The Walking Dead Season 3

This week's episode kinda dragged for me. Usually I watch the rerun after The Talking Dead (did they find the only 2 people not at the Oscars tonight, could have picked random people off the street and been just as entertaining) but had no interest in watching it again.

Got to say that Laurie Holden has a nice figure if that wasn't a stunt double :love I'm betting that she will be offed this season, doesn't seem like she wants to join back with the group, heck Merle is of more value now than her.

You mean body double. A stunt double is used for action sequences, a body double is used for scenes that require nudity or sex scenes. :p

You all can keep your forts and military bases; my group will be clearing out the Key's one by one; just have to wait for a Hurricane. Provided the zombies from Cuba don't start swimming, all we got to worry about is a bridge. Plenty of islands for everybody!

Seeing as how I've got a 2 hr headstart on ya making it to the Keys, and Homestead AFRB is on the way ... You may have to ask permission to enter the newly renamed "Angus Islands". :lol

I saw an article somewhere awhile ago with ideas for zombie proof places to live, not existing places but ideas for purpose built places and one of the best ideas that I saw was a barge train on a river. Think of it, what place would be safer from walkers and hostile humans ala the Governor then on a series of barges or boats attached to each other in the middle of a river? Of course this idea only really works on large river like you have in the Midwest and the East, I don't think that CA has any rivers where that would work well on. Add to that either a Marine Corps Amtrac or Navy LCU and you have and easy and relatively secure means of getting from ship to shore.

The river idea is less than ideal. You'd have to keep the barges moving if you plan to ever go ashore for supplies because you'll attract a lot of zombie attention lining the bank just waiting. Also, the bottom of the river is a constantly changing topography. Riverboat captains historically only worked a few mile stretch because it impossible for anyone to effectively know every hazard. There's also the possibility that the river is contaminated and unfit for drinking because of uncontrolled runoff. This also means any fish are likely inedible too.

I think I'd take my chances on land living in a secured location and running small raid parties ... My viking ancestors did a pretty good living that way. :behave

Is it me or is the Governors accent getting steadily worse as the episodes roll on? :lol When he says 'good work' to Milton after he rats on Andreas 'amazing' plan it sounds more like he says 'good walk'

I can see Herschel and Merle developing a mutual respect thing, perhaps we may see one of them lay down their life for the other at some point? For me their exchange was the best part of the episode.

Interesting pic about the Governor's weapon of choice on the first assault.

For some reason the Governor's tea guy reminds me of Smithers from the Simpsons. Yet another average episode after such a great start to the season.

One of the guest on Talking Dead called him Smithers.

I always go watch this with my dad and he was asking what happens when winter comes. If zombies are exposed to freezing temperatures does it kill them? Or could they freeze, thaw, then come back to life? Do the comics ever say anything?

Yes, the comics address them. The winter slows them down but does not "kill" them. In one scene in the comics, a walker was frozen solid and unable to attack but he was still grunting at the survivors as they passed. As soon as spring arrived, the walkers were back in full force.

The problem with the pic is that it's wrong on many counts ... But first what this got correct: It is a Steyr AUG (or replica) that ejects to the right.

I'm a left-handed shooter with extensive military training with rightside ejection rifles. Here's the mistakes:

1) In order to use your opposite side eye on either iron sights or optics you would need to rotate the rifle towards that eye. However, unless you sighted in the rifle with this position in mind, accuracy would be a significant issue ... As in, the approximate 100-120 yrd uphill shot through multiple fences with sharpshooter accuracy would be near impossible.

2) The eye relief for that scope is about 1-1.5 inches. That means that the further off the distance the less you can actually see, so at nearly 6 inches the Gov couldn't see anything but a somewhat blurry white dot ... No target acquistion at all.

3) Shooting a rightside ejecting rifle from a left handed position doesn't cause "hot brass" to go into your face. You will get a bit of unburnt powder and gas which is manageable with glasses. Even in full-auto mode the spent casings are ejected perpendicular to the barrel not to the rear. It'd be a pretty amazing feat to lose your eye this way. I'd certainly love to see a video of that. :popcorn

4) The idea that the Gov got some sort of "general sight picture" with a right-handed grip using his left eye is equivalent to throwing a dart at a Where's Waldo picture from 10+ feet away and hitting Waldo. It's so unlikely as to be considered improbable.

As much as I'm sick of the character Andrea, I kinda don't want her to die either. I dig Laurie Holden.

But yeah, if Merle can learn to be a team player, he'd be a huge asset. I think it'd be interesting to see him and Michonne get together.

Herschel is one of the few in the group that doesn't have a personal problem with Merle. Maybe he doesn't know the whole story about what happened to Glen and Maggie, or maybe he just has a more rational and forgiving attitude. He definitely sees the benefit to keeping Merle on their side ... Then again he wanted Tyreese's group to stay too.

Rick really screwed them and himself by forcing them out. Herschel or Glenn should've stepped up and housed them in a different block rather than kicking them out. :behave At least until Rick got his head right again.

Definitely. I think the problem with the group is that they've become so reliant on Rick to make all the decisions they no longer seem to be able to think for themselves anymore. Everything with them is to do whatever Rick says to do and not think twice about it even if they think that he's wrong and/or losing his marbles.

I don't know about that. I have a left handed buddy who was in the Marines and he would always tell me about how on the range he'd either get hit in the face by the ejecting brass or it would go down his blouse, it may not be with every shot but it didn't sound like it was a rare occasion either. But that's on an M16A2, other rifles may be different, esp. the Aug which doesn't have the M16s brass deflector.

Of all people, Carl was the first to say something to Rick and you can just imagine how that would feel hearing it from your own son. I know Herschel talked to Rick in the last episode, but he wasn't stern enough. Rick seems to be experiencing what used to be called "shell shock" and now is more commonly considered PTSD. When someone is experiencing this in the field you either kick them in the a** or ship them to a hospital. Some people can snap out of it (at least temporarily) like Rick did during the attack, but the stress of command will make any previous symptoms worse ... And it rarely ends well (in the real world). So, Herschel finally talking to Rick in the current episode is a good thing and a discussion the group needs to have before Rick kills them all (accidentally or otherwise).

Range shooting is a unique situation. Even RHs can experience getting hit by their own (or the next lanes) casings. I've put 1,000s of rounds through a variety of platforms (i.e. M9, M16A2, 92FS, AR-15, P-3AT, PF9, 10/22, Saiga 12, etc ...) and whenever I'm on an open outdoor range I've never been hit in the face by my own shells. I doubt I'm just lucky, but then everyone's experience is different.

My point is that plenty of LH shooters use rightside ejection guns (mainly because amibidextrous and leftside guns are rare) and don't "lose an eye" as the creator of the pic suggested. On the extremely rare instance that it might happen the potentially damaged eye would be the right; so the Gov would still be fine thanks to Michonne. :)
