The Martian Space Suit

I bought some fake leather upholstery on ebay for the tiny orange strap bits, the price was fair and delivery wasn't too much so I got two meters,.
Way way too much leather,. haha,. I totally miscalculated. So I'll probably see if I can get some kind of raster mask going and paint it and use it for some of the other orange bits. I dunno, Would be very clammy and non stretchy.

Cheers @imgill very nice information. Anything else you learned about the costume while on set? Anything you feel ok telling us that is :)

Oh, and I just learned that The Martian will be the closing movie for BIFF.no the filmfestival in my town on the 30. september.

Lol,. a whole three days before the normal premiere,. I initally thought it was longer,..

New little videos posted by the official facebook page. Couple of notes - the snoopy hood isn't a full balaclava like I had thought but only goes around the jaw / base of the head.

Also confirming what I've been working out - that the chest plate is very thin and mostly flat.

Great reference for the GoPro arm and the backpack. Too bad we can't get our hands on those 3D models.

Good starter shape

Nice find!

Also just realized, the EVA suit breach kits are located on the helmet in the book. The small boxes on the helmet in the film could be two breach kits, with a functional light on them. Unless of course they scrap the idea of a breach kit.

Maybe they relocated the patch kit to an area of the suit not on the helmet, or maybe it is in the little box/light unit. The patch kit seems like it comes up frequently enough in the book that omitting it completely would change some of the storyline... not enough to completely ruin things, but I am thinking about the airlock sequence in particular because in the book the adhesive is integral to him repairing both the suit and the airlock. From the trailer it does appear as though he wont be cutting his arm off though, as there is a shot of him "repairing" the faceplate with duct tape.

"Yes, of course duct tape works in a near-vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped"

Found out yesterday that I've ordered the wrong Wild Country harness. If we look on the bright side though: I have the HY-8 tubes from Cool Shirt which is awesome. I feel kinda bad about having to cut it up to make it look like the loose tubes on the suit because the spring action disconnect mechanics of it is incredible imo.

And the insulation that comes with it would look good in and of itself but I'm going for screen accuracy.

I just want to know who will be the first person to do the "Duct Tape Helmet" variant costume?

Also, i want to see somebody try to use duct tape while wearing gloves. The Duct Tape Glove challenge shall commence!

I'm aiming for MegaCon 2015. Anyone is welcome to get a group together.

Glad I was correct that it was neoprene. Looks like it falls like it for sure.

Still working with a modeler to get the armor and helmet perfect. Then off to the printers

My goal is a bit further ahead, I'm aiming for ComicCon Stockholm 2016 giving me a year to complete this. I need it too since my monthly budget isn't very large :p

If anyone is making near screen accurate (or actual) 3D models for various parts, including the helmet, I'm very interested in printing it. I don't have my printer up and running yet though since it's a DIY kit.

I have been working on a 3d model of the helmet, It is difficult to build a model based on photos, without any frame of reference to use for determining the dimensions. So this is all guess work.

The surface details are secondary at this point, I am just trying to get the shapes and proportions right. The model is currently broken up into 6 parts.

Booooom. Haha great work so far man can't wait to print this

It's not an easy helmet to model with the current reference material. But you've done very well. Nice work.

The one I modelled I tried to implement the domes that I was going to get,. My initial plan was to build it in foam and acrylic on top of a donor helmet,.
It all the photos they tend to wear the helmet in an angle that confuses me on guessing the dimensions.

Btw: would people be interested in building a reference page kind of like studiocreations dredd page? Maybe if therpf had a wiki system of some sort.

Wow! That looks awesome. Any chance you'll upload the model when you've got it tweaked to perfection?

I'm taking a vacation this week but I think I'll have some down time to work on a model for the chest and back pieces. I hope to use them at least for reference for my build.

Once I get it to a point that I feel it is as good as I can get it with limited reference, I may release it, I have already promised it to some Members of the RPF. Here's the latest refinements, I like the direction it's going, the 3d cgi crew videos really helped to get the shape closer to the real helmet.

Any body with access to the helmet prop, could you please just give me the overall dimensions of the dome, I still feel mine is not egg shaped enough.

Amazing work there, captain. I'm trying to figure out the material used for the webbing. The way it gets narrower reminds me of seat belts but the webbing itself looks nothing alike. I also noticed a pretty sloppy but insignificant work on the red outline of the webbing shown in the pictures.

And for the valves.. well.. my samples of the M3 security screws are in and they weren't cheap. This is a problem since the suit seems to be full of them with 4 on every shoulder/knee pad, on some of the buckles and now noticing that each valve has five of them each :p

matt-damon-the-martian-valve.jpg

I'm not entirely positive that I could get away with using M3 screws but to my eyes they look close enough.

Edit:
I still don't have the buckles but I know that getting them would give me enough size reference for the screws.

My initial thought on the grey stripe going from the shoulders to the wrist was that it was some kind of webbing sewn between or on top of the neoprene suit but the way it behaves in light and how it folds got me convinced that it's also neoprene.

The camera is probably a GoPro Hero 4 but I like their new smaller and lighter Session camera so much that I'm gonna use that one instead despite it not being accurate to the film.

Edit:
Well I'll be damn.. found a good picture of half of the camera and GoPro Hero 3 confirmed. And I just sold mine yesterday because I thought I never use it :/

I considering getting a GoPro but I don't think I could justify a $500 camera for such a small part of the costume.

Anybody else have hi-res images of the feet? Specifically the straps that hold on the ankle armor? The picture above seems to be the best angle so far.

Just curious, of what use would a terran-synchronized watch be? Wouldn't it be more useful to have a watch that kept track of Sols, and such?
