The Last of Us HBO Joel Thread

THANK YOU!
I got you.

Btw, the Dakota shirt I purchased does NOT have the correct buttons.

The shipping service sent me photos of the shirts I bought before they ship them to me!

So I bought a 3 pack of Dakota shirts off eBay that have the correct buttons!

Id like to think that this is the last Joel stuff I'll buy for a while, because well,.... this s*it is expensive.
What I'll likely do is take the buttons off these, and then get them sewn on to the dakota shirt.

Would you consider taking a spare button and putting it in a mold made out of lego or something cheap and then selling packs of buttons in black plastic or rubber? They would keep the Dakota engraving without the white so would end up being accurate to the ones on screen that are basically plain black (I think they have some of the brown horn pattern but barely) and would be good to throw on any close shirt.

This would be the most ridiculous thing in pursuit of accuracy but it looks like the shirt matches the screen used one except for the puckering (not sure that’s the right term) at the seams.

That can happen because of thicker fabrics gathering during stitching, like with denim and the pictured tan shirt for example, or from heat shrinking due to washing since the stitches remain in place but the fabric itself gathers around them.
Would be interested to see how the black shirt looks after you’ve thrown it in the washer and dryer (the one in the show is distressed slightly even before Abby does anything so I think they would’ve cycled the shirts a few times) since that would confirm if the black shirt will end up looking like on screen or they really did dye a tan shirt, maybe they aimed for green but ended up with black.

Gee when I got into doctor who cosplay a decade and a half ago and discussions on dyeing trousers happened I didn’t think the details of heat shrinkage on cotton seams would stick so well, but here we are it turns out to be slightly helpful so much later ahah

I'd have to see about this. I feel like that that would be a difficult endeavor to accomplish. I could try making a mold of one of the buttons in silicone, and then create a mixture in resin of a similar color, or the proper color, and then do it and now as I say it outloud, I could totally just do this hahahaha.

Just found black UV resin online. Let me see what the correct buttons looked like again.

Does the tan shirt also have a center pleat?
Did we confirm that Joel's on screen shirt has no pleat? And no, the tan one doesn't.

But as far as I'm concerned, this is Joel's death shirt, just another version of it (as in, it's probably the newest iteration, and we just missed the boat on the last one).

I had put some blurry screenshots earlier in the thread showing side pleats. Someone uploaded the scene in much higher definition though so here are better screenshots

Please if you don’t mind could you post a picture of the back of the tan shirt? If it has side pleats there’s a chance it’s that one and they dyed it. Especially that last screenshot lends itself to the idea since the stitching stands out a tad.

It's honestly still hard to tell that those are pleats. It honestly just might have been the way the shirt break happened on his shoulder, or with the addition of his t-shirt underneath it. The material also doesn't look like the tan one.

I had to leave that tan one at work, so I'll try to get a photo of it tomorrow.

This was asking about how you got the screenshots, not then I saw that you said how lol. Nevermind

They’re definitely pleats, no t shirt underneath or gathering would make even folds like that on both sides.

Ignore the arrow, this is from a thumbnail that had several, but you can see on another heavy fabric shirt with a shallow pleat the effect is the same. The YouTube video was 2160p and it’s clear they’re pleats.

Even when laying flat they’re there

Ah gotcha. It’s very possible that you can un stitch that back panel the top and flatten out the center pleat to create these two accurate pleats for screen accuracy. But other than that for that reason, you still have 80% accuracy with the current offering from Dakota at Marks (including factoring the buttons). It’s a bummer that it’s impossible to find.

I’m going to work on the resin mold now with silicone. Will keep you posted

lol btw, definitely a spoiler there! Hahaha

Btw, this would be helpful, but one of the breakdown artists let me in on a little bit of her process:
Breaking down items in the sun would be a lengthy process for sure! It varies a bit piece by piece, but generally a lot of washing to fade, soften and wrinkle the seams, then maybe a slight dye job to shift the colour into a more worn kind of patina, along with some sanding and painting. Acrylic paints, Golden, Kroma, Angelus mostly. Then some good old fashioned steaming to work in some wrinkles

Alright, I can confirm that the Death shirt has a side pleat. I got a short sleeve version of the Dakota (only older model available online) from a seller in Canada (unfortunately it’s not even the right color), but I made the sacrifice, and can confirm that the material feels very very similar to the newer Dakota WorkPro shirt on Mark’s. Get the shirt from Mark’s while you can.

The short sleeve shirt I got is obviously the wrong color (and wrong color buttons), but this is going to be a very real possibility guys.

Get the Mark’s Dakota WorkPro long sleeve like mentioned before, wait until I can make the buttons (resin is on the way) and then get the pleat adjusted to be like the one on this shirt/the OS one, and you’re solid (not including like 10 washes in the laundry).

Going to reach out to the manufacturer of the shirt (the actual Chinese factory).

Can someone please upload the highest qualities of the shirt that Joel is wearing (preferably 4K).

For obvious reasons, I will need the photos cropped just to show the shirt, and no part of Pedro’s face etc.

A couple pictures of Joels clothes in the next episode I saw online.
