The Old Republic Darth Malgus Costume Progress

Great to see you post ov er here :) Yep that's me doing the Shae Vizla costume. I wish there was a same sort of character renders for her but there are at least several incarnations to work from (art, trailors and statues).

Good luck on the body casting! I'm still trying to save up for a head cast ;)

Thank you Djymm for the link. Beautiful work so far mdb.
Really looking forward to the progress on this one.

How about the body suit material? Do you think it is leather just like Darth Vader, or is it a different material?

Ah 3d graphics.. and designers who, naturally, don't have hands on experience with making costumes... I'd look at a stretch matte vinyl to allow for the full range of movement. With all the seams it is possible to use only a 2way stretch (you cut the pieces on the bias alternating direction for each panel to reduce twist) which is more likely to have a leather textured surface but there is four way available at one of the big stretch fabric online stores. Stretchhouse or spandexhouse. Two textures or colours for the vertical and horizontal seaming though.

I will be making mine from weird rubber coated heavy fabric, the same as I used for Samara, as it is a sports fabric and looks as heavy duty as it is. The leather bits I'll be making from the same faux suede I made my Leia boots from :) It has a great texture and looks like the real deal. I have seen some nice "waxed" faux suede that looks a lot like the stuff used for the horizontal sections pieces in the trailor, though the texture is different in the renders.

Oh I wish I had your sewing skills. I do have a sewing machine though, so I suppose I should start practicing.

Also, Vagabond, I hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread. If you do, I will go elsewhere. I just thought we could compile all the resource information in one thread.

I don't really right now I'm working on researching the suit as much as I can, heck one of my bedroom walls is covered in reference photos. The headcast got done and I'm planning to do the full body lifecast in stages that way I won't feel like a statue. I would post images of my positive and where I am so far on clay progress on the mask but my camera is broken and I need to get it in the shop.

I'm even trying to sell some Quarian Helmets from Mass Effect to fund my project a little and for those really I'm just selling them to pay some for the materials used.

this could be amazing, or fail hard.
i really hope you can pull it off, because it's a VERYVERY detailed costume, and could be very impressive.

I cant wait to see how this turns out!

Altough..is it just me...or int he first pic..is there a wierd "Malak and Vader's outfits had a baby" thing going on...?

Yes that's what a lot of people have thought so far, I think if this makes it to D*C 2011 I wonder how many people will call me Malak and how many will mistake me for Vader lol.

If you read the first chapter of the Deceived book, you will see that his breathing mask makes noises much like Vaders.

Despite the similarities, it's still an awsesome costume. Way more detailed than Vaders too, but unfortunately only those of us on the RPF will notice, and yes, you will be Vader to 90% of people that see you.

Even Star Wars fans will think you are Vader without his mask, just like in Return of the Jedi. Oh well. I get mistaken for Bigfoot in my Chewie costume all the time. It comes with the territory.

I'm loving all of the "The Old Republic" costumes, I think it shows what a good job Blur studios did in creating the trailers.

Here's my firt progress picture of the mask, I still have a lot of work that I am going to be doing to it then I will work on the tube that is connected to the mask and goes around his head, the head/shoulder cast came out well, but to really work with the clay I had to remove it from the plaster head and work with it on a piece of foam board. The type of clay I am using is Van Aken Non-Sulphur Oil Based clay. I'll work more on it tomarrow this was just after 30 minutes of work tomarrow I plan to work on it half the day at least.

Any progress yet?
I am eagerly awaiting more progress and pics i really like this project.

Thanks Zaxmon but I already have tons of ref pics including pics that Bioware supplied me with, the old mask thats up a few posts I turned that back into a slab of clay again but right now I've got 4 commissions I'm doing for people including two iron man suits I'm building within two months so no time for this at the moment.

What do you mean Bioware supplied you? Care to share?

3rd Photo Down on my first page but I also have more but I would rather not get into trouble with them. All I did was e-mail them asking for reference renders of Malgus. Altogether they gave me 20 reference images but I would rather not get on their bad side by sharing too much.
