The Winter Soldier - Costume Research Thread

For the vest, what I'm doing is I bought a cheap faux leather jacket from eBay and a faux leather vest from a thrift shop. I'm going to cut the sleeves off the jacket and use them to make the straps on the front, and use parts of the vest for other details. I have no idea how it'll turn out, but I'll hopefully post pics when I'm done (unless it's embarassingly bad).

Tutorial thing/Write-up done! I tried to compress it as much as I could, no one likes long posts~

I rehashed images of the completed mask and drew on them to hopefully make it more tutorial like. It's a little involved but I'm sure some short cuts can be made to save time.

For convenience, here's the pattern I mocked up for the mask: VVWinterSoldierMask

Thank you so much! This is brilliant.

the only thing about this is it's size. for anyone like me who needs accuracy, this particular toy rifle is actually a mini version of the real thing. the actual gun (or airsoft) is 36 inches in length.
Oh wow, the toy gun is a lot smaller then. I will be on the hunt for an alternative!

You're very welcome! :)

I'm currently working on the arm. I'm using my duck tape dummy, sprayed expanding foam over the arms, now in the caving process. Dunno if this will become a fail, but will post how it goes!

Just got the Gotham city fx mask it looks good fairly price good build quality, but absolutely no ventilation or way to breathe in the mask, You have to cut holes or slits in it to breathe small detail that should have been handled in prototype stage.

Just popping in real quick to say thank you to everyone that's contributed to this post, you guys rock and your costumes look awesome. I hope I can glean some talent from y'all as I wrestle through my own cosplay!

I'm currently considering this one. It's not the full 36" but it is a little bit bigger than the one you were looking at before, so I think it's a passable substitute, at least for now!

good to know.

i think i will get that third available ebay mask. and then post a review on that one since no one has done so yet.

I finished my kneepads.

They're made from corded cordura over a wonderflex/magicsculp base shape, with craft foam and ... I don't know what it's called, but like mousepad foam ... as padding. I wouldn't want to use them for sports but for just kneeling on the floor they're quite functional.

Just my 2 cents but don't buy the Gotham city fx mask under any circumstance!! I have tried poking holes and cutting slits in the latex or rubber its so thick that it just won’t give and stay open and you can’t breathe. Why would you sell a rubber mask that covers ones mouth and nose so they can’t breathe, wtf kind of thinking is that. You gotta deal with that stuff before you mass sell in the prototype stage.

Oh wow, ace work on the kneepads! Your ribbing is spot on, any tips how to do this? I've looked into piping and pintucks, but those methods aren't the process I'm looking for.

Thanks! For the ribbing I used a stiff cord sandwiched between two pieces of fabric--I placed the pieces of cord one at a time and used a zipper foot to stitch right next to them.

those are best looking kneepads yet! any chance at a tutorial?

EHyde- excellent idea, along with vonviolet's pattern, we should be able to add a great level of detail to our WS.
Did you make the rolled edge like piping with cord and cordura or is it done some other way?
Thanks. Good job!

Yes, the rolled edge is piping, but not with cordura--I thought the texture looked different in the reference photos, so I used a leather-like fabric.

Thank you very much for the tips! Many headaches and sewing mishaps will now be avoided. Yup I agree with the fabric/texture choices. Sometimes the ref looks like all leather, but then it can look like a combo of fabric and leather, I guess pick the thing you like best and go with it~

Also kneepad fabric/texture ref for those who haven't looked into it yet:

Anybody have any progress on the jacket/vest-type thing yet? I've found work arounds for just about every other aspect of The Winter Soldier's onscreen outfit save for his jacket. It's not going to be 100% screen accurate but I'm doing this on a budget so I'm cutting corners to make sure I can splurge on big things like the arm & the jacket. I'm going for black BDU pants, I'll see if I can work on my boots, I've got a line on airsoft guns & knives...I just need to make Bucky's harness, arm, & jacket.

So...has anybody gotten any closer to a pattern for Bucky's jacket?

Thanks in advance!!

Desi

I don't suppose this helps but I modified an existing jacket pattern to have a single piece "front" and left out the sleeves, I'm sure it would be easy enough to do with most Jacket patterns though? It zipped up under my arm and the straps were simply created separately and were sewn into the side seams. They didn't unbutton or anything but I had about 3 days to make it -.-

This bums me out because I ordered it minutes before you posted this. Hopefully I have more luck but i'm not holding my breath.
