The Thing

I got back from seeing the prequel too. Not great, but it honestly wasn't that bad.

In fact, on the way home, I thought of another Thing related costume you could try. You'd need to get a pair of those clear protective goggles and install some bright LEDs into the sides, get yourself an Arctic suit and a parka. That way, at conventions, when someone asks to take your picture, you can stop and pose, recreating this poster image from Carpenter's The Thing.

Actually, someone at the Outpost #31 website posted this display that was made by a local video game store for the 2003 release of The Thing video game, which is the closest to what I sort of picture in my head as to what a costume of the poster image could look like (without the smoke, obviously).

I picked up a leather jacket in the same color as MacReady's jacket for about $16 from a thrift store. It's not the same style flight jacket that he wears, but its similar enough to use on a budget. Now just gotta get the flight jacket and make the flamethrower unit.

Hey everyone! It's been a while since anyone posted in here, so I thought I'd resurrect this topic. lol

I've been letting my hair grow out for about a year now, along with letting the beard grow too. I always tell everyone I'm going for the 80's Kurt Russell look. hahaha I love John Carpenter's The Thing, and have always enjoyed MacReady's character. So about 2 weeks ago I went ahead and bought a Schott Bombers Jacket off ebay. It's the same kind Kurt Russell wears in the film, I'm a stickler for accuracy. lol

Of course when it comes to accuracy I'm having the hardest time locating the kind of flight suit MacReady wears in the film! I keep looking at the Vietnam era flight suits but none have the zippers on the legs where they need to be. All I really know is that it's a pre-Velcro flight suit. There are buttons on the waist, for the waist band, and buttons on the sleeves. So this is definitely throwing me thru a loop. Could it be possible that it's not even an American flight suit?

Any help, or additional information is definitely appreciated!

Thanks!

James

It's hard to say if the flight suit is American or if its not. In fact, these days, finding a vintage flight suit is least likely to occur and you're more likely to find more modern ones at thrift stores. You could try eBay, but when it comes to films prior to the 1990s, finding information about costumes are slim (unless it was a popular franchise like Star Trek or Star Wars). The only other option I can think of is looking for a military expert who may be familiar with various flight suits. But then again, there's some military people here on the RPF that may be able to help out in this question.

For me, I found a modern flight suit that I decided would be best to have instead of not having a flight suit at all. In fact, I did a detailing thread called My Not-So-Screen-Accurate R.J. MacReady from The Thing costume thread, that not only covers my no-so-screen-accurate costume, but provides detailed information about other parts of the costume. So, if you need any other information about anything else, you can check it out there.
