Jeez...Down Periscope. There's a title I haven't heard in a good long time. I worked on that. And Titanic. And X-files. Gaaahhh.
Actually, the two miniature subs for Down Periscope were just gorgeous. I believe both were around 1/35th scale - 10' long. The Gato class sub started off as an RC kit. All we used was the hull. The conning tower, deck, guns, and all the running gear were scratchbuilt by a guy named Mike Possert. Beautiful work. Shot the stuff dry for wet. Real pain to get everything filmed.
As usual, the movie tanked - but we had fun working on it. I still have a copy of the modern sub's sail (which goes back to the Hunt for Red October molds).
Fox still has the models (as best as the archives people can figure), though they are likely in Florida at Planet Hollywood or in one of their storage facilities down there.
