The Martian Space Suit

Is the font not the "Nasalization" font used elsewhere on the suit? It looks like a slightly more "bold" version of the font.

Yes of course it is, silly me :p
Now to the decals, I'm gonna have a closer look later on and try locating how many different decals are on the suit including printed text on the neoprene.

My brother gave me the idea to make tin casts of the spanner screws which would make it way cheaper than buying the actual screws. They're like 30€ for a pack of 10 over here, with that many screws on the suit there's no way I'm gonna get it done.

Once we get a better idea on the exact size for the screws, we could put a bulk order in to a manufacturer and get them pretty cheap. From what I am seeing they will only cost a few cents each. Minimum orders tend to be 1000 or more. But if people are willing, it will be cheaper than trying to buy them locally.

What size do we thing the head is, and how long might we need them? Maybe 3/8" long or so?

I'm thinking it's in metric since Janty Yates (costume designer) is British and she used the british Wild Country Vision for the harness.

The screws I ordered were the M3 10mm size and eyeballing it they look close enough.

But I would definitely be interested in signing up for a MassDrop of security screws if they're a close enough match.

I picked these up off of eBay a couple months back. I think they are 12mm. Good for some of the larger screws, but the hardware pieces will require much smaller versions, like 4mm. I haven't been able to find any that small.

I'm almost done building my Cobblebot 3D printer but it's going to take some time since it's my first printer. Fortunately there's a 3D printing community workshop near by where I can go to learn about 3D printing.

Regarding the screws, according to the specs of this screw (linked below)its head size is .205" which is around 5mm. Thats right in the range (or as close as I can find in my research) Soulinertia was looking for, I mean the difference between 4mm and 5mm isn't enormous, and it seems like any prop department would use what was easily purchased for most hardware, they are probably just the smallest commonly available snake-eyes. I mean if i was doing this stuff professionally just go into a hardware store and grab whatever looked right and not think twice about it.

Also, here is the company that makes, and I believe has the patent on, snake eye/spanner screws. It appears as though you can get a quote for bulk purchase directly through them, which may provide a lower price per unit than what is available via a retailer.

More reference coming out, these are screen shots from a behind the scenes video released.
Collar Ring.jpgCollar spacer.jpg
First shot shows the collar ring as I correctly figured out, not connected to anything. The second shows what appears to be some type of foam collar insert(kind of like a airplane pillow), it fits in between the collar and the wearer's neck, helps secure the helmet to the actors head, it's not in every shot so it may have just been used in the storm scenes to seal the helmet from the dust.

Has anyone identified the specific underarmour training gear used in the training video? Looks generic, but I might get some.

The neckring confused me the first time I saw it. "That would never be airtight" woops, forgot it's a movie... Then I amused myself wondering how the crew could breathe the martian athmosphere :)

I've only found ~$30 coveralls from Walmart that are only somewhat similar in that they're grey and have slash zip pockets (but going the wrong direction).

I think what I'm gonna do is find a soft shell jacket that has the zipped slash pockets and sew on the patches and use it as a regular jacket rather than a flightsuit.

Man, it is difficult to find a grey flight suit when you're a big fellow. Only thing I'm finding is $170 and that's a hard pill to swallow.

What about getting a regular green or black one and blessing/dyeing it grey?
