The Mandalorian: DarkSaber reference thread

I went ahead and ordered that lamp to see how the size is, maybe its workable as a good base saber. I've got no doubt Hasbro is already working on a black series version, but i still want this.

This is the cheapest ive found.

I did some mathing and figured out if the whole lamp, including the base is 24" tall, this lamp hilt is 8.6" tall. Without the base its closer to 9". I'll know soon.

Also...ENHANCE. Theres something super interesting going on inside that emitter.

Got the lamp today. It’s definitely about 20% too small but maybe this would still be useful reference. The little thing near the pommel is only on the one side. I'll also mention that the handle isnt a perfect cylinder, its more of an oval, where the straight on view is the thinner profile.

Found this thread while looking for a model to print as my Reddit Secret Santa match mentioned making a Bo Katan cosplay outfit and we all know she needs to have the Darksaber for that costume to be complete.

I purchased the STLs from the Etsy store of (I think) guabe as linked in this thread (great work on the design considering when you released it vs what images and footage we had). I decided to design up the blade to be printed in pieces out of clear Nylon that will get cloudy after sanding away layer lines (hate working with acrylic). I designed a channel to run EL wire in two paths along the inner perimeter to get a more even glow over LEDs, and a small 3mm threaded rod up the spine between the wire paths to give strength. Finally, while the show's version of the blade doesn't appear to have too much of the glowing static, I decided to model in some so that once the blade is assembled and glued together (200mm pieces to fit on a most beds), the flat portions can be sanded smooth and then black paint, ebony rub 'n buff, or applied black vinyl wrap with the static areas cut away with a sharp knife can be added to complete the look.

I am still printing out the parts for the hilt and will then tweak the end of the blade piece to fit snuggly into the emitter end. I won't have time before I need to ship this gift to modify the emitter to the more pill shaped ports on the side and the rounded face of the emitter, but the final product will still be plenty good for a cosplay.

Rendered out the blade with emissive lighting materials and added in the parts of the design by guabe that I have already tweaked based on the Paul Ozzimo drawing posted above and the matching details on the toy/lamp (namely added the small trapezoid bump on bottom of handle with a socket head screw as the small hexagon shape to attach the end cap, added a hole to the end cap for a D-ring/belt clip, and removed the rocking switch and replaced with another, single raised strip terminating into the concentric rings on the handle, then put in a circular hole for a button to be wired to the EL wire battery pack). I also tweaked the guard to have the small pill-shaped items on the top and bottom center near the edge and tweaked the grooves a little.

The emitter would need to be an almost complete redesign and with the time crunch I am under to finish printing, post-process, paint, wire, and ship before the holidays, I think my Secret Santa recipient will be getting the design as made by guabe. I may try to redesign if I make my own down the road (or gladly buy an updated design when posted to support the efforts done already by others).

For finishing, I am thinking taking ques from the Ozzimo rendering and doing smooth, shinny black for the base metal (like painted or anodized metal) with possibly textured paint or maybe even a textured rubber or leather for the raise grip details.

Here is the final, post processed print for my Reddit Secret Santa gift. The blade design is still a work in progress so I am sending them a note that once done, I can send them the blade or share the files if they want to make their own. The EL wire was not as.bright as I had hoped so I am redesigning to work with strips of LEDs instead.
