The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Post-release)

Ahhh! That was him?! I totally missed it, but I laught about the eyepatch

He was one of the Lakewood spies when they were signaling to sneak the dwarves in. He was the one with the eyepatch that flipped down who tapped the stilt of a house with what I think was a pipe.

One minor complaint - unless Smaug has a pretty good intelligence network going, he probably wouldn't have known Thorin's nickname of "Oakenshield," since that happened well after Smaug took over the lease in Erebor.

And he was asleep the entire time. Lol.

Yeah noticed that as well, though some of his other dialogue alluded to Sauron coming back, so I guess he may have been in contact with some of the Dark Lord's minions in this version.

Peter Jackson sure knows how to make a beautiful film. The LOTR trilogy and so far, both Hobbit movies have had some beautiful images in them.

I liked the second Hobbit better than the first, but I still feel much more unconnected to these movies than I do the original trilogy. Other than Oakenshield, I couldn't tell you another of the dwarfs names... at times, I found myself much more interested in what Gandalf was doing and found myself wishing they'd cut back to him.

My guess is Smaug likes diving and swimming in his gold, like Uncle Scrooge, he must have fallen asleep bathing in it !

So now that Gandalf has found Sauron, I wonder how this will play in a re-watch of Fellowship of the Ring when he was unaware of his rise in Mordor.

Saw it in HFR 3D which (IMHO) is almost a perfect (focus wise) environment. Liked it much better than Unexpected Journey. It could have been 15-20 minutes shorter for me.

I feel like Gandalf clearly knew Sauron still lived in FOTR. Perhaps his being driven from Dol Guldur happens in such a manner that it's unclear where he goes.

Wife and I saw it on Friday, and both really enjoyed it. Overall I thought it built on the first film quite nicely, and, though I liked the first, Desolation was an improvement to me. A few things that jumped out:

- Was pleasantly surprised that I liked Tauriel's character as much as I did
- Happy to see Legolas back in action, though he does look different than in LOTR (chuckled at the scene with Gloin, too)
- Wished there was more of Beorn
- Not a big fan of the dwarves/Smaug chase scene at the end
- Loved the Wood-elves' "city"

Can't wait until part three next year; it'll be a blast to watch these all together. :)

the dwarves Fight scenes were just beyond stupid for me. yes, you can make it playful in the barrels. But Smaug part was way over the top of craziness.

Didn't care for the Love triangle part. Its sad that the Studio uppers force Jackson into doing it. Yes, they had to redo scenes just for it. It was old and busted in the Lord of the Rings movies.

other than those things it was a great movie.

I liked the movie. So it differs from the book. Big deal. The only one I could see tonight was the 3D one. Not worth it. Screw 3D.

I’m surprised just how many people appear to be OK with that last final section. Did no one find the ridiculous use of a wheelbarrow in dragon combat just that one step beyond a reasonable suspension of belief? And what the hell was the damn thing supposed to be made of anyway, so it can float leisurely down in a stream of molten gold without melting, bursting into flame or do dwarf kings have backsides made of asbestos??
That last five minutes of horribly assembled CGI’d rubbish (including the worst looking giant Dwarf statue melting into a giant golden puddle moment ever ) just set my teeth on edge and pulled me totally out of the film. And that final cut!
It’s annoying just what has been distorted by changes to the story in that last part. Smaugs failure to smite the mountain has left the secret passage way open , obviously for a convenient future story point. No ponies, no food, so I guess the Dwarfs should starve unlesss…… oh yes.
In the story the KEY reason Thorin holes himself into the mountain is he doesn’t want to share the smallest part of his wealth. But here he can apparently melt enough gold to make a huge statue turn into a “lake” deep enough to drown a dragon. There’s just too much gold here to make that credible any more.
And the four other dwarfs in Laketown, including a romantic lead (that’s supposed to be fighting fit in the book) are presumably going to be involved in springing Bard from the jail. I imagine there is going to be a very tense and extended escape section there involving Tauriel ,but who will fire the Black Arrow, Bard is supposed to but I’d say Tauriel is arguably the better shot now. Unless…..
I can see WHY they have left Smaug V Laketown for the next because there is going to be a lot of waiting about for the Battle of the Five armies to commence once he is downed (excluding Gandalfs escape from Dol Guldur). But those last ten minutes really exasperated me because up until then I thought they’d done an exciting, clever and enhanced revision of the story.
