Now that they have pigs in the prison I'd hope they get smart and take the skins to make leather armor from, I'm not sure how pig leather compares to cow but it's better than nothing and should be enough to stop the bite of a walker, especially if they reinforce it with a bit of metal of thick plastic, I don't care how unfeeling a walker might be and immune to pain, human teeth just aren't that sharp and humans just don't have all that much bite force, esp. when compared to other animals.
Assume someone in the prison had a rudimentary understanding of how to skin and tan hides (i.e. Hershel, Daryl, etc.), the tanning process makes leather much stronger than flesh. A quote from Thulsa Doom (Conan the Barbarian) comes to mind, "Steel isn't strong, boy, flesh is stronger!" :lol Anyhow, there's different ways to increase the strength of leather ... Make it thicker, boil it, and boil it in wax (cuir bouilli) ... I've built a medieval armor suit using cuir bouilli leather and its difficult to work but well worth the effort. Steel blades hardly scuff it, so undead teeth would be no match.
You guys keep missing the whole, it's not the zombies that are infecting them, they already have the virus idea. Their death is the activation of the virus, which causes the reanimation. Not a bite from a walker.
We discussed this a few seasons ago, it's not the actual bite nor the transmission of some "zombie virus". The best reasoning for why a zombie bite kills quickly is because the zombie mouth is a petri dish for all sorts of bacteria much like the Komodo dragon, "Auffenberg described the Komodo dragon as having septic pathogens in its saliva (he described the saliva as "reddish and copious"), specifically the bacteria E. coli, Staphylococcus sp., Providencia sp., Proteus morgani, and P. mirabilis."
