The Q-Boat: Shaken not Stirred

Hi all, I wanna show you some progress on my latest creation, the Q-Boat from the 007 movie ‘The World Is Not Enough’

It is going to be a tribute to the late Desmond “Q” Llewelyn, also known as Major Boothroyd.
Q Branch is one of the reasons why I started with this hobby, making/collecting props and models.
I’ve met Desmond Llewelyn (and his wife) back in 1999 at the premiere and millenniumparty in Amsterdam, a few weeks later he died in a car crash

The plan is to make a (rc) boat (with working torpedo's) that runs about 30 km/h on the water, the boat is 1/6 scale.

I also wanna use a Pierce Brosnan puppet from Sideshow Collectables, it would be great to place him in this boat

That puppet really need a better paint job. He looks way to plastic. Good work on the boat.

Re: A Tribute to Desmond "Q" Llewelyn

Thanks, yeah the puppet looks a bit plastic and too shiny.
New paintjob and he’s ready to go

Re: A Tribute to Desmond "Q" Llewelyn

Oh... Jeebus. I thought you were making a full sized one for a moment.

I don't know how you guys just build stuff from scratch. It's freaky.

Wow, this is awesome. I've loved that boat and that sequence since I first saw the movie. Great job so far!

Thanks a lot guys (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

I just received my 007 (and 006) puppet, he fits perfect in the boat.

Wow, thats amazing if you give the doll...err... puppet a tie, instead of the bowtie he's wearing it will be perfect!

Man you should be a boat builder, just scale it up!

Re: The Q-Boat: A Tribute to Desmond "Q" Llewelyn

Thanks, yeah you’re right, I need to change the bowtie for a normal tie.

The construction of the boat is done, now I’m gonna turn my attention to the detail work, the dashboard (with working display), a mechanism for the torpedo’s, spoiler, and off course the RC equipment.

Re: The Q-Boat: A Tribute to Desmond "Q" Llewelyn

Are you going to cast the parts in fibreglass, or waterproof the wood construcion that you have already?

Re: The Q-Boat: A Tribute to Desmond "Q" Llewelyn

Thanks a lot guys (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Looking great, are you going to add the wing on back?

Yes, I call it a spoiler

Are you going to cast the parts in fibreglass, or waterproof the wood construcion that you have already?

I used some polyester/fibreglass at the front of the boat (the hull), just for strength and a smooth finish. I used (3 layers) boat varnish to protect the wood against the water, I also used (2 layers) black schoolboard paint as a basecoat, very strong and durable paint.

Re: The Q-Boat: A Tribute to Desmond "Q" Llewelyn

Currently working on some details, still a lot to do before this boat hits the water. Hope he’s not gonna sink

It was extremely difficult to make the hull, it is not 100% accurate, but its good enough for me.

Next update, ASAP :thumbsup
