The "I'm painting a Captain America Shield" thread

I have a question, but there are so many captain shield threads, I may have missed the answer.

Has anybody thought to make a mold of a metal shield and then pull casts of it in hard resin? It seems like it would be an ideal candiate, since the metal shields can be very expensive. Also all the necessary bracketing on the back could be cast with the shield as a single piece. Is this something that's doable?

It's doable, as we know they did it for the films, but I'm not sure that it would really be much less expensive than getting a metal one.

I believe someone stated the cost to create a mold would be high so much that it would rival the price of an actual spin aluminum blank.

So I got to about page 10 looking for an answer for my question, but I got lazy and just decided to ask :p So I'm Buying a shield blank soon and I was wondering how you guys taped off your circles? I know there are grooves, but how do you get perfect lines? I read somewhere that its Red-Red slope-no paint-no paint on slope- Then red again. How to you only fill half of the groove? I hope I'm making any sense...

Here's my technique: Best way I found to tape off the rings is to use a thinner cheap making tape. Not painters tape. And lay a piece gently across a "valley" and push the tape down into the valley with my thumbnail – sticking the tape to the walls of the valley. I do this all around the circle of the rings. Once the whole ring is taped I run a sharp exacto blade along the bottom of the valley – just let the tip ride along in the very bottom – and remove one side. It make a razor sharp paint line right at the bottom of the valley

That case is a Hardigg military case. I've been searching for one for my shield. Fairly expensive in those dimensions brand new.

Could you let me know what the dimensions are for the case or if you know the specific model number? Thanks in advance!

I'm not completely familiar with their numbering system. I pretty much just scanned eBay for the appropriate size. what is important is you will need to look at the inner dimensions of the case and not the outer dimensions. my shield is 25 inches in diameter as opposed to whatever size yours is so you may have to look for cases specific to the size of your shield.

I can tell you brand new versions of those cases are very expensive. usually $500 and up.

Has everyone seen that eFX have finally decided to come in out of the cold and start taking pre-orders on their long long awaited Captain America shield? $599

eFx Collectibles

They describe it as:

- Edition size limited to only 1500 pieces worldwide
- Full scale, accurate replicas of the 24" shield
- Master patterns cast from the original molds used to make the screen used props
- Quality fiberglass and metal construction
- Genuine leather straps
- Numbered metal plaque
- Prop Story/Certificate of Authenticity
- Wall mount display

Me? I'd sure like to see a boatload more photos before I judge. They're promising pics to their Facebook page:

Just FYI. I certainly have no involvement or stake in this at all. Just thought I'd post this, as it bears on all our efforts and interests here in Cap's shield.

While we're at it, does anyone have experience with making the leather straps completely movie accurate? It almost looks like there's two layers of leather that are stitched together to make it have a 'leveled' look. Since mine is going to weigh a gajillion pounds, I was thinking I'd reinforce it with a sandwiched layer of something to prevent leather stretch. Ideas?

I owe pretty much everyone who contributed to this thread a big thank you, Its an invaluable resource for anyone with a blank shield. I just wanted to share a couple pics that i posted on facebook but never got around to actually showing off here.

Ouch! Yeah, I just tried searching for one of the Hardigg cases and it was, in a word, pricey. Besides ebay, I started looking at some of the military surplus stores online. But it's like finding a needle in a haystack trying to match for the right dimensions. Staying vigilant though!

thanks again!

got my blank today from the same place as most of the rest of you guys ( wont name anyone specifically due to all the trouble with marvel cracking down, but you know who you are ) and i must say, it is a thing of beauty. I cannot wait to start layering some paint. Thanks for the contact DFanatic. Much appreciated.

Trying to get a hold of Chris Fields. My PMs go unanswered. Anyone have alternate contact info for him? Thanks.

I heard he does (did) a shield that had a star as part of the shield, as opposed to as an add-on. This seems to be the most movie-realistic.

Thanks for your help.

Been wondering about the recessed shield stars too.
