The Wolfman!

I saw a lot of "Curse of the Werewolf" in the new movie (which I loved because Curse was my fav).

Believe it or not, I think they threw the church scene in as a homage to Curse of the Wererabbit .

I don't think I've ever made a negative comment about a movie here, but DANG was that movie crap! I liked that the werewolf looked quite similar to the original (for the final act of the movie at least, I didn't notice anything but blurry fleshy CG before then) and I liked the transformation, but the acting was TERRIBLE. Somebody recently told me they wanted to see the movie because "Anthony Hopkins has never been in a stinker". So much for that.

SPOILER:

Benicio del Toro was particularly bad in the last scene. I don't think I've ever seen a death that unintentionally corny. It was also a nice cop out to say that he spent a good portion of his life in America so that he wouldn't have to learn the accent.

That's the same as the original 'The Wolfman'.

It's been several years since I saw the original, forgot about that. But it's still a cop out. :rolleyes

Yeah, I always thought it was a very um, handy way to explain Lon Chaney's American accent in the original, too. Lot's of 'Mighty glads' and so on happening. He was supposed to be away in America for 18 years.

Ah well, all part of the charm.

Since we've been wondering if other classic horror properties will be redone, here's some info on a new Frankenstein series. Not the original Shelley concept, however:

Producers Ralph Winter and Terry Botwick acquired the film rights to Dean Koontz's Frankenstein series. Variety reported that the "project places the doctor--a socially prominent and successful businessman--and his super-human original creation Deucalion in modern-day New Orleans." Winter and Botwick, who are hoping to launch a franchise, said, "These books have enough twists and turns to keep the public coming back to the theaters for many years to come."

I agree! I saw it this past Monday night and thought the same thing.

I didn't really care much for this movie, though, and I really wanted to like it. I just didn't care for the twist about the "family" thrown in. I wished they'd left all that out and stuck more to the original versions story. The other thing that I was really surprised was that I didn't like was how the Wolfman looked in final transformation! I liked the pics I had seen online so I was surprised I didn't care as much for it on screen. Seeing it on the big screen just left me thinking, "Eh. I've seen better." It's like there was too much hair around the face which masked a lot of expression and detail in the makeup and his teeth seemed too big for his mouth, sounds strange but that's the way it looked to me.

All in all, not a terrible movie but I was disappointed. Curse of the Werewolf still reigns as king for the best looking wolfman/werewolf. (Sorry Rick!)

For your consideration, I offer a little known movie called "Freejack". :lol

Wow Beeb, Of all people, I was hoping you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Yeah, I'm surprised as well! :unsure I really wanted to like it and from what I'd seen in the trailers and pics, I was sure I was going to. My thing with the final makeup is that given the dim lighting and heavy hair coverage, much of the facial expressions and detail of the makeup is lost. You look at Lon Chaney Jr.'s makeup and my personal favorite, Oliver Reed in Curse of the Werewolf, you see the actors face Yes they are still "hairy" but you see the man behind the monster... if you catch my drift.

SPOILER....

The thing that really turned me off was Anthony H. character being a werewolf as well and the whole "battle of the werewolves" at the end. I wish they'd stuck more with the original story. Mix that with a little toned down makeup/teeth and I think I would have liked it a lot more.

SPOILER END....

I'm going to give it another go as a couple of my buds really want to see it so I told them I would go with them. We'll see if a second viewing does anything to change my mind. I mean, given my love of all things werewolf/wolfman, I feel a certain obligation to like it! :lol

Here's hoping!

I saw it a second time with my wife on Monday. She really liked it too.

On the second viewing, I liked the make-up even more. I understand what you mean about being able to see the human through the make-up, as Werewolves are reluctant monsters and tortured souls, but for some reason, the savageness really worked for me.

One particular scene that Benicio nailed that satisfies the tortured soul part:

When his father wakes him up inside the tree after his first night as a Werewolf, and he is covered in blood, and he realizes what he's done, you really feel sorry for him

I agree, I think Benicio did a great job a Talbot, you really feel for him. I did like that aspect of the movie very much! If there is indeed 20 mins or so chopped from the film, I would love to see the movie with it included.

I watched it yesterday, very impressed, loved the makeup and the story, and as others have said it is what it is, a monster movie.
I'm glad its not like coppola's dracula, thats a movie with a rod firmly up its backside, don't get me wrong, i loved it, but it was trying to hard

I was at a show some two/three years ago now- most of the people there had just finished up on The Wolfman in the FX/ makeup dept
That's a LONG time in post !!!!!!
