The Revision Project

This is a thought game a hypothetical and conceptual brainstorming session if you will. No rules and no limitations save for what is listed in the following descriptive paragraph. Ready? Here we go.

"You have been given a simple task from a production company. They want to purchase an old or recent story be it from cinema, television, novel, or any media. They want a proposal for concept, the iconic hero prop or costume; what changes you may make, and lastly would you want to remake or rework the script in a reboot that will keep the heart of the story but take it into a new direction."

Now for a moment let's not think with western concepts of canon and flow. Instead let us look at eastern themes from Japan and other countries in which it is common place to revision and play with the presentation of a story. For example we can look at the divergent paths of Full Metal Alchemist, Star Blazers, and other such series. We're not discussing how to dismantle or destroy what someone else has created. Instead we are talking about taking their concept and influence and paying respect to it, either by modernizing it to fit our world, or add to their creation with our own thoughts and breath new life into it. After all fantasy - as all media is - is what lurks in our imagination, our hearts, and our soul.

Essentially what I'm getting at is this. I don't mean disrespect to the original creators and I'm not trying to say "I can do it better," nor do I hope anyone does. What I want is to expand upon our favorite realms and make them more visceral to us and others by sharing our own ideas and concepts. After all isn't that why we do what we do?

As for my answer to this equation or I should say one answer to this equation I would want to take a second look at "The Fox and Hound." Not as an animated movie but a play on realism and CGI-fantasy of the type present in Hop or the more recent Alvin and the Chipmunk movies. The story is so heart-warming and sweet that it doesn't need to be retouched beyond an updated look and presentation.

I would keep them as they are presented in the original because it creates that stark contrast to which they aren't human but what they are experiencing is something all people and even animals must endure. The agony of differing ideals, race, and the struggle to find equality and ultimately friendship.

The second I shall toss in would be Nolan Batman. I would love to take the concept of the Nolan presentation of Batman and Joker and expand upon it with the character Harley Quinn. I would set it some time after the events of Dark Knight allowing the Joker to settle from his raw and unyielding chaos to having just a touch of control as he is presented in Tim Burton's Batman. Young enough to still have that explosive fury but matured to have learned the ways of being more cunning and manipulative. I was such a fan of Heath Ledger's presentation I don't desire to see another actor to ever attempt to replace him. Instead, I want to see them evolve the presentation he crafted.

For his "hero" prop I would craft a crude and wicked custom ballistic knife. Even though he won't kill you until he looks into your eyes and holds you you can't get away. A ballistic knife would bridge that concept of which you may run but no matter how far you go if he wants you to die by his blade you will. It's less a knife than it is a spear in those regards and if played right one could create a powerful mix of story. Imagine Batman trying to pull away only to be caught in the side by the Joker's spear as he ascends to try escape. A loss that could be equated to the Nolan Batman's continual portrayal of Bruce as the phoenix who dies and is reborn. A cities savior who the city and it's leaders don't want. It would hold the potential to be a powerful visual that could almost need no dialogue at all.

Regardless, what are some of your thoughts? What would you want to do in the aforementioned scenario?
