The Voltron Force

So we all remember the Voltron Force do we not?

You know....

So my brother just recently bought the 1st Season of Voltron on DVD, as it was one of my favorite shows growing up. So I got to thinking...these costumes would be FUN AS HECK to replicate.

So that is my question to the Pro's out there. I'm taking classes at my college right now for Theater Design and Tech, and a few of the classes are, Intro to Costuming, Costume history, and yes...SEWING..

So for my Intro to Costuming we have to do a series of outfits for our Final. So I think I'm going to go ahead and give these a shot. Now the only thing is I am wandering what I should do for them. I was thinking vinyl, similar to the style used for the Power Ranger suits in the movie. But with this I'm wandering how to do the padding.
There is a comic book out that pretty much itterates the look I'm going for:

[attachmentid=11437]

[attachmentid=11438]

Now for the pads and such should I use foam on the inside and coordinating colors over the foam, sewn into the suit? or should I go ahead and do real armor pieces from plastic and attach them?

The foam will make it look similar to a padded suit, similar to Daredevil's, so that's why I'm leaning toward the true armor pieces. So what do you guys think would work best?

I like the idea of armor parts better.

Look on the "spiderham hype" web page for his BOTP suit. it reminds me of those.

Please post some pics when you get done :)

:eek *Cough Cough*

Those were the days. :p Man, I missed them as they used to be my 2nd most favourite show right after Captain Power in the days before I get to know Star Wars.

Anyhow, vinyl sound like an okay material to use if you are going for the shiny look. I saw online someone doing it and she used Lycra.

Do post some photos when you're done. :)

I would say base it on the comic versions, and make them two piece suits. Jacket and pants, with the padding being removable.

well, I would want to give them a sorta leather type look to them...thats why I figured vinyl...don't have the money to spend on a full leather suit, especially for my Intro to Costuming final project

I figured vinyl would be the best solution, as its cheap, somewhat breathable, and would give the same appearance as leather, but at a fraction of the cost... savvy?

yup. :)
Come to think of it I was thinking of that super-shiny "patent leather" stuff, but it's not like all vinyl is like that.

If you want a leather look, though, how about pleather?

just as long as it isnt the shiny black, im a goth social outcast pleather ;)

but yeah, I guess Pleather is what I was referring to, I thought it was a form of vinyl anyway

Yep, pleather sounds good... Also, I will follow the TimDrakeRobin idea.
A two-pieces suit, sounds more "logical" and it will look somewhat more "professional" (Why should I control a giant robot in a lycra catsuit? LOL :D )...
Just kidding ;)
A two-pieces suit, with a good padding (like a motorbike suit) and maybe a plastic protection for the arms will be great in person.

Roger that, I just got back from Army Drill, and need to get sew some patches on my class As for tomorrow...but I'm gonna do a few sketches of it, concept wise, and I'll throw em on here later, so you guys can get a feel for the idea...and then give me some critique on it.

Over here, we called that "Wet Look Vinyl" and it unfortunately have a lifespan of about 2-3+ years depending on how it's stored/worn.

The other type is what I refer to Matte Vinyl and it's slightly cheaper than the Wet Look one, slightly thicker and should have a longer lifespan. It's probably called Pleater in other countries or even fake Leather.

yeah, exactly...but i dont want it to have too much shine like im a crazy goth kid going to a bdsm convention or somethin...

LOL... I think MJ trends carries their colors in matte finish, too.

Pleather (or faux leather) comes also in a matte finish.
It is a kind of vinyl, but it looks more like leather, you could take a look at the denverfabrics.com site (under Vinyl > Faux leather > Rave > Artic white) to see a sample (or to order a swatch).
Hope this helps. :)
