"The Office" opening sequence door sign

So "The Office" is one of my favorite shows, and I've always wanted to make a replica of the door sign at the begnning of each episode. The sign is never seen in its entirety, only the right side , then camera quickly pans left to "The Office." Here's a splice of two shots I took of my TV screen.

On Google Images there are similar splices, but IMO the left & right sides are too close together for my personal taste. I have higher-res versions of the original L & R shots if anyone would like to use them for tracing. Sadly, I am not skilled enough in Photoshop or Illustrator to pull it off.

If anyone else is interested in this too, I'd love to get a graphic file that I can take to a trophy or sign shop so I can have it engraved in black acrylic with a white engraving substrate. Does anyone know what the "real world" dimensions of the sign should be? It seems to be mounted on a standard sign frame with rounded edges with double-sided tape in the back.

Thanks!

Dan

I think you would need to nail down the desired dimensions before anyone would want to tackle it. That said, it wouldn't be too hard. The font dosen't look anything special, maybe from the Helvetica font family.

Score!!!

Happy my gut was right about the proportions - it's apparently an industry standard: 3" x 9"

The framed signs can be bought for as little as a buck. The letters and graphics look silk-screened on, not etched in acrylic - either would work if someone could do a one-off and not require a large minimum order quantity. But if this turns into a run, I suppose I could order a quantity from one of these outfits:

Both are local to me.

Graphics gurus, please step up!!! :D

Awesome! I literally just got done making one of these too. Found an image online, printed out, traced onto aluminum adhered with 3m spray, and used doming epoxy as a laminate.

That was of course after I saw that NBC sells them, just wanted to see if I could create one.

They also sell prop replicas of:
Warehouse shirts
Dunder Mifflin Trophies
Various Pam paintings,
etc

DOH! Why didn't I think of going to the NBC Store... :lol

Still, the "official" sign has a slightly off-centered right hand side graphic, and apparently no frame. I live near the Universal Studios City Walk, so I'll check it out, but if it doesn't meet my stringent quality standards, my offer remains open!

I know this thread is old. But does anybody know whether the sign NBC sells is clear through? I'm thinking of buying the sign and putting a light that flashes inside it. Will the light come through the whites in the sign?

Thanks,
Larry

Judging from the photos on the NBC site, and on how real signs of that nature are made, the answer would be no. Real signs like that are a clear plastic with black paint on the back and the white is printed on the front face of the sign. So the black would prevent light from shining through the sign.

That said, I am not really sure what you meant by putting a light inside the sign since they are less than 1/4" thick (it's been a while since I made mine so I forget, but I think the plastic is only 1/8" thick or so). If you simply want to put a light behind the sign then I could likely make you one where the black paint on the back is masked off appropriately and use some vellum or something as a backer for the white so that the white would light up. I think I still have some vinyl cutouts that I could use as a paint mask.
