The Star-Lord/Peter Quill Sling Bag thread

Thanks so much zlurpo! if you have any other links to the bag components like straps and whatnot can you please share?

I for sure will, but I don't know anything else yet. I haven't sourced most of the bag yet.

That looks great, but I'm curious, have you tried Birchwood Casey gun blue? It should work on the carbon steel same as regular steel, and if you buffed it ack off of the raised areas, you'd get the exact look I think. That's my plan anyway.

Here's my attempt at the bag. I screen printed the fabric. I let the pattern dry for a few days and then I put the cloth into the sink full of water and wet-sanded it with 60 grit sand paper. Then after that dried, I ironed out all the wrinkles, which also helped heat set the screen printing ink. The bag is by no means accurate in terms of dimensions (other than the rivets and oval grommets). I mainly eye-balled the dimensions and drew it out on a big piece of paper.

In terms of sewing the bag, it was all just a hope and a prayer that it would come out right. I don't know proper techniques for making bags. This was my first time really using a sewing machine. My biggest fear was sewing it and flipping the fabric right-side out and discovering that I sewed it on backwards! Luckily that didn't happen! :) I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Time to make some straps!

That Birchwood Casey Gun Blue sounds interesting. But I just looked it up and it says it doesn't work on stainless steel. :(

Not sure if bluing the carbon would really yield the desired results, but I'm curious to see someone try it.

Nice job on the bag Ninja!

Can we see the back and the inside, please? This rocks!

Apologies if you've already answered this, I got excited. Would you post a pattern for your bag project? Or, at least the trapezoid parts. Very nice work! The symmetry is spectacular.

Made some more progress on my bag last night:

After getting everything scaled correctly I cut my shapes out of some thick interfacing. Then I cut and wrapped my fabric. To adhere the fabric I used spray mount. Worked like a charm!

Here's the smallest section along with the hardware pieces:

I cut out the grommet shape with an x-acto and bent the flanges with a pair of flat nose pliers. Then pressed it flat by hand. This metal is very malleable and easy to work with:

About an hr later I had all 7 panels completed!

I didn't have any leather straps on hand, so I just used a piece of elastic and loosely set everything out to get a general idea of how everything was looking:

Ahh, very cool! Looks pretty involved inside there, heh! Any plans for a liner at all?

Yup, I'm planning on putting in a liner. Endless Wonder posted a picture from the movie of the actual liner back on the 7th page of this thread. I know the actual liner is a dark color...possibly maroon or brown(?)...but I have this really nice piece of tan suede that would be oh-so-comfy inside of there...it's a little tempting. The OCD in me is telling me to go back to Joann Fabrics and find something that is more accurate. :p

Have we determined how many pockets or openings this thing has yet? I'm still not sure if it's 1 or 2. One at the very top along the seam and then the the one with the leather flap or overhang.

It seems kind of odd to have just the overhang flap part be the only opening, it would create a bunch of wasted space not to mention it wouldn't close then. Anyone else thinking the same or differently?

I believe the consensus is that there is 1 opening in the bag, which is along the seam. The leather flap appears to be purely cosmetic. If you take a look at this picture, you can see that the front fabric is directly sewn to the leather flap, which doesn't allow for an opening in there. It looks like it is simply folded over the front.

It does look like there is a second compartment behind the trapezoids. I wonder if there is also another underneath the leather flap. It's possible.
