The Hobbit - starts filming March 21

Hearing all these complaints about the look and (potential) feel of the films makes me glad I don't read books AT ALL. I mean, I love the LOTR movies, and I had no idea that Gandalf's sword glowed around orcs in the books. Having Sting glow really made the sword special IMO, and I think having all elvish blades react like that would make Frodo's sword seem less important (and awesome).
Not all elvish blades. Particular special ones of old.

Bringing back the talk over Gandalf's Staff being different, I agree that wear and tear might be the most reasonable idea. Also, it is mentioned in the hobbit that Gandalf inscribed the sign on the door to Bag End with a point/sharp thing (I can't remember exactly) on top of the staff. The design change might be to reflect this particular action in the film and if you compare the two Staffs - The first one in FotR with the new one for the Hobbit, they are roughly the same size and it is possible that it has simply broken away in places over the years between when seen in FotR.

If both Glamdring and Sting were to glow many times, I believe they would be too reminiscent of Lightsabers and would look cheesy. If they made a replica of this new staff, like the rare Noble Collection one - I would be screaming to get one immediately! :behave

I'm going to a special screening of Secret of the Unicorn in Welly where I'll get to see this trailer on the big screen.

I.

Can't.

Wait.

...for Tintin, that is!

The link is up or down. A lot of people are getting 404, I think, so if Dave's link doesn't work for anyone, TORN confirmed it's correct, so keep trying.
