The Walking Dead Season 3

I'm not saying I agree with the Governor's point of view, but Merle surely didn't tell him the whole story about what happened in Atlanta, and the fact that the Governor found out that 10 people took over an overrun prison (a feat that the Governor says is impossible) pretty much shows how much bad-ass the Governor considers them.

I see your point. He basically says at the end of the episode that either a sizable group has moved into their backyard or 10 people did something that Merle said was impossible so he has reason to worry about them. Also, seeing how Glenn has easily taken down a walker while tied to a chair, he has reason to fear that this group has stronger (not just physically) members that could threaten his hold on power.

I really wish this show would display how hard skulls really are.

I've been saying the same thing about the skulls, but the general theroy seems to be that it's decayed so badly that it's essentially lost it's protective capabilities and is much weaker as a result.

*shrug* I just enjoy the show for what it is.

Sounds good to me.
Lots of screaming in the woods. Tyrese and friends fight through walkers in the forest. One of their group is bitten. They stumble across the prison and debate whether to leave their injured comrade behind. Tyrese decides that they will bring her with them for now, and they climb over a broken-down section of the fence.

Andrea and The Governor share some more sweet-talk. Gov pays a visit to Penny and sings her a lullaby. He gets angry with her when she won't make eye contact and sends her back into her closet without dinner.

Glenn rips the bones out of the walker he fought off last episode and hands one to Maggie. Makeshift weaponry. Meanwhile, Rick's rescue party surveys the Woodbury wall and opts to sneak in around the side.

Merle and The Governor plot the decimation of the prison faction and plan to let walkers reclaim the place to cover their tracks. Merle is concerned about Daryl and The Gov agrees to make a play for Daryl to be their inside man. Glenn and Maggie are to be disposed of tonight.

Rick's group searches the room where Michone was originally questioned. A Woodbury citizen catches them but is soon neutralized non-lethally.

Comic relief moment as Axle hits on Beth, then hits on Carol when he discovers that she's not a lesbian.

Maggie and Glenn fight off Merle and his lackey. Maggie stabs the lackey in the neck with the zombie bone. Reinforcements arrive and get the better of Maggie and Glenn, who are led off with bags over their heads. The gunfire from the brief scuffle attracts Rick and crew, who ambush the execution squad with flash and smoke grenades and grab their friends. Commotion is spreading through town at this point and The Governor is alerted. Michone sneaks off amid the chaos, heads straight for the The Governor's apartment, and awaits his return with sword drawn.

Andrea refuses to be marginalized as the gunfight spills into the streets, and she fires at "the terrorists". Smoke grenades block her vision and she only gets a glimpse of Oscar, in prison uniform. Daryl lays cover fire as the others escape. A random Woodbury citizen shoots and kills Oscar (to make room for Tyrese). Rick hallucinates that the killer is Shane and guns him down. Maggie puts another round in Oscar to prevent him from reanimating, and the group escapes without Daryl and Michone.

Meanwhile, Carl is running things at the prison. Beth, Herschel and Carl hear screams coming from somewhere in the prison, and Carl goes alone to investigate. This leads him into an unsecured part of the prison where Tyrese and friends are not doing too well. Carl leads them back to safety.

Michone hears Penny thumping around and discovers The Governor's secret room. The Governor comes home and begs Michone not to hurt Penny, but Michone shows no mercy and stabs Penny through the head. A brutal fight ensues. The fish tanks wind up crashing down on the floor. Gov tries to pin Michone's arm down in front of one of the newly liberated zombie heads, chomping away. Michone reaches for her sword but it's just out of grasp, so she opts for a shard of glass instead, and stabs The Governor right in the eye. She's about to finish the job when Andrea arrives with gun drawn. The two circle each other and Andrea lets Michone walk away while she tends to Gov and surveys the room.

The injured member of Tyrese's group is revealed to be Donna. She doesn't make it. Carl maneuvers out of the room and locks up Tyrese's group for the safety of his own. No mingling for now.

Michone reunites with Rick. Rick isn't happy about her disappearance, but they will continue working together.

The Governor makes his mid-season finale speech at the Woodbury zombie arena. He names Merle a traitor and has his men drag Daryl out into the circle, captured and bound. The town chants for the brothers to be put to death.

Fair enough. I think my local group (that I have yet to join) is just a bit more bloodthirsty than most segments of the SCA, since they follow proper disciplines and all own sharp weapons besides their rattan equipment. Most aspects of medieval sword fighting are kind of useless, as they focus on distracting and parrying, but many aspects of German longsword fighting lend themselves well to quickly decapitating a group of walkers. Kendo is also a great option, because it teaches economy of movement and spatial awareness. I would not recommend fencing lessons. All poking, no strong blows. You'd have to be really good to get eye shots, and there's no slashing capabilities to hack off encroaching arms. The best melee for actively clearing out zombies will be the katana or the hand and a half broadsword. The best for personal protection in the event of a zombie suddenly appearing in your personal space is either a kukri or a tanto (or a WWI trench spike). Spears would be handy but whoever uses it needs to able to accurately stab the eyes or mouth. Halberds/poleaxes are really the best long range melee weapon, since they can be 7-8ft long and gravity can do most of the work. You'd also get a surer skull break than with a hatchet. But the halberdiers would lack the ability to kill any walker who gets inside that 7ft perimeter.

I really wish this show would display how hard skulls really are. I also wish the zombies wouldn't drop dead without the back of the brain getting obliterated. But alas, in a world of 11 round revolvers and 20 round shotguns, human biology will always be left out to dry.

I wouldn't say that all fencing would be useless against walkers, once they get accustomed to the weight a sabre fencer would do just fine, they'd just have to get used to head shots is all.

I agree on all the other weapons though although I think that a spear would be much more useful than you give it credit. If you can stab a walker in the head with a knife and kill it then you could do the same with a spear. To be safe I'd use something like a boar spear with that crossbar (or add one) to keep the spear from going too deep and allowing the walker to run up the shaft and close in you, not to mention that a shallower stab would make it easier to pull it out.

What would actually make for a better overall ant-walker weapon wouldn't be a bladed weapon but a bludgeoning weapon like a baseball bat, club, mace, or flail. They're easier to use, don't require sharpening and do nasty damage to bones. Just think of what kind of damage a good footman's, or even horseman's, could do to a walker's skull, it probably wouldn't take much to smash it in and unlike a blade, you don't need to be that precise. The only downside is that most bludgeoning weapons don't have that much reach, better than a knife but not nearly as good a long/broadsword or even katana.

Not to mention that a group that size and that capable could easily make him look bad if they got admitted into Woodbury. We all know that the Governor lies to the people about various things including just how bad it is out there and he wouldn't people to begin to think that isn't as bad and unsurvivable outside of Woodbury as he would have them believe. Also, word of their existence and what they can do and what they're like might give people second thoughts about Woodbury or at least get them thinking about their options and changes if they ever get unhappy with him or the way things are in Woodbury. Not that there seems to be any discontent but I'm sure that the Governor is probably a bit paranoid about the possibility discontent but the prospect of going it alone outside of Woodbury discourages pretty much everybody but the possibility of going elsewhere might start giving some people ideas and the Governor can't have that now.

vane123- All of your posts are in this thread, begging for spoilers. Please, for the sake of others who haven't read the spoiler tagged info or read the comics, the least you can do is mark your OWN spoilers after you've finally received them.:facepalm

[EDIT: To clarify, this was in reference to a post that has since been removed by mods.]

Got a theory here on where Andrea is going. This is spoilerized because it's based on my foreknowledge of what's gonna happen from the comics. Click at your own peril.

I think they're grooming Andrea to take the role of Lily from the comics. For those who don't recall, Lily is the female Woodbury person who helps in the attack on the prison, and ends up shooting and killing Lori -- and the baby. Lori is running away from the prison with the baby, gets shot, and falls down on top of the baby, suffocating it. After doing this, she loses her mind and, when the walkers regroup and attack again, kills the Governor and kicks him into a group of walkers to buy the Woodbury attack force time to retreat into the prison. However, they run out of ammo in their retreat, and the implication in the comics is that they're all eventually overwhelmed and killed.

I suspect that we will see Lori gradually become closer and closer to the Governor, get convinced that her former friends have lost it, and participate in the attack, only to betray her former friends completely, kill....I dunno...maybe Carol? And the baby in the process. And when that happens, she'll be the one to pull the trigger on the governor. Won't save her in the end, though.

Interesting theory. My thoughts on it, also containing spoilers from the comic:

If they were to go down this path with Andrea's character how would they continue on the post-prison story with Rick and Andrea? Then again, are they really going to do what they did at the end of the prison sequence in the comic?? I also think that since tv probably has stricter rules there wont be a baby killing like in the comic.

I don't see how they can avoid Judith's death. You can't go through the apocalypse with a baby. At least not until they reach the Alexandria Safe Zone, I'd figure. The Rick and Andrea story post-prison, that I'm not sure about. If she goes the Lily route, obviously that won't happen, but they've changed a LOT of stuff from the comics. At this point, I'm not even sure what they'll do with Tyrese's character. I'm wondering if he'll end up decapitated after all. For that matter, I'm wondering if Michonne will end up torturing the Governor like she does in the comic.

One thing's for sure, though. All these changes make it absolutely worthwhile to keep reading the comic AND watching the show. :)

I agree that the baby will definitely be a tough choice for the writers but you might be correct. The influx of new characters at this point shocked me as Tyrese was introduced a good bit earlier in the comics - I had almost written off the idea of them joining the show! It will be out of place to have Michonne torture the Gov - as he hasn't raped/tortured her like in the comic - and I don't see Maggie doing it either. I do think at some point Milton will join our main characters though

Unfortunately, every weapon has its pros & cons, and, in general, average modern people wouldn't be capable of using melee weapons for more than a few minutes at full force. There's a good reason warriors (incl. modern soldiers) train with a variety of weapon platforms.

Or just join a group like Rick and hopefully get the others to realize the advantage of a multi-weapon coordinated attack. It only took him 10 months and a dozen or so deaths to get the group to work together. :lol Besides attracting walkers with the sound of gun fire, unless you happen upon a cache of ammo those guns aren't going to last forever; so get training! :popcorn

While you do make a good point I'd argue that by this time in the series anyone who's relied on some sort of melee weapon to survive would be able to wield with little to no difficulty. Would they be as proficient as a medieval or Renaissance knight or man at arms or samurai, no, but then again they'd have the advantage of not having to swing a sword or mace in full or any armor and they'd need to use less force since they aren't having to hack or smash their way through armor either, just (rotting) skin and bones.

In all fairness, I think that Rick has done fairly well with just a bunch of civilians that, for the most part, have had little to no firearms or any other type survival or combat training. That is until Herschel's farm and the zombie swarm overran it, not much could have been done about it except that they really needed a better bugout plan other than just panicking and heading to where you think everybody else will be. There should have a been a central rallying point for everybody to get to at the farm so everybody can be accounted for and they could get to the vehicles in as organized a fashion as possible and everybody watching each other's backs. If they can't make it to the rally point then there needs to be a designated secondary rallying point that everybody heads to if they get separated so there's no, I think this is where everybody will head to.

Problem isn't proficiency. Despite how the bodies are depicted on the show, the human skeleton is very strong. Even more so when covered in ligaments, tendons, muscle, flesh and clothing. Bladed weapons would need to be very sharp and constantly re-honed. As far as blunt weapons, it takes a lot more force to crush a skull with a baseball bat than most would think. To kill a live person, it only takes a fraction of that force, but the zombies require actual brain trauma.

If an average american (physically) somehow managed to survive 10+ months using just a bludgeoning weapon, they would certainly be building their endurance however it would still necessitate daily training regiments.

So, I'm not saying its impossible; just that using melee weapons takes a lot of energy. More than some might think.

BTW, I've got 10+ years with the military and been fighting in Adrian Empire for 15+ years using real steel weapons. :)

I totally agree! I wasn't faulting Rick at all. He's been trying to get the group to stop putting themselves in danger for 2.5 seasons. But you can't fix stupid.

I'd say that surviving 10+ months in a zombie apocalypse with a bludgeoning weapon would be a pretty good training regimen. You either start to get in shape and build your endurance while using your weapon of choice or you wind up dead.

As for being in the military, that doesn't necessarily mean much unless you're in combat arms and infantry specifically, any other MOS/branch and there's nothing saying that you'd necessarily be any kind of shape. Plus there's a world of difference in the fitness level of the average Marine or Soldier and the average Sailor or Airman, there's a pretty big difference between physical fitness requirements for the first 2 and the latter 2. FYI, this isn't directed at you personally, this is just a general comment on the idea that being in the military necessarily means that you're particularly fit. I too was in the military, 7 years in the Marine Corps Reserve, and I've been taking taekwondo for almost 3 years now and I'm hardly the shining example of physical fitness.

Guys and girls, please DO NOT post ANY spoilers from upcoming episodes of the Walking Dead. Feel free to speculate all you would like, but if you actually KNOW any upcoming plotline, please keep it to yourself.
