The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Cancellation of de minimis trade exemption targeting China imports has been delayed

Awesome. That might let the tric slip in duty-free, we should ask Chris or Charlotte about that. Here's the link to the above headline.

EDIT--According to the article, the EO pauses the closure of the exemption until Commerce can establish a mechanism to process all those shipped items and collect the tariffs. So it's a temporary pause, but OTOH it could take Commerce a really long time to get its act together on that. We'll see.

I've had a shipment come in valued at $1000 last year with no duty on that amount.

I am intimately familiar with tariffs. Some things are just duty free, somethings are not. I don’t know where a tv prop gets classified, but without the de minimus rule and the 10% Chinese duty, the price is gonna be higher than $350

This was posted on TWC blog yesterday. It looks like manufacturing start moved from the beginning of march to mid-March.

Manufacturing is starting in Mid-March, so a few weeks after that we hope to have the first units coming off the production line.

Keep in mind that Wands license is not to make prop replicas. I don’t know the exact language but it’s more like an electronic novelty item.

Wand just goes the extra mile when making their products. But technically they aren’t classified as replicas.

More info from Chris Barnardo. No stress, no anger, no drama, nobody “getting away with anything”… just passing on information.

Chris,
Question of the week: Does the Mid-March manufacture start for the first production run look like it’s going to hold? And as a follow up question: Are pre-orders done once that first shipment comes off the line or some time before, or after they arrive with you guys? (just trying to figure out the pre-order time in relation to the production time line).
Thanks
V/R
Dan

Dan, Yes as far as I know the mid-March start date is holding and we are gearing up for it. Two of our team are heading out to the factory to oversee the start of production. Our intention is to fly the stock in so we should be seeing shipments in early to mid April, but we have yet to work out thus whether it will be a straight purchase or a preorder. POf course that can all change, but we are certianly very close to having the finished thing in your hands.

Just waiting. I'm in no hurry to get it. When it comes out, it comes out. As far as the tariff, if it applies, that's too bad, but it's not going to break me. The purpose of the tariff is to make it more attractive for companies to make product in countries other than China (*gasp* maybe even in the United States!). Ultimately that will be a good thing for workers. I'm willing to pay extra for that long-term goal.

If stuff manages to get made domestic/closer to home I hope for better QC and more accuracy since there isn't an ocean between and perhaps better understanding of what their customer wants meaning accuracy. Seen so many shared "artists proofs" pictures on paint or what have you sent overseas that supposedly was used as example and the end product rather misses the mark and it wouldn't have taken too much more attention to details with an airbrush for instance. The artist could visit and train people for a day even.

Time will tell. I have no complaints about the accuracy or QC of the Wand phaser and communicator I own. Are they 100% accurate? That's hard to say since there was so much variation in the actual props used on the show. Are they accurate enough? I'd say yes...given manufacturing constraints. For instance, no mass manufactured phaser is going to have the seams between the two halves of the P2 filled, sanded, and painted. I'd also say the Wand products are better than anything that's ever been available before and at a pretty reasonable price point for what you get.

The unfortunate reality of mass manufacturing always results in compromises from the artists conception. It's the same with artists designing concept cars. The production version is never the same. The artist didn't take into considerations required for stamping and molding in his vision.

The only complaint I have about the Wand phaser is the difficulty in replacing the battery. That was fixed in the comm.
