The Thing

I would stay FAR away from Barons their Customer service is horrible. :unsure

I know I just got my "Kolchak" from them and I will never be doing business again with them.

You misquoted the price on that hat also it is $998.00 to over $1700.00 :lol for that hat depending on the Materials used and if you want it aged.

You are quoting the payment plan price.

Campaign Hat with the front, back and sides folded up. What brand and model is unknown. However, there is a company that has made a replica of the hat called "The R.J.", but its cost is between $250 and $425 (depending on what material you decide to go with and if you want it appeared to be aged or not). Here is the website for that company and hat.

Okay, sorry about that. My bad. Still, pretty damn expensive.

So... Any ideas on an el-cheapo campaign hat, preferably something that is close but doesn't cost over $30 to get?

I didn't have any bad customer service experience with them when I got my Kolchak, but they are pricey!

Still haven't seen the remake, only the original 1951 version. Anytime I hear about the new prequel they make it sound like there was never a 1951 movie, like when they talk about the "original" movie, ie John Carpenters, this is a sequel to. Although from what I hear, John Carpenters followed the book more faithfully.

Dude, you haven't seen Carpenter's version? I highly recommend it. In fact, I'm making it a requirement (it's Number 14 on MSN's Parallel Universe's 50 Greatest Science-Fiction Movies of All Time). Go to Netflix and order it to see it, or go to Amazon.com and buy it (trust me, one of the best buys ever). That way, if you decide to go see the prequel, you can watch Carpenter's film right after that (or even before it if you so choose).

Hmm... This actually provides an interesting opportunity for me. I think I will buy the DVD, then watch it after I see the prequel. Should be interesting.

:eek You need to see Carpenters version before you post in this thread again! ;)

I mean really! :lol

They have a sister chain called Party City, you have one of those close by?

Party City I know of. I know there's one in Tallahassee, which in a shopping center near where the Toys 'R' Us is still located, both those areas are across the road from the Governor's Square Mall. Next time I go to Tallahassee, I'll check there. In the mean time, I'll check a few of the flea markets in my area, as well as some of the thrift stores too (in fact, I found a vender at the Lake Park Flea Market that sells some clothes, including coveralls and what appeared to be several flight suits).

The Campaign Hat is the toughest part of the costume, because the one in the movie is entirely unique in that it has a 5" brim and a six inch peak. Now Campaign Hats are a dime a dozen, but with a 3" brim and a shorter peak. The best bet would be to get a hat thats as close as you can get, and have it modified.

And yes, YOU NEED TO SEE THE 82' VERSION!!!

It's not a sombrero. Its a Campaign Hat, like drill instructors wear, only with the front, back and sides folded up.

Actually, no it's not. The brim is much too wide. What it is is a Montana peaked cowboy hat:

Rocky Mountain Ranger - The Last Best Cowboy Hat.

To me, it looks like this, but with the Montana peak bash. Campaign hats are smaller in dimension.

Now, I could be wrong, is there any official source on the hat?

You can, but this thread is The Thing. although I posted pictures depicting Kurt Russel's character, it can be any character depicted in the films. I think one of the main attributes to these costumes is the flame thrower. Although I won't see the prequel till tomorrow morning.

Sorry, Trotsky, but that hat you linked is not like the one featured in the film. In fact, the peak's shape is different.

As far as I've been able to tell, the hat featured in the film is a campaign hat. Fans of the film have only been able to identify it as one and the Baron Californian Hats company that makes the replicas refer to the hat as a "mutated campaign hat." In comparison to other designs of other campaign hats, it does seem to match the typical campaign hat design, with the exception of the front, back and sides folded up.

Okay, I just finished watching the Prequel. Very nicely done. You can tell straight away that the maker of this film was a huge fan of the John Carpenter version. The continuity was excellent. No Spoilers, but don't rush out of your seat when it's over!

I bet one of our own John Penman could make the hat.

Would you suggest watching John Carpenters first or see this first?

Well, if you watch either one, it's going to spoil the other one anyway. But I definitely recommend watching Carpenter's film (as I myself haven't seen the prequel yet. Was suppose to today, but may end up going tomorrow). The film is one of the best sci-fi horror movies and certainly shouldn't be passed up.
