing an incident where a person was stuck under a bus, there were like thirty people huddled round? I asked if an Ambulance had been called...it had not so I ran into the bank next door and asked to use their phone..
Anyway the film question, its all down to pacing they just don't have time to show everything is my assumption...

Interesting this technique of film making. I do tv extras/ background here in the UK and recently finished working on a second series of an office based drama. whereas series (or season as you Americans say) one was a lot of steady camera movements on tracks, every office shot this time was a small shoulder held camera which should be an interesting look. Almost docu-style And I wonder if this is a stylistic choice as every director and DoP adopted it Throughout.

Ok I have another driving one. I noticed lately around here (Ohio - U.S.) that people don't stop and wait when you are backing out any more. I've had people in my own neighborhood zoom around behind me while I was clearly backing out. Same thing at the grocery store. I about backed into some idiot in a Fiero (WTH have they been? Haven't seen one for probably 20 years) who wouldn't stop while I was backing out. Luckily the backup warning thing started beeping for once when a car was actually there, and saved me. The guy then flips me off, when I had the right of way since I was backing up before he tried driving around me.

Wow, things are clearly very different in Ohio because here in California the traffic on the street has the right-of-way and if you're backing out of a driveway you have to wait for the traffic to clear. If you continue to back out and someone driving down the street hits you, the accident will likely be charged to you.

Certainly here in UK people have lost the ability to drive walk oh and talk..
Similar situation to me daily is people see me on a main road and literally pull straight out in front of me...
We call it Lockdown Syndrome here...but pedestrians do it too..often on their phones its like they think they have this invisible forcefield to protect them grrr!

I blame the movies when did you ever see a cop a lawyer a bright young thing use the Xing/zebra crossing..

I quite liked the effect in BG as it sort of worked well for getting to the Dogfights..
Drama etc I agree and it has spawned some of the dodgiest settings on modern TV that is plain awful- Hi Res, Super Frame rate, Dynamic and other names they use.. it upscale? the picture or speeds up the frame rate so you have no Flickr and everything looks like you are watching a live stream..
I distinctly remember watching the Ads on some Cali TV back in 2008 maybe when the stations switched to HD 1080p ? and it made me so dizzy..
Later my new TV came with it and I remember watching SW even old B/W movies which now looked like they were shot on Video the day before..it certainly takes the sheen off some movies thats for sure...
Those classic Panovision sweeping vistas with a lovely grain lovingly created with beautiful lenses simply washed away.
I dont use the TV function these days for similar reasons, I like to watch my Classic movies the way the Director intended...

I don't know that we've given it a name on this side of the pond, but it's no different. It seems that staying at home because of the pandemic has further diminished what little skills people had for the act of driving a car, because so many people here are so much worse at it than they were before.
