The Hobbit - starts filming March 21

Hearing all these complaints about the look and (potential) feel of the films makes me glad I don't read books AT ALL. I mean, I love the LOTR movies, and I had no idea that Gandalf's sword glowed around orcs in the books. Having Sting glow really made the sword special IMO, and I think having all elvish blades react like that would make Frodo's sword seem less important (and awesome).
Really? You're glad you don't read books AT ALL?

Strike up another win for proud illiteracy.:confused

To me the books were like torture to read. Why did everything have seven names.

ranger, strider, aragorn, ilsidurs heir, king of gondor, duidine (sp?), neumanorian?
Are you actually this dense, or are you trolling?

Ranger: What he was, a Ranger of Gondor.
Strider: His nickname. You've heard of nicknames, right?
Aragorn (Son of Arathorn): His given name.
Isildur's heir: He was a decendent of the line of Isilidur. This isn't a name, just a statement of fact.
King of Gondor: What he was... the King of Gondor. Duh.
Dunedin: His race.

So only 1 name, 1 nickname, and a few DIFFERENT descriptors.

Dunedain, Numenorian, which aren't personal names. And you left out Estel, Elessar, Telcontar, Thorongil and the Elfstone, all of which are actual names by which he goes at various points. :p

Bringing back the talk over Gandalf's Staff being different, I agree that wear and tear might be the most reasonable idea.

Heck yeah. He potters around Middle Earth for the better part of two thousand years, a bit of driftwood isn't going to last more than a few years.

Martin Freeman, from the British version of Ricky Gervais’ The Office, has come onboard in the title role of Bilbo Baggins.

Wait, there's a British version of The Office? Why would they do that? Damn Limeys speak the same language don't they?!? :lol

See above. :p

No minis, no thanks...

:lol

Where did you get yours? I'd love a copy.

There's a couple made by forum members - jheilman makes a nice one that you cut and weather yourself, and Indy Magnoli makes a nice one that's pre-weathered, and slightly smaller. I have both; couldn't resist - can recommend both, they're great.

Can't wait, looks brilliant!, i've been rereading the hobbit, its a great tale, wonder how they'll split the movies?

This trailer was all kinds of cool. I've read the book and am still anxious to see this. Not so keen on it being split in two, but I can understand it.

Yup. I choose not to read novels. It doesn't mean I'm a moron. Intend to spend my time reading news articles from papers like the New York Times, mainly about health, science and space, not to mention articles in magazines like Smithsonian and National Geographic.

I suppose I'm a also failure of a man because I don't follow sports like football, basketball and baseball.

Weeeeell, the split is going to be interesting. It's a small book. Wasn't the buzz a couple of years back that they were going to film a bunch of side-story stuff? Early parts of the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, the attack on Dol Guldur, Aragorn and Gandalf's pursuit of Gollum, etc?

Heard some mention of Saruman the White and Radagast the Brown being included somehow but that could have been an old rumour long since dispelled.

I believe at one point one film would be just 'The Hobbit' and one would be all side-story stuff to bridge it to LotR. When Del Toro was still attached they realized that Hobbit was enough to fill two movies on its own. Any side-story stuff has to be taken from Hobbit and LotR since they don't have the movie rights to any of Tolkien's other work.

Saruman won't show until the second movie, as a connection between both stories. At this point in the timeline, Saruman was starting to think of the One Ring and it's whereabouts, due to the fact he had come in possession of a Palantir. Sauron, through Saruman's Palantir, started to intercept his thoughts and feelings, changing Saruman's side slowly but surely. Right before the LotR's timeline begins, Saruman's holds a gathering with the Istari to bring the Ring's whereabouts back up. He tells the council he believes the Ring has traveled out to sea and will never be returned. He secretly starts a search party and starts banding together orcs, to make Isengard a stronghold. His allegiances in the Hobbit timeline are beginning to slightly sway, though he is still a council member and advicer-giver to Gandalf and the rest of the Istari.

Now, Radagast lives out in the wild and frequently visits with Gandalf, as he is one wizard lower. He gives Gandalf valuable information about the goings-on in wild and conversations he has over heard whilst out and about. He may or may not show his head in the first movie, as they travel over the Misty Mountains, before they meet with Beorn.

All the side story stuff I mentioned is from LOTR. Appendices.

Nope, Lee is back as Saruman and Sylvester McCoy as Radagast.

He okays (reluctantly) Sauron being booted out of Dol Guldur in Mirkwood, too, and presumably participates in the attack. Will be great if we get much of that. I know PJ has talked about it, can't recall the details.
