The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Post-release)

The elven palace guards do look similar - they were done by the same artist, Nick Keller.

Edit: I think the pic on the left is the one I saw:

You've never read the book, have you?

Every middle piece of a trilogy suffers from leaving hanging threads and seemingly under-developed plot lines. Look at Star Wars IV, V, VI. I think the Wingnut filmmakers know how to tell a story and all will be resolved in the final chapter.

I was reading a few weeks back about an "exclusive" DOS movie poster where is shows Smaug's whole body behind a column, and a small Bilbo infront of said column. (I'll google'fu to see if I can find it)

Does anyone know where this poster is available from? Checked fleaBay, wbshop.com and a few other places but can't seem to find it.

T.I.A. (thanks in advance)

I felt the Beorn visit was fairly rushed through and almost pointless. I would have liked either more Beorn or NO Beorn. He has little impact to the story other than to provide information, protection and ponies. Similar to the dropping of Tom Bombadil, those things could've been written around as well.

Totally agree - really hoping the extended version gives us enough Beorn to actually give the whole thing a point.

I felt like they were trying too hard to tie it into the LOTR series. So now, Kili, shot by some peon orc isn't just poisoned... no, it's a Morgul Shaft(tm) JUST LIKE FRODO GUYS!!! OMG HE GONNA DIE! But luckily, someone asked not just for Kingsfoil, but Athelas too, just in case you missed the Kingsfoil reference. JUST LIKE FRODO GUYS!!!

Don't get me started on the whole endless eye of Sauron tunnel. Y'know, just in case you didn't get the memo.

Some of the side stuff was pretty good, and added to the story, but some of the stuff made up whole cloth just felt like bad fanfiction. Tauriel and Kili? Really? Did we really need that? Orcs attacking Laketown? Seriously? Tauriel and Legolas running cover for the dwarves in the barrels? And what was up with Bilbo taking the ring off and showing himself to Smaug?

Yeah it seemed kind of pointless to have the whole Kili arrow scene considering
both he and fili are killed. Unless they just wanted that part to hit harder, or the cut it all together

I may be wrong, I haven't read up on my LoTR lore in awhile, but I found it strange that a common orc was carrying a "Morgul Arrow". Wasn't the Morgul Blade a one of a kind evil artifact owned solely by the Witch King? I thought that sort of power was wielded only by the Ringwraiths for the purpose of turning another soul into one of them. I may be wrong though.

Also I agree that Beorn was kind of pointless given what little they showed of him. Because I'm certain one thing they will change is
the fact that he kills Bolg. I bet that they will change it to Thorin killing Bolg
I also really enjoyed how Gandalf tricked him into letting all of the dwarves into his house, and was a little disappointed that it wasn't included in the movie. Although I think its understandable that it was cut.

Saw it today. OK film, I liked the first one better, but this was wasn't too bad. I saw many liberties in the film they took. It's been while since I read the book, was the part where the dwarves tried to pour the melted gold in the book? I don't think I remember it.

You mean the part where the dwarves enter the mountain at all? They never even saw Smaug in the book, Bilbo was the only one to have any face time with him.

Watch after the end credits please.

Is that just because the sequence is funny? Because if it's meant to be relevant to the discussion, I fail to see it. Don't get me wrong I thought the song was funny and the pop-up messages were amusing, but the dwarf killing orcs in the barrel wasn't in the book either.

OK, I want to preface this by saying that three of my five fave movies are very long (Seven Samurai, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and Apocalypse Now). So I'm not inherently opposed to long movies. But daaaaamn that was tedious. It was less awful than the first one, thank god, but it really could have been like 30 minutes shorter. I thought they were going to stop and have a picnic in Smaug's lair...it just went on and on.

The action was too over the top, as with the first (though in fairness a lot of it WAS fun), and the relentless need to set up Sauron's return rather than let this movie be an independent adventure weakens the film dramatically. A few hints at Sauron are fine, sure, but the need to make it all connect really is pointless and slams the brakes on the momentum of the main action.

I felt very emotionally involved with LOTR. I have no major criticisms of it. Getting through these Hobbit movies feels like a chore.

It's frustrating, because if PJ had simply made the Hobbit, it looks like he would have done a great job. But his need to bloat the crap out of everything (cynical cash grab? Lucas yes-men syndrome?) really is spoiling something that could have been a lot of fun. Now it's just a huge snooze.

I'll have to rematch FotR for that I suppose. In the source material Gandalf did know that the Necromancer was Sauron by the time "The Hobbit" takes place.
