The Winter Soldier - Costume Research Thread

I built it in the computer and CNC cut it in 2 halves. The barrels were separate of the handle.

Okay, so I figured I would do something useful, and post up a review of one of the WS masks available online. (Not sure if they're all the same, but the one I bought was on eBay: Captain America 2 Winter Soldier Bucky Barnes Mask Cosplay Prop | eBay) 60 bucks was one of the cheapest prices I saw, add in free shipping (and it arriving less than a week after I ordered it) and it's not bad.

Now, onto the actual item itself!

The mask is a solid piece of rubber, with the 'mesh' on the sides being solid as well. The only 'vents' are a few around the nose and mouth, and a couple of holes near the ears.

The part of the mesh that differs in shade was done by just painting the rubber (or dying it, I can't really tell) and (if you can see, not sure how well the crappy iPhone camera picked it up) there are definitely some spots that were missed.

Overall, the mask is... okay. The straps that are currently sewn on it are a. Too short, b. The backpack keeper that was sewn onto one side was put on backwards, making it impossible to use properly unless I take it off and reverse it, and c. Positioned poorly on the top. Put on it sits around where your cerebellum is, which means that the more you tighten it, the more it will slip down towards your neck and cause the mask to not sit on your face properly. I'm not sure if this is just from the angle of the strap or the lack of length.

Also, I'm not sure if this is just a biproduct of the forming process (or the material itself) but the mask... stinks. Not in a nasty, methane-y sort of way, but it has a very sweet odor to it that's a bit overwhelming when you put it on. (Oh, and since it's solid rubber, you sweat like crazy as soon as it goes on.)

Overall, if molding the mask was too far out of someone's depth, I'd recommend this. It's not terribly expensive, and looks pretty good. With some modifications it could be a great mask, but I don't know how receptive rubber is to other materials.

Oh, and lastly...

Who the hell is Bucky!?

thank you so much for your review! I had been hoping someone would post pictures of this mask, i've been eying it on ebay for awhile. it looks so good! does it looks like it would be easy to cut more venting holes in it to make it more bearable to wear in hot weather?

Yes. One of the things I was thinking of doing was just cutting the rubber 'mesh' out and replacing it with actual mesh, would make it breathe much better (and the vents in the front are formed, just need to be cut out).

One other slight issue I noticed, if when you tighten the straps too tight, the mask will sort of buckle between the tip of your nose and your upper lip. Loosening it fixed the issue though.

I think for fun I'm going to make my own mask anyway, just to have a custom fit, though I'm not sure what material to use.

Ok, It's up in the Junkyard - http://www.therpf.com/f75/winter-soldier-tec-38-derringer-215127/#post3329073

Heres the finished piece, what do you think?

I uploaded an stl of the edit Gerber Mark II knife. It's in two pieces with a extruding surface and a cut out so that it is easy to glue together. This way you can print it out full size (should be 11.6 in total after it is put together) if you have a build plate the size of the MakerBot. I also thickened the blade because when I did a test print it was very thin, and rounded out the edges a bit so it wouldn't be so sharp. I'm running a print of it right now, I'll post pictures after.
Share alike on that file please, all credit for design goes to the original file maker on grabcad that I posted earlier.

On to the Tanto!

I bought the same mask, it smells like some sort of berry (makes me gag, how charming), so I plan on soaking it in talc powder then washing it with a gentle soap. The mask is dyed so you can do quite a bit to it and not have the paint flake off.
But mine isn't messed up strap wise, also probably fits me better because I'm a girl, so the straps are fine.

Lucky you. I think I'm going to attempt to sew an extension onto the straps. I've never sewn anything into rubber like this, and I fear I may ruin it if I try

Also, high-five for having an (what I assume, from your username) bitchin' first name! XD

Hi! Guys.
Are you aware that there is another one in addition to the knife GERBAR?
"Benchmade socp dagger" is already mounted in the side of the Mk-2.

So I got an early start on my cosplay since I decided to go to Philadelphia Comic Con. I've been rushing a bit since it's in less than two weeks, and I just finished the arm. I made mine out of craft foam and decided to hot glue the foam pieces onto a sleeve of a shirt. I'll post some photos later, but I think it turned out pretty decent for my first attempt at doing anything remotely like this. It's not screen accurate or the cleanest looking arm, but it does allow me a lot of mobility and it breathes very well.

Any tips for the vest? I came up with my own pattern of sorts but I'm going into it completely blind so any help would be great.

Other than that, I stopped by a tactical supply store and found some pants, a holster, belt, and harness. Again, not completely screen accurate, and a bit pricey, but it'll definitely work.

EDGE - thank you!! but there appears to be two versions of this knife?? one serrated(178SBK) and one not (176BK). who knows which one it is, since he never uses it.
